First - he is a physical specimen who according to Belicheck coul dstill add thirty pounds on his 6"8" frame.

Second - he is a rookie and playing Left Tackle in a complex offense so he has the grey matter

Third - give us flexibility on the line when Light does come back

Fourth - what a draft value in the second round

Fifth- I hope his stellar play does not mean the end of Mankins because these two could be our future O-Line stars for a while.

Oh Yea he also shut up Joey Porter

Very impressed with him, as much as I really like Light, Vollmer may be stepping into his shoes.. the Freeney matchup will be interesting, did not see much of Jason Taylor yesterday..

Vollmer is looking like a terrific pick, all the more so when you factor in how little football experience he had coming in. Absolute prototype size and athleticism, very smart, and still learning = incredible long-term potential.

But...why would the success of a rookie tackle in any way signal the end of the Pats' Pro-Bowl guard?

He missed a few blitzes yesterday, so the grey matter's not completely there yet.

Does anyone feel that Nick Kaczur would be a good future fit at RG?

Kaczur has improved considerably at RT, but there is still some room for growth at the position. There are 2 potentially really good RTs coming out in the 2010 draft in Iowa RT Kyle Calloway (6'7" 315#) and Wisconsin junior OT Gabe Carmini (6'8" 320# mauler). Both would make very nice complements to Vollmer as bookend tackles. With a lot of good tackles likely coming out in this draft (Russell Okung, Trent Williams, Brian Bulaga (junior, Bruce Campbel (junior)l, Charles Brown, Jason Fox, Ciron Black, Selvish Capers, Adam Ulatowski and Jeff Linkenbach) I could see a pure RT falling to the late 2nd/3rd round.

If Kaczur could play RG, a 2011 line of Vollmer-Mankins-Koppen-Kaczur-Carimi/Calloway sounds fairly attractive right now.

Ich glaube Herr Vollmer ist ein gross LT und er ist sehr gute! Yah!

The last time the Pats drafted a highly-rated college RT was Ryan O'Callaghan. Didn't go so well.

I'd be surprised (not that I haven't been surprised before). I think if Belichick thinks he has a good value at RT he'd prefer to keep it that way rather than move him to a lesser position and have a decent value. I expect Mankins to leave if he wants top dollar and for Vollmer and Kaczer to be the Tackles for a number of years.

Please use smilies so that we know you are joking.

go back to the discussions (Draft discussions).......

he is my boy.... he was my favorite pick

NO WAY does Matt Light take over @ LT if LIGHT comes back vs. INDY

Don't put too much stock in that. As I was saying the week heading up to this game, Taylor sucks now... badly. The vast majority of the sacks that he has had came in two games. Same thing with Porter.

This weekend is going to be the moment of truth for Vollmer. From what I saw, he is an athletic freak for his size at the LT position, but still does have room to improve. If he can keep Freeney from sacking Brady this week, then he's well on his way and should see some snaps even when Light does come back.

I liked using LeVoir as an extra blocking TE to help out Vollmer. I could see using that a lot next week against Freeney.

We'd better see that. If we don't, we'll see a lot of Freeney killing Tom Brady. People here are going way overboard on Vollmer. There's a reason that he's been getting a lot of help, after all.

Vollmer's done very well given his situation, but I'm not ready to put him 1 on 1 with Freeney yet ... not by any means.

Well put. I'd like to have Light back for this game.

Same here. As it was pointed out in my Matt Light thread about a month back, he owns Freeney.

Hypothetical situation-

say Vollmer handles Freeney and makes him a "non factor"

and he continues this trend the rest of the season......

A. Can he win ROY?
B. Will he make the Pro-Bowl?

(All Hypothetical......)

The man is HUGE and strong as an Ox, I like him alot. Imo think he his going to be a Pro-Bowler in a few years, given our age at OL we need some new blood in there to mix things up.

I really like Vollmer but he will need help against Freeney who is one of the best DEs in the NFL this season.

Freeney could have 5 sacks in this game if Seabass has no help.
