I also don't think many would want to re-sign him next year, if he asked for starter-type money.
Number one pics are suppose to contribute and have an immediate positive impact. So instead of calling Maroney a BUST...... b/c he does not deserve to be in the category of jamarcus russel.
Maroney is in fact a "disappointment" pick when measured up against past ones of 2001-Present.
2001 6 Richard Seymour DT Georgia
2002 21 Daniel Graham TE Colorado [29]
2003 13 Ty Warren DT Texas A&M [30]
2004 21 Vince Wilfork DT Miami (FL) [31]
32 Benjamin Watson TE Georgia
2005 32 Logan Mankins OG Fresno State
2006 21 Laurence Maroney RB Minnesota
2007 24 Brandon Meriweather S Miami (FL) [32]
2008 10 Jerod Mayo LB Tennessee [33]
I never blame the player for the position they are drafted in.Maroney is a decent back, just isn't a 1st rounder in retrospect.

agreed....
I see the Maroney lovers have given this thread a 1 Star rating

I'm undecided on LoMo. I see the potential, but I also watch Adrian Peterson week in week out making plays (and the stupid Vikings threw the ball 51 times on the weekend.. 51 times).
We should play him in the spread offense out wide. He's far better in open space IMO.
Personally, not on big money no. That said, I don't believe we have one established starter but a collection of runners who are capable of doing the job collectively.Even not knowing his draft position... when his contract is up after this year, are you willing to pay him starter money to re-sign?

look how well we have hit on FIRST ROUNDERS.
Watson/Merriwheather are coming around........ Everybody except Maroney is a standout/impact player.
Watson is healthy for a change and we can finally see him at work.
those who've written Maroney off or say he's a "bust" just don't know what they're talking about and I ignore them...
but, as I've said many, many times out here, there's no doubt that a lot of us have been disappointed in him given the hype around his first round pick...but that doesn't mean he isn't a valuable contributor in his own right... it just means that we have to be grown ups, adapt our expectations and accept him for the solid player he is, who, as BB noted today, would benefit from better blocking...
BradyFTW! perhaps I should have expanded my thoughts. I wasn't directly comparing Peterson with Maroney as that's a no brainer. My thoughts were more along the lines of time in the league and impact. This now becomes a discussion about scheme and player use.I dunno if comparing him to AP is totally fair- every other RB in the NFL today will come up way short in that comparison. ANd remember, the difference between a top-10 pick and a twenty-something pick is significant, both in terms of the average level of talent and the paycheck. I just don't think that they're directly comparable.
That said, the downside of how Cihldress is using Peterson is that he's going to be a broken-down JAG within 3-4 years. Not saying it's not worth it, but it's definitely something to consider.
If you had been here last year, you would have watched as people bashed Watson and Meriweather in the exact same way that you're going after Maroney. In fact, if anything, Watson should be an object lesson in why it's stupid to perform this kind of analysis.
Watson is much like Maroney- asked for years to fulfill a specific role in the Pats' offense, and he fills it as a starter, but because Pats fans are convinced that every first rounder MUST become an all-pro, he's a bust, even though his role in the offense precludes him from being an all-pro in the first place.
So for everyone who's derisively calling me a Maroney-lover now, just remember that last year the same people were giving me crap for maintaining that Watson was just fine as a TE. I also maintained that it was okay for Meriweather to not be starting yet, because there's no law saying that second-year guys have to start, and it doesn't mean he's behind-schedule. I wasn't as near-universally ridiculed for that opinion, though. Likewise, in '07 and '08, I was getting slammed for claiming that Kaczur did not, in fact, suck.
In particular, it's funny how quickly people have reversed course on Watson, and after years of absolutely killing him, suddenly everyone's pretending that they never doubted him. Maybe the same will happen when Maroney strings together a few good games once the bad weather rolls around and we spend a little less time in the shotgun spread...

I don't necessarily agree with your regarding Peterson as Oklahoma used him pretty extensively, plus he has a fantastic run blocking o-line in front of him.

Where Maroney excells and what he is best and lethal at is catching 2-5 yard out pass patterns where he could get into space and use his speed - Maroney does not like contact so why not use him more in this fashion to where he can provide some asset to the team?.
Where do you come up with he doesnt like contact? I know that moron Felger has said that but have you ever watrched LM, I see no indication he doesnt like contact, unless you were having beers with him one night ans he told you that personally, then in that case I apologize
How long has it taken for Watson to come around? This is his 6th season. Yet, you are sitting there judging Maroney on a little more than 2. Talk about not judging players equally. Maroney is an impact player. He's good, not great. But people like yourself have ridiculous expectations and look at things only in a vacuum. So, talking with you about it is next to pointless.
