NFL.com Blogs Blog Archive Johnson clears waivers, becomes a free agent

Larry Johnson, who was released Monday by the Kansas City Chiefs, has cleared waivers and is now a free agent, according to a league source.

Johnson is owed the roughly $2.3 million remaining on his contract by the Chiefs.

A league source tells me the Houston Texans could end up being his most likely landing spot. That’s the team I’d focus on as a possible destination. It makes sense for Johnson as well, with the chance to be on a winning team.

Besides the Texans, league sources say the Bears, Patriots and Redskins have also called to express interest.

If the Pats sign Johnson that probably means they expect Taylor to go to IR

Because he cleared waivers, I can see the Pats taking a chance on him if he's willing to come to New England. However, one slip up and the Pats won't hesitate to kick his a** out the door.

Yeah, they are also interested in Michael Vick and Pacman Jones.

Don't laugh, this guy was the best runningback two years ago. KC is ABSOLUTELY pathetic. Why not give him a shot and suprise the Colts with a new player?

Good I wanted LJ in the offseason, at the deadline, and I still want him now. I really hope we sign him because even if Taylor/Morris don't return, LJ and Maroney with Faulk is extremely solid for the cold weather and playoffs. LJ will not disappoint.

EDIT: With Houston out of the mix, it is a 3 team race.

Bears, Patriots and Redskins

It is either Patriots or bust I'd say for LJ. He's dumb going to the Redskins because they are horrible, and the Bears playoff chances are fading. He would see the most playing time in NE also.

highly doubtful. Bb just keeping everyone guessing during game week.

Pass. A woman beating, racist, homophobe who's best years are behind him and even when he was good it was in part because he was running behind one of the best o-lines in league history.

Based on LJ's racist comments in the past, the Bears have the best shot. He couldn't stand a guy like Vermeil telling him how to conduct himself off the field because he is white, how is he going to deal with a white Belichick who will put more limitations on him on how he can conduct himself?

I believe Washingtons HC came out and said the Skins arent going to pick up LJ. So if your correct that leaves the Pats and Bears. Doubt he winds up here though.

the best running back? What in the world makes you think that? He had a ton of carries (since Herm Edwards is an idiot) but that was about it. He was good, sure, but to call him the best is just absurd.

LOL. You can't deny he's a good RB. Come on. and what you said about his character is very media based driven. Do you remember that Moss hit a cop with his car in Min? Should we throw him off the team now that you do?

We could use a "between the tackles" RB with Taylor still out..

Johnson did average 4.5 YPC just last year. I'd be tempted depending on the status of Fred.

That would be a double whammy.

First bad news: Taylor on IR

Second bad news: LJ battles Reggie Dupard for the rights to the nickname "One Yard"

One, he is no longer a good RB. He is a terrible running back. I'd rather re-sign Robbie Abdullah or Mike Cloud.

Two, it's not all media driven. He's been through the courts.

I'd rather the Colts sign him and suprise us by using him next week. That would be to our advantage.

Why can't he deny it? Johnson is averaging 2.7 ypc this season, and he can't block worth a damn. You can argue that this year is an aberration, but to flat out say that someone can't deny that he's a good running back given that average and his inability/refusal to block is a bit much, IMO.
