A Better Way to Decide Overtime in the N.F.L. - The Fifth Down Blog - NYTimes.com

Silent Auction
Each coach writes down a yard-line at which they would elect to start their offense. The numbers are given to the referee in sealed envelopes; whichever coach picked the lower yard-line wins the auction and get the ball first. The game plays out in sudden death.
So what happens if they both pick the same number, or they both pick 1, then 2, then 3, and so on?

OT Needs fixing, but IMHO this is a stupid solution.

For me it's just first to 7 points. That would make OT more exciting in my opinion. I hate seeing OT being decided by a field goal.

Let's not make it a game show. How bout, let the other team have the ball if the team that gets the ball first scores. After that, tough luck. That way if the 1st team gets a fg. The 2nd team can win it with a td. If the first team gets a td, they can always go for 2.
If not, kick again and stop them.

Let's amke a deal...It's football..need something that is more about the game that gives each team a shot...two 5 min periods..only 1 TO...so ecah has a chance to win...if it's tied after that THAT is the way it is..

I like the idea of first to 6 points wins. 1 TD or 2 FGs.

Patjew... you need to be on the competition committee and write all the rules.

I like this suggestion.... a lot.

You choose to kick, or start at your own ten.

I like the idea, but it doesn't help those hopeless, "nobody want it" games.

So let it be written...

Really; Get rid of ot and let it end in a tie. If neither team can win it in 60 minutes, so be it. It will all sort out at the end of the season, when that tie may keep a team out of the playoffs. That should be enough incentive to go for the win, instead of take a knee to get to ot.

Agree. The first to six or seven points idea still puts the kicking team at a disadvantage. Each team should have the ball at least once.

Perfect. Much as I love game theory cleverness (Mr. Patchick and I once held a silent auction to determine how many loads of laundry we'd be willing to do to get out of a particularly loathsome chore), your approach is clean and simple.

Edit: though I've always thought that a super-easy improvement would be just taking away the opening kickoff. Offset the first-possession advantage by making the coinflip winner start at their own 5 or 10.

Maybe 2 criteria, either first to 6 or whoever is leading after the end of the OT quarter.

This is like 'silver goal' in 'soccer'

Extra time is two 15minutes in 'soccer', and if a team scores in the first 15minutes and is leading after the 15, they win.

But if the other team score aswell in the first 15, they play the second 15.

So that would work. If team A scores a TD in OT, team B must equal that in OT and stop team A from scoring again for a draw, or score more for the win.

I still prefer sudden death in OT.

But instead of the coin flip, the team that wins the TOP in the game, gets to receive kickoff.

Either of these would be fine with me. The NYT proposal is silly, and would definitely make it more of a gameshow. That'd be as ridiculous as having two guys chase a football to determine the kick-off...oh...

On the flip side one could argue the team that's had the ball for *less* time deserves it first.

Great idea by the NYT, but I don't think it goes far enough. They should hire a professional auctioneer and the head coaches should sit down with those little paddles.
