Thought I'd do some research into how the Pats under Brady & Belichick have fared vs. teams and defenses coached by Gregg Williams, one of the more respected defensive coaches in the NFL and current D-coordinator of the Saints.

2001: Pats 21 Bills 11, 205 yards total offense
2001: Pats 12 Bills 9, 335 yards total offense
2002: Pats 38 Bills 7, 422 yards total offense
2002: Pats 27 Bills 17, 275 yards total offense
2003: Bills 31 Pats 0, 239 yards total offense
2003: Pats 31 Bills 0, 321 yards total offense
2007: Pats 52 Redskins 7, 486 yards total offense

The 2001 through 2003 games came when Williams was the head coach of Buffalo. The 2007 game vs. Washington was while Williams was Redskins D-coordinator.

Silly comparison. Gregg Williams has never had the luxury of an offense the likes of what New Orleans has now. They jump on top of you by 10-14 points and then his defense goes to work. He also has better personel on the defensive side as well, as long as they're healthy.

Folks are looking at the recent problems the Saints have had and are saying it's weakness.....it's boloney. As Pats fans should know, when you are undefeated you get every teams BEST shot every week. Every team wants to be the first to hang that loss on you. The Saints learned in the Rams game that they cannot take anyone for granted. The Bucs found out exactly how well they figured it out this week.

Sedrick Ellis, Reggie Bush and Jabari Greer will all be back this week along with an activated Chris McAlister and newly signed Mike McKenzie....unfortunately for the Pats the injury woes are clearing up for the Black n' Gold.

Chris McAlister, seriously? I personally along with the Pats receivers would love to see him out there playing, or at least trying to.

Maybe they should just cancel the game....it seems a given that the "Black n' Gold" will win this one.

Previous to dismantling the super power that is the Bucs, the Saints played four very close games where they could have lost any of them.

We do acknowledge that the Saints will be the toughest game for Pats this season but you must acknowledge the Pats are easily the toughest opponent the Saints have played all season.

what system does he play? What philosophy does he use?

It's very aggressive and blitz-heavy, with an emphasis on results. For example, DBs get a certain number of points within the system for disruptive plays when they go over film in meetings.As for actual scheme, I'm not entirely sure. All I know is what Bowen posts over at the NFP.

Encouraging numbers, by the way. I think we'll roll up points on their D, and I'm hoping that our own defense can stay disciplined and intense for the full course of the game. Should be quite a showdown.

The Redskins defense is quite respectable, curently ranking 6th in the NFL in PPG, 4th in YPG, and 1st in passing YPG. 7 of the 11 current starters started on the 2007 team that the Pats drubbed 52-7 (LDE Phillip Daniels, RDE Andre Carter, LDT Cornelius Griffin, WLB Roger McIntosh, MLB London Fletcher, CB Carlos Rogers and SS LaRon Landry). The main changes are Albert Haynesworth over Kedric Golston at RDT (a big upgrade) Brian Orapko at SLB over Marcus Washington (a wash, as Washington played quite well in 2007), DeAngelo Hall over Shawn Springs at CB (probably a wash), and Reed Dought replacing the late Sean Taylor (a huge dropoff). That defense finished 8th in the NFL in YPG and 11th in PPG (despite the 52-7 blowout). So it wasn't exactly toast, even though the Pats toasted it.

I'd say it's very arguable that Williams has better defensive personnel now than he had with the 2007 Redskins. But I agree that it makes a big difference when you're up by 2 TDs or more.
