Would you want Charlie Weis back as OC?

It seems these days the only other football topic anyone's talking about besides "the call" is whether or not Charlie Weis is going to be fired at Notre Dame. Were this to happen, it begs the question - should the Pats look at bringing him back as offensive coordinator?

I don't see how it could hurt. There was criticism of the guy when he was still in NE, but you gotta admit, the team was more successful with him than without. Not to say, of course, he was the only reason.

This is purely speculative. Who's to say what will happen? But I figure it's something to talk about besides you-know-what.

I would think Charle would bring more of a running game to the O instead of pass happy O it has been since he left. Wow we could see both Romeo and Charle back on the side lines like old times.

it's not O'Brien that 's the problem. we are running a completely different offense because of welker and moss and we don't have a workhorse running back who can eat up yards. Charlie would come in here and run the same thing we are running now.

It has its Pros & Cons.
Pros being he knows Brady & some of Pats O players.
He knows BB & what he wants to to do being battle tested with 3SBs.

Wonder if a con can be how it was left off with BB after he left for ND HC job.

Oh yes, the man was crazy with his play calling, the kids don't get him or can't execute, at least we know Brady can throw, imagine if Weis had Moss and Welker back then.

O'Brien has looked bad because of a lack of execution. However, his play calling is getting really repetitive. If Brady likes Weiss as much as he claims, he will lobby BB hard to get Charlie back on the sidelines.

Do you guys remember in the 2004 playoff game against the colts how Dillon just tore through the colts D on an 8 minute drive to ice the game? We don't have that anymore. I really wish Fred Taylor would get back soon. I feel once we have him we can be more balanced. Taylor does well against the colts.

like they did with dom capers

but they are the #2 Offense in the NFL they are not realy the problem

they are one punt away from beating the best team in the NFL in there house

We did that because we didn't have Moss and Welker then. Sadly, Dillon was one and done. That is why they went after Maroney in 2006. When that didn't prove to be enough and Bill was able to land Welker and then Moss, all bets were off. The running game was to become complimentary only. The OL emphasis was shifted to pass blocking because Brady was too valuable to lose and the weapons at his disposal dictated we were a pass first offense.

Coordinators are limited by scheme and personnel. HC's make those decisions particularly here. We didn't win in 2002 with RAC and Charlie and we weren't going to with that dog tired back to back team in 2005 had they remained. I doubt we would have in 2006, either, because the personnel we had surrounding Brady were largely street FA's and the defense was a shell of its former self for lots of reasons. We were fine in 2007 for 18 games with the coordinators on hand. Unless Charlie and RAC could either pass block or rush the passer they weren't going to do a damn thing to impact what happened on the field during that 19th game.

The defense that stymied the Rams in 2001 was the brainchild of Bill and Ernie. RAC's job was to install it. The adjusted call that resulted in a TD to Patten just before the half was made by BB. The game winning drive was no huddle and Charlie's role was to relay Bill's instruction to Brady to go for it, but be careful with the ball. That drive was necessary because after being effectively shut down for most of three quarters, the Rams scored 14 unanswered points in consecutive drives in the 4th quarter...against a bunch of veteran playmakers who didn't always make the stop. XXXVIII was a no one can score snooze fest for most of the first half until a gd gunfight broke out. We won on a last second fieldgoal...again. Might have been the case again in XXXIX if not for Reid and McNabb being thoroughly inept whenever the chips are down.

Some interesting discussion. As was pointed out, the roster has changed significantly since Charlie was here, so it's hard to say if bringing him back would be all that helpful.

And like I said before, who knows? It seems like every year there's talk he'll be canned from Notre Dame, just like every year there's talk that Pete Carroll will leave USC to take another NFL job (not if he has any brains IMHO.)

Charlie's not coming back. Let's stop these endless threads. Even if he is fired from ND, he probably will not want to come back. Weis will want another shot at head coach and going back to Brady and Belichick probably won't help his reputation because it will enforce the notion he is a product of Brady and Belichick. He is more likely to be an OC of another team and prove he is worth away from Brady and Belichick. That would be his faster rebound to the head coaching ranks.

Romeo is more likely to come back since his head coaching days are probably behind him because of his age. But I wouldn't hold my breath there either.

I don't know if Weis could co-exist with Brady and the offese the Pats had. Brady has far more imput in the offense now and loves the shotgun although Brady has said that Weis refused to let him throw out of the shotgun other than very sparingly. Brady feels it gives him more time to survey the defense and make better reads and it is hard to argue against that. Could Charlie change his ways and call an offense that relies heavily on the shotgun and has a lot of similiarities to the Urban Meyer offense minus the option (which has been replaced with the RB draw)? Would Brady be happy lining up primarily under center? That is the biggest issue I see with Brady and Weis co-existing today.

I still think you can't go back. Weis was not all that popular in this town circa 2002 and 2003 anyway. It was 2004 that made him a legend. I don't see him returning other than maybe in a consultant role while he waits to get another job.
