Before everyone jumps off the bridge relax

a very young defence in a loud dome could not communicate well. Its a learning experience.

espeically for mayo and merriweather. they will turn it around. you cannot teach experience.

The only way to avoid these kind of mistakes is by getting experience. And the only way to get experience is to have to go through these kind of situations.

They will turn it around. Maybe not this year. But soon.

The dome is quiet when the Saints offense is on the field.

Mayo has a strange habit of bouncing arm tackles off of RB's. The whole night the Pats defense got worse and worse at tackling. Highlighted by Burgess whiffing entirely on the Pierre Thomas screen TD pass, the Pat's open field tackling was flat out terrible last night.

Mayo=one of the most overrated players in the league right now.

Agree completely. The only times Mayo did anything was when he was making tackles 6-7 yards down the field. He was unblocked multiple times in the hole against the running back and whiffed. Vilma is/was a much better player (at least last night).

Overrated, should have drafted DRC

Speaking of overrated...

That said, I don't think we should be so down on Wilhite. I think Butler will end up being the better player, but let's not forget that people were vociferously critical of a certain other Patriots 4th round cornerback who, if I recall, ended up being pretty good.

FWIW, I don't think Mayo is fully recovered from his injury, which may explain his somewhat lackluster play.

We've seen worse Patriot teams come back from abysmal December showings and play well (2006). We've seen horrific showings by other teams in December take the Super Bowl champ to the wire (Arizona).

The Pats D is a problem, but anyone writing them off so quickly is mistaken.

They are going to the playoffs with potentially the 2nd bye and at least one road game.

Do not bet against Belichick and Brady in the playoffs no matter how bad their defense is.

our secondary is what it is they don't make plays on the ball there all designed to give 10 yards of cushion to keep the guy in front of them to make the tackle that is it, we have no playmakers back there NONE. I do like our safeties but they are just hitters we need a corner that can make a play on the ball, everytime the ball gets in the air even against bad teams we just have to hope the qb didn't throw a good ball rarely do we see our corners knocking down passes or getting picks. Leigh Boddens' picks don't count Sanchez put them right in his chest. We haven't been the same since ty law or asante without a corner like them we aren't going very far.

I agree but I am going to add that the lack of offense in the 2nd half this season is a concern.

DRC has made way more impact plays than Mayo, and is left alone on an island against the opponents top WR. It is hindsight, but DRC is a waaaaaay better player than Mayo to THIS POINT of their career. Anyone that would take Mayo over DRC is not being objective.

I don't begrudge the Patriots their choice. They chose a slightly lower ceiling but what they saw as a significantly higher floor (a LB proven in the SEC v. a cornerback from a I-AA school).

Doesn't mean I would have drafted DRC over Mayo.

Maybe it was all the food he ate on Thanksgiving that slowed him down. The guy looks like he weighs 260 on that shot from behind on one of the big scoring plays. I can't believe how big he looked.

Every one is saying he made a step backwards....

could this be because of the early knee injury he sustained? Knee injuries suck and ppl handle them differently. It could be a mind game now...

Last year, everyone loved Mayo. He was DROY and everyone was claiming what a steal we got with the 10th pick. This year he gets injured, comes back from injury and isn't as sharp as he was pre-injury, so let's proclaim him a bust. Man, we Patriot fans are a fickle bunch.

Hmmm, lets see.

Which one was the DROY? Oh yeah, I remember, Mayo.

Then Mayo got hurt early in the first game this year. I agree, DRC made a lot more plays than Mayo when Mayo was injured.

Mayo came back way sooner than people expected - maybe too soon. Still managed to force a fumble in his first game back. He hasn't been quite the same as last year, but I would think recovering from a knee injury might have that effect.

JMSO (the "S" stands for "subjective").

I hope some people re-read their comments further down the track and look upon themselves with the scorn they deserve.

Lately, Mayo and Meriweather have been quiet, so that means they are overrated already? Give me a break please.

The panic levels in this forum post loss get rather embarrassing.

Mayo was not the reason the defense looked like crap on sunday. The run defense looked shaky at times but he still made plenty of tackles, several near the LOS. it's not like he took snaps at CB or Safety

I agree here, though the offensive woes in the 2nd half and the inability to win on the road frightens me. We have had leads in the 4th quarters in 3 of our losses vs. Denver, vs. Jets and 17 points at Indy, and all let them get away.
The defense as of right now is not suited to go in and beat a Indy or San Diego for that matter with Phillip Rivers. Maybe this turns around, but based on what I have seen us vs. good team on the road, im not too optimistic right now.
