Though the Patriots apparently cut linebacker Tully Banta-Cain with the intent of bringing him back in short order, New England might have some competition for his services.

Per a league source, the Browns are sniffing around Banta-Cain, and they might make a serious run at swiping him.

Banta-Cain has played under Browns coach Eric Mangini and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, and Banta-Cain likely would instantly become a starter in the Browns' 3-4 defense.

Even if he's not interested, Banta-Cain could flirt with the Browns in order to get something more than a prorated one-year minimum deal from the Patriots.

Bottom line? He's got leverage. The question is whether he'll use it.

I'd imagine the Pats and TBC had some sort of gentleman's arrangement before he was let go. Unless the Browns really do something off the wall, I don't see anything changing.

TBC has been there and done that with SF. Besides, who wants to go play with the ratboy. His own players hate him, the facility is a staph infection waiting to happen and they routinely throw each other under the bus. That's not leverage unless Eric starts offering double and guarantees it.

If the Pats released him with the understanding he would sign a new contract, it would be only a benefit to TBC not the Pats seeing that he was making the minimum. I doubt if that is the case he would sign with the Browns. Mangini is a weasel.

They've released like 5 guys today, so I really doubt, if they were planning on resigning him, they would be looking at one-year minimum. They wouldn't need to release him for the roster spot, and they're not saving any cap. I don't think 1-year minimum is even in play.

I think TBC came here because he prefers winning. If he came here because no one showed real interest then I'll say he does have leverage.

Exactly. This is where Florio is just throwing stuff against the wall hoping 5% of it sticks and then he looks like he actually knows something.

TBC already did that path with SF a couple of years ago and came back this year proclaiming that money ain't everything and the priority to him was to get back to winning football and the BB organization.

Why on earth would TBC then try to do the same thing he did with SF, but this time for waaaaaay less money?????

He came here because he realized what the system meant to his career. Mangini plays the same system, only with less than stellar results where most of his players are concerned. For that reason while TBC could go there and play, it would do little to re-invigorate his career. And we all know how loyal BB is vs. how disloyal the ratboy is. Ergo ratboy would have to double any offer and guarantee it to represent leverage.

Ratgini called Florio and told him to leak the Brown's interest in TBC... it is so obvious!

Florio gets a big story out of it and Mangina gets to Fck with BB. If nothing else, he may be able to get the Pats to pay more for TBC, and maybe he gets lucky with his 0.000001% chance of actually signing him away from us for a lot more money.

Either way, it is a win-win for both Florio and Manjudus.
