So a guy throws a punch and is ejected from the game and gets fined $5000 but BM gets an iffy call for taunting and gets fined $7500?

Ryan is such a hypocrite.

Sorry but if the head coach can't conduct himself in a professional manner he has no right to punish his players for following suit.

Not sure why #44 was ejected and then fined, no less, when it looked like it was the bigger guy that actually threw (and landed) the punch.

Actually the Jets' player was a team imposed fine and suspension. And assuming the suspension comes with a loss of a game check (most suspensions do), it is a much higher fine than Meriweather got. Say the player is getting the league minimum of $00k or so, his game check is about $25k.

It's the Jets and it's Goodell...you do the math

I give Ryan credit on this, just because he talks brashly (ok, he's an ass) doesn't give his players a license to throw punches. Good for him for drawing a line in the sand, though I hope the NFL steps up with its own fine as well.

I was just going by the article ... says the fine was imposed by the NFL <shrugs>

So Comissioner Clouseau fines the guys $5K for fighting. Didn't Merriweather get fined $7.5K for (gasp!) taunting?

Meriweather said something about his mother. There is a difference

True. He deliberately set out to create swagger where none had any reason to exist. And I love that he is now half heartedly acknowledging while he may have made some mistakes this is who he is and what he will do because of all the superbowls his family has won being who they are. That would be exactly zero Rex as anything beyond a coordinator or position coach. As a HC your family's regular season track record is .500...and .000 if we're talking playoffs.

Still, Rex Ryan recognizes that "big talk" can be a problem for team that isn't winning games.

"That's probably true," Ryan said, but he remained resolute. "It can't be an issue for me. I'm not flinching one bit. That's who I am, that's what I believe. I think you open yourself up for criticism, but my thing is, I'm trying to establish a mentality and a belief in this football team, so with me, I'm never flinching. If I came in here to look good in the papers, I would have undersold myself and our football team and we could be raving about how great that we're 3-3.

"That's not what I came here to do. I came here to win Super Bowls and win championships, and if that puts added pressure on our team, maybe so. I will say this, I don't think you can win it without having that mentality. I know my family has been through a few of these Super Bowls [and] won a bunch of them, so I think that's how you get it done."

BTW his dad once punched his own OC in the face in mid game on national TV after blaming his pass happy offense for costing them games...so Shotsie, Jr. best be prepared...
