Obviously alot of contract management is to try to stem any downside impact of upcoming CBA changes. I think the Pats management along with other owners are planning for a big showdown. I cannot forsee Pats committing large contracts to anyone until resolved.

The negotiations are going to be Brutal as new Union head has Washington DC's ear and will threaten with anti trust legislation. Lockout probably better than 50-50 chance

But with the economy the way it is, I cannot see never ending salary increases or the NFL will wind up like GM.

You want to lower ticket prices and salary just eliminate the 50% Travel and entertainment deduction and corporate boxes will be empty.

In other news, the sun rose this morning and is expected to set this evening.

NFL owners should be concerned. The Players Union head was a lawyer for US AG Eric Holder and a member of President Obama's transition team. Given the current trend for the Executive Branch and Congress to insinuate itself into the business affairs of several major US heretofore private industries, it would not be unreasonable to expect at least some backchannel threats over revoking the anti-trust exemption.

Don't go political because I could have a field day on your last statement, precisely because without "insinuating" itself, those banks and carmakers meltdown and cease to exist ala Lehman and Saturn, and the USA then goes into a great depression. I don't think the plan going in was to pad the fat arses of mismanaging corporate execs, but that's what happened.

The salary cap (and floor) is a set percentage of NFL revenue. The cap(and contracts) keep going up because NFL teams keep making more money.

It really is that simple.

You're going political. I simply stated facts substantiating my conjecture without injecting opinion. I'm commenting on the realities facing the NFL owners in dealing with a very well connected Player Rep.

Your post was as political as his, and seeing as how you brought it up, you deserve the blame. You were most certainly not stating "acts substantiating my conjecture without injecting opinion"

There is only one single sentence in your post that is fact, and not conjecture:
The Players Union head was a lawyer for US AG Eric Holder and a member of President Obama's transition team.

I fail to see the non-factual side of my post. Unlike the reply I did not essay a totally irrelevant opinion concerning the indisputable facts I posted. If my conjecture about the possibility of backchannel communication was overtly political, than I concede.

I think a black helicopter is flying over your house as we speak.......uh oh.......now someone is at MY door....is that an eyeball looking at me on my computer screen....c a n ' t ty p e any m o re.. .. sleeeeeepy

I do not think that it is a political statement to indicate that the head of the union worked for a major player in the current administration and that the anti-trust exemption is even more of an issue than if this weren't the case.

Stating where he worked is not. Correct.

Stating that there are going to be back court dealings and that the current administration has a trend of inserting itself in private businesses most certainly is.

Autos, banks, energy, healthcare, pro sports, college sports...etc etc etc....This is not a trend, these are facts. Congressmen, Senators, and the Executive Branch have weighed in on all these industries ( and sports is big business) just in the last few months. Football and Congress are intertwined, that is fact. Pretending that that the federal gov't will not be a factor in these negotiations is naive. The two have been adjoined in the past and will be in the future.

The NFL will never wind up like GM. GM does a horrible job at competing, the NFL does not have to compete.

I recognize you dont like the statement, but which part of it are you disputing?
Do you dispute the trend exists, or the conclusion that its existence may signal an involvement here as well? He also didn't say there are going to be, he said he wouldn't be surprised, which is a large difference in the context of your reaction.

I'll say it ...THERE WILL BE BACK ROOM DEALINGS...and they have already taken place. DeMaurice Smith took a large group of player reps into Congress recently for a series of meet and greets with various reps. The back channel process is an ongoing reality. So let's stop with this PC crap and accept the truth...football and politics are not mutually exclusive.

NFL players meet with Congress members to round up political support

A lockout is coming. The whole thing is like watching a train wreck about to happen in slow motion. All these fools (mainly the owners) are so greedy that they just won't be able to help shooting themselves in the foot. Some things will never change.
