The kid is the 3rd best safety in football right now, we know who 1 and 2 are, but Brandon is knocking on their door.

Are you serious? The kid is showing real signs of coming into his own, and is going to be a force in the Pats secondary for years to come, but he's not even the third best safety in the AFC, let alone the entire NFL.

What ? Tell me who is playing better than Brandon right now aside from the 2 obvious ones.

Of the two obvious ones, I don't think either one actually is playing better than him right now.

Exactly, one has been out for weeks and to be honest, I really haven't heard much from Ed Reed. I take nothing away from how great they are, but you are right, you'de have to put BM ahead of them as of right now.

I hope you're including Darren Sharper in your "obvious top two," but i somehow get the feeling that you're not.

That wasn't the original premise of the comment. The original premise was "Meriweather is the third best safety in the NFL".

I agree, Meriweather is outplaying a lot of safeties right now, in fact he's outplaying safeties who are flat out better than him right now.

At risk of sounding like the "guy who just hates Meriweather on Patsfans.com", which I don't, I'll say this: End of game situation where we need a big stop to win, I'll take Polamalu, Reed, and Sharper starting over Meriweather, and assuming full health, I might even take Bob Sanders.

Don't get me wrong, I think the kid will turn out to be one hell of a safety, but would we be anointing him as the third best safety, and "knocking on the door" of dominance? I really don't think so. Lets knock off the reactionary crap and save these kinds of discussions for the end of the regular season, we'll need something to talk about during the Bye.

Meriweather has been playing some inspired football and has clearly elevated his play this year. However, lets see him improve his tackling and stay at a consistent level for a couple of years before we start throwing around "one of the best in the league".
I like what I see. I just want to see more of it and for longer.

.

And I wouldnt. Is that fair?

Sanders is great against the run, but overcommits, and isn't good against the pass. Polamalu is a gambler, and in the situation at the end of the game where an incomplete is just as good as an INT, I want the guy who is better in coverage, and Meriweather is better in coverage than Polamalu. Reed is playing like crap right now.

I don't know enough about Sharper other than that hes got a bunch of INTs for TDs this year and has been playing forever, so mulligan on that one.

Perfectly fair. Agree to disagree, and we're probably both wrong. If we were right, we'd have coaching jobs.

Don't really need to add much to that. That's the way I feel as well. Just to add, I've always liked the way Brandon has played since his college days. The Patriots were lucky he dropped and picked him up when they did.

Just a fun post on a boring Halloween night

saw this in Sports Iluustarted. I'm sure some of you have seen this but here goes for those who have not.

They have a section that is called The Pop Culture Grid where they ask athletes random questions and this week they asked Brandon Merriweather those questions......

My advice to the Balloon Family.....Stay creative
Favorite Halloween candy.....Red Hots or Lemonheads
Movie that scares me senseless.....Friday the 13th
Our locker room smells like.....Paradise(loved that one)
Best Halloween costume I've ever had.....Superman

Hopefully BM will be getting more game balls in the future. I'm looking forward to it.

Another few i'd include ahead of Meriweather (and i'm his biggest fan)

Dawkins is one.

Maybe not near the elite for now, but in a group with Rolle, Atogwe, Rhodes, Griffin and a few more.

But, he is close to making himself a top 5 safety.

If the Pro Bowl had 2 safeties in each position, he'd be in there for me, but I think Dawkins will pip him and Polamalu will get the douchebag vote as well. But top 3/4 Strong Safety in the game.

Patriots Daily rocks. Great stuff, Chris. As for Meriweather...

I agree with the "I'm excited, he's looking great, but let's calm down a bit" crowd.
