NFL.com Blogs Blog Archive Cowboys set to announce new deal for Ware

The Cowboys have called a news conference for 5:30 p.m. ET on Monday at which the team will announce a new contract extension for LB DeMarcus Ware, NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi reports

I'm happy for DeMarcus Ware I think he has played very well and should be compensated for his play. I'm looking forward to the Patriots taking care of our defensive stalwart. I'll be very happy that day the man comes to work and does his job very well. We really appreciate you BIG Vince.

Cowboys agreed to terms with OLB DeMarcus Ware on a new six-year contract that includes $40 million guaranteed.

I'm hearing $80M total (counting incentives), with 40M guaranteed. IE, its really a bigger deal than Haynsworth got.

You'd figure it would be a lesser deal given his numbers this year. Lucky they got it done though.

 That is huge ! I know its a different position, but that definitely raises the bar for a premium skill positional player

Seriously? Jerry Jones is nuts. They'll be regretting this deal in two years.

No doubt he's nuts. They overpaid in the trade for Roy Williams who is one of the most overrated players in the league while their best receiver is an undrafted shlub making the minimum.

He is nuts, but this is a good move. He is one of the top outside LBs in the NFL right now and anchors their defense. He just needs to get an actual coach in there instead of a figurehead.

Pretty sure that teams can't sign players to extensions because of economic uncertainity, look it up. Mr. Kraft does not lie.

I think Ware's the best defender in football, but committing that much money to any one player can cripple a team. I wouldn't have made this deal, I'd have 1) looked for a smaller number, or 2) franchised him for at least a year. I don't think Belichick signs him at this number, and we know Belichick likes him and had him rated as the top player in that draft.

Eventhough Ware is having a slow start to the year, he is generally recognized as one of the two or three best defenders in the league (if not the best). Not surprising on his contract especially after what Haynesworth got.

I think Jerry Jones is betting on there being a much different situation in terms of the CBA and profit-sharing with smaller market teams in 2011. If he's right then it could be a good move, but if not...very bad. I just hope the Pats can somehow lock up Vince Wilfork. I for one, would be very bummed to see him go.

Yes because keeping the nfls best defensive player= a bad thing

lol, just lol

While I mostly agree, plenty of teams commit more money to single players. For example, with the inflation in the cap the last couple years, the 9M/yr Seymour got is probably a higher percentage of the cap. The cap was 94.5M when Seymour's contract was negotiated (9/94.5=9.5%, vs 13M/129 = 10.0%), so, besides the years, Ware's contract isn't really much more than Seymours. The years are of course important.

All of this shouldn't be surprising though, as there are significantly more 3-4 teams right now than when Seymour resigned, and Ware would probably play better as a traditional 4-3 DE than Seymour, which also ups his value.

I mean, this is nowhere near as bad as Nnamdi A's contract(15m PER), or a high first round QB's contract.

It will be interesting to see how Seymour tries to play this in his negotiations.

The thing is that they've also got 60 million wrapped up in Romo and 45 million wrapped up in Williams (what a stupid contract). Add it up and you've got lots of budget players filling out the rest of the roster. That doesn't add up to championships.

Of the three, though, Ware is the most valuable.

Right, but thats pretty much the status quo in the NFL. Romo makes $11M. Williams makes $9M a year. Ware makes $13M a year.

As opposed to Moss, Brady, and Seymour (going into this year) Making 9.5, 15, and 9.5. Most teams are heavy at the top like this.
