Ian's Daily Blog - Looking accross the Twitter-verse this morning I noticed an interesting comment regarding Patriots linebacker Adalius Thomas, who was benched by head coach Bill Belichick on Sunday. Most reports indicated that Thomas being inactive was due to “performance related issues.”* Tom Curran of NBC Sports gave an interesting take via Twitter on the veteran’s “lack of effort”.“Did [...]

Apparently, three veterans were called out by Belichick for their performance in the DEN game, and had their starting positions taken away for a week. Two responded well. The other responded with attitude and was inactivated for the game.

Ah...the plot thickens. First, break his strong will, then rebuild.

When a guy has 20M in the bank, it's a little hard to "break his will".

Hopefully BB has learned from this. Don't overpay for "talent". AT is just another guy and he's being paid like a superstar. It's a shame.

I don't see this one working out well.

I'm not smart enough to figure out his contract totally but it looks like he's cuttable this offseason without a big cap hit as his salary increases to about $5M next year. We have too many young players to have a bad attitude if those quotes were accurate. Right now he has us over a barrell but I doubt he'll be with us next season unless I'm totally misunderstanding his cap situation.

Great post, Ian. It's pretty well-known that BB benched AD due to performance. But what I am trying to figure out is when things started going wrong. Based on this excerpt from BBs PC yesterday, I found these comments interesting...

Coach Bill Belichick was asked how things will proceed with Thomas this week.

“Everything’s the same for every player,’’ Belichick said. “They’ve all got the same job: come in, learn the game plan, be ready to go. Substitutions and playing time are all coaches’ decisions; they’re not players’ decisions.

“A player’s job is to be ready to play, and if he’s put into the game, then go out there and play his best. All 53 guys, it’s the same for all of them.’’

Sounds like his beef with AD went beyond game performance and a couple of weeks ago. He was missing practices and when he was in practices, he wasn't applying himself.

I think back to when Seymour skipped out to attend his grandfather's funeral and BB did not start him for the Denver 2003 MNF game. People said that his benching had nothing to do with the death, rather it was BB making an effort to adjust Seymour's attitude.

May be the same set of circumstances here.

Just wish that this would go away an AD would start wrecking offenses and play to his potential.

My .02$

Makes one wonder if Ellis Hobbs offseason comments about veterans who had already gotten paid taking plays off/not playing hurt applied to Seymour AND Thomas.

I was thinking the exact same thing.....

Parcell's would be putting a gas can above Adalius Thomas's locker asking if anything is left in the tank at this point.

If this guy doesn't change by the end of the season, cut him. He's costing us too much and giving too little. Screw this *****.

Trade him before next season. I was already annoyed with the guy anyway. Pretty sad when I had a better feeling seeing 59 making a play on the ball carrier than 96.

A trade would be an accellerated $3m cap hit. Not sure what an outright cut would mean to the cap.

Either way, I agree. If the perception is reality, then it's best to cut their losses and go in a different direction.

If there is no cap next year does it matter? You could get SOMETHING out of a trade. What would he be worth to a LB hungry team as far as picks?

No trade value unfortunately.

This was a major blunder. Paying this guy so much and tying so much money up in him. Sets a very bad example, taking the money and laughing all the way to the bank. Clubhouse lawyer to boot. Classic malcontent.

They may cut him this year.

I wouldn't be surprised if AD wants to rush the passer more. In his 3 years here, we haven't used him as a pass rusher exclusively for any stretch of time. Still, that's certainly no excuse for dogging it.

You are right, I re-looked at Miguel's page - that is manageable, however, if things have gone wrong unlike the $7.3M it would have cost this year.

Why not try letting Thomas play more of the role Burgess has been asked to getting after the passer, and let Burgess drop in coverage more... they both have been ailing respectively.

His salary is 5M next year or something like that. At that salary, no I don't think there's any demand.

If he were signed for 1M maybe, but he's not.

And again, that is only if there is a cap next year, RIGHT?
