Said it during his press conference. Said "contrary to published reports" and smiled at (presumably) Breer, who was the only one to report it.

Re: Belichick: Alexander was not released

thats so funny

i imagine BB might know who gives info to Breer, and just sent that right along

Re: Belichick: Alexander was not released

Belichick is hilarious. Always on top of everything, and with his own understated humor

He was indeed officially released yesterday according to Pro Football Weekly's official transaction wire. Not sure why he could practice yesterday then. I guess Belichick only meant he wasn't released on Monday w/ TBC.

The NFL's official transaction wire says otherwise:

Team logo
New England Patriots

10/20 Tully Banta-Cain (LB) re-signed.
Michael Matthews (TE) cut.
Joey Galloway (WR) cut.
10/19 Tully Banta-Cain (LB) cut.
10/14 Terdell Sands (DT) cut.
Junior Seau (LB) signed.
10/7 Bruce Davis (LB) practice squad addition.

can we get an "And he actually wasn't" edit?

NFL Transactions Report

can we get an "And he actually wasn't" edit?

NFL.com is not the official NFL transaction wire in any way, shape, or form. It's just someone on the NFL web staff following transactions around the league. Believe me, I follow these things closer than I let on.

ProFootballWeekly.com has the ONLY official NFL transaction wire on the internet.

I believe you but it is interesting that ProFootballWeekly has a more accurate listing of league-wide transactions than the NFL's very own, official web site...LOL.

Where does it say that ProFootballWeekly is not on the official provider of NFL transaction information, but the exclusive provider of that content?

I do agree that they have a history of being more accurate than other sources for that information, but I'm skeptical about them being either the 'official' or the 'only official' source.

Why does this matter? Are we so worried that Belichick might have risked losing Alexander?

Do you have a source for this that you could share?

Please point out, where ProFootballWeekly, which describes itself as a Fantasy Sports Magazine, says it has the official Transaction list. I don't see that anywhere on their site. I don't see anywhere that the NFL states that ProFootballWeekly has anything to do with being the official transaction list.

As it is, I'm much more likely to believe THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE NFL, THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS, and THE OFFICIAL HEAD COACH OF THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS, over a fantasy rag.

Alexander seems to believe he was released:

(Belichick said you were never released on Monday, but they did release you Tuesday so that they could sign you, correct?) Yes. (Did the team inform you of this procedural matter?) I had a general idea of what was going on.

I took it that BB was talking semantics. Technically he was released, but it was just procedural.

It's the only one I've found in years of following this.

I would also recommend this website for rosters, which coincidentally also uses PFW has a source:

Many years of daily experience.

On their old website (prior to June/July 2009), they had a line to the effect of "daily transactions as reported to the NFL league office." The transactions I'm using and talking about are different than the ones under the Patriots team section, which are just the Stats, Inc. ones (see ESPN, major newspapers, etc.)

Believe me, that is what most people would tihnk, but you are wrong. I don't read any other part of Pro Football Weekly, I just go there for their transaction wire. It's had transctions (especially dealing with reserve lists) that no other outlets, including the teams, have announced. It also gives the injury that the player has when he is placed on IR, which no other outlets give officially, but the teams are obligated to report to the NFL.

For example, NFL.com (and as a result, Stats, Inc.) screwed up a few weeks ago and said Derrick, not Prescott Burgess was released and re-signed to the practice squad. No one at NFL.com (which is operationally different than the NFL) even noticed that such a transaction would be impossible.

NFL.com's transactions have improved over the past year or two, but by no means are they official. They used to only list players that have profiles within their own system. Still, for more complicated transactions (usually cutdowns in August/September) NFL.com missed about half of the players. It was laughable.

PFW also has when contracts are disapproved by the league (which happens often); NFL.com would never have that.

So is it safe to say then that Pro Football Weekly is the best source for transaction information, and that it has a history of being the most accurate, and most up-to-date with this info? But at the same time it is not 'official' in any sense as it has never been named by the NFL as the definitive source of this information?

Apparantly Pats1 is not the official source for information on who the official source for waivers is. ;)

I'm not sure that's how I'd put it.

I agree with the first point, but as to the second, it is official. But it's not PFW itself that's official, it's simply the transaction information, which PFW gets directly from the NFL. Not even NFL.com gets it directly.

So in a sense, without actually naming PFW as their official transaction outlet, the NFL has made it one over its own website.

But you don't actually know that, you suspect it from years of personal experience. I don't doubt that you're right, but when you declare something as official, you need to get it from the horse's mouth.

It is official. The horse just can't talk.

Who're the official semantics police on this board?
