this is a good move for them. fire Jauron now and get a head start on courting the best candidate out there. you know the skins and browns will be after Shanahan as soon as the last game of the season ends.

I heard on Mike & Mike that the Bears are considering firing Lovie Smith (because someone's got to take the fall for the Cutler debacle) and going after Shanahan, who is apparently from Chicago.

I don't think Shanahan wants to work for an owner/franchise that is relatively tight with the purse strings, both in terms of what it will take him to go back to coaching, as well as the freedom to go after whatever players he wants to sign. If Ralph Wilson is going to play games with the cap and contracts, it's more likely that he goes beneath the salary floor than over the salary cap.

If it goes through Buffalo will probably be turned around because I think shanny is a great coach. That said, I don't think it's an attractive location like other have pointed out. You compete with Belichick, and the worst part is you do so with an owner who has never been willing to spend the money to win.

I don't think any coach wants that right now. In the right organization, shannahan can turn it around I bet. I just don't think a guy like him will work well under a tight wallet owner. You need to take risks to win in this league. There's a big reason why Buffalo has been mediocre for so long.

FWIW. Buffalo local sports station WGR reported Ralph Wilson offered Shanahan a 5 year, $50M deal that includes partial ownership.

Not only is he a great coach, but he has also given BB fits over the years. He is the one coach that can give BB a hard time.

Shanahan is scheduled to make something ridiculous like $7 million next season to sit at home by the Broncos. The Bills will need to offer him something like $10 million for next season to even make it remotely attractive to go there. Anything less than a $7 million in 2010 offer and Shanahan will be coaching basically for free. I don't see the Bills coming up with that much scratch.

Based on what the Broncos still owe Shanahan, that isn't as good of a deal as it seems. It is more than I expected them to come up with, but it is my understanding that in 2010 and 2011 the Broncos still owed Shanahan about $14 million. If Shanahan signs somewhere else, the Broncos are off the hook. That means that Shanahan will only get about $36 million in new money over 5 years. That is still like $7 million a year and nothing to sneeze at.
