It's all about freeing up cap space for Wilfork. Mankins and Ghost can be easily replaced if necessary.

Re: WEEI: Eric Alexander and Tully Banta-Cain will be back, with extensions

Wierd, talk about your low level priorities. The Patriots have 3 Probowlers that are pending free agents (Wilfork, Mankins and Ghost). Ghost and Mankins may be RFAs (if there is not CBA).

the thing is that none of the 3 are cost prohibitive franchise tag-wise, and if there is no cap, the pats will have 2 tags to use as well as RFA tenders

if the pats want 'em, they will stay

They won't be freeing up any cap space...

Seems the Pats are using some of the $4-5 mill of this years cap space in order to pay off contracts for next year. Example: Cut TBC, thereby spending $600+K of 2009 money, resign TBC with higher 2009 salary and lower 2010 salary. TBC gets his extension, alot of up front money and a minimal salary in 2010.

WEEI and that new station are both reporting it. Also Albert Breer.
I live in Mass and I Can't get the new station...... :D

There is only one franchise tag available (or two tags if one is transition which is useless because of poison pill provisions) but Mankins and Gostkowski are both RFA if no new CBA is signed...

How can TBC have a lower cap number. He is making the vet minimum of $620,000 and and his cap charge is even less than $620,000 bcause he qualifies for the vet min reduced cap. There is no way his cap hit can be reduced this year.

Pats just resigned TBC per Adam Schefter. I really don't think a trade is going to happen.

If I didn't read this, I never would have believed than anyone could make four erroneous points using only 18 words.

Ghost could easily be replaced. He gets the jitters on big field goals and kickers are a dime a dozeno. He is good on kickoffs.

Mankins is pretty good.

I don't understand why you cut vet. min players to "free cap space" if you're gonig to resign them. It doesn't make sense.

I hope to goodness gracious they don't get that bum from SD. He is kind of lousy.

Wilfork is definitely walking after this year-a-roo.

I think the theory is they are spending to the cap this year and opening up cash for next year with the thought that if a new deal is put in place with the union they wil have more cap space next year.

The veteran minimum players have to be cut before they can be

re-signed to a multi-year contract.

HUH? He gets jitters on big field goals? Where do you get this from? Gost is one of the best on kick-offs and he's one of the best kickers in the game currently.

Mankins is pretty good.

Mankins is better than pretty good. Mankins is about a step below John Hannah.

Why do you think that Wilfork is walking?
