Any other coach that cut Tully Banta-Cain and kept Derek Burgess would be getting some serious heat.

With Belichick we all wonder.....
What does he know that we don't know....

I was delighted with the effort I had seen from Banta-Cain.
As far as I could see he was our best pass rusher on a team that
needs pass rushers.

I haven't seen anything from Burgess this year.
He appears to be a total bust in my eyes.

I still wonder....
What does Belichick see in Burgess???
There must be something we are missing.

Belichick is not the type to keep players around just because he
traded a draft pick to get them.

Re: Only Belichick could get away with this.....

It's a procedural maneuver.

They're going to re-sign/extend Banta Cain and they're not allowed to do that with someone who is under a contract signed within 12 months.

TBC ain't going anywhere. It's going to be ok, don't let this ruin your morning.

Good Point.... I hope you are right.

Good point but the only problem is that he was signed as a free agent by the Patriots in Feb 09 according to the player roster on the Patriots' web site. There has to be another reason for doing this even if I have no idea what it is.

I can't imagine it being anything else. Let's look at the facts:

1) He's been one of the most productive players on D.

2) He's very flexible in that he's also a ST ace.

3) He knows the system, with 5 years in it.

4) He signed with the Pats with the biggest hometown discount possible - - the vet minimum.

5) Cutting him and not re-signing him leaves even that small amount (620k) as unusable spent money - - the Pats would still have to pay him.

6) When told of the cut over the Sirius phone interview yesterday, he sounded non-plussed and continued talking about the team as he had earlier.

and finally:

7) Eric Alexander (Eric freakin' Alexander!) is still on the team at the same salary.

I still think there is going to be a coming out game for Burgess over the next few weeks. Didn't Tedy say something similar? We got him late in camp, so don't jump ship yet.

Re: Only Belichick could get away with this.....

Burgess was in for 40 snaps yesterday while TBC was in for 28 - if its not a trade, maybe BB feels that going forward Burgess will be more impressive?

keep in mind two of TBC's sacks came in the first game

Re: Only Belichick could get away with this.....

TBC contributes a lot on special teams. If Shmessy isn't right, I think my head will explode (maybe it will anyway).

February of this year was within 12 months?

The way that I read the original post was that you can't play the release/extend games with a contract that was signed within 12 months and Feb 09 was 8 months ago. I may have misread something, if so, sorry.

As long as you don't count McGowan, Meriweather, Butler, Wilhite, Bodden, Mayo, Guyton, WIlfork, Warren, Green, Wright and Pryor, I guess you could say he has been almost as productive and Thomas, Woods, Ninkovich, Springs and Sanders.

He is more productive than Burgess and Lockett, though.

I was super pleased when we got TBC for a 7th round pick, but he has NEVER been one of our most productive players. I love his pass rush when it works, but it doesn't work all that often and he cannot set the edge and he is ineffective against the run.

But except for all that, sure, he is our most productive defensive player.

TBC is a good STer and has a good motor going after the passer, but a liability vs the run. Thats is him...

If he was more productive than Burgess, he'd be playing more than Burgess. He's not, despite the fact he has more sacks.

The point was the exact opposite- within 12 months you CANNOT do an extension so you MUST do the release & later re-sign move. If the goal is to lock up TBC long-term, releasing him before re-signing him to a longer deal is what they MUST do.

Re: Only Belichick could get away with this.....

1) Burgess is starting and playing more than Tully because he is a better player and offers more in every game. That is Belichick's judgement. I would note that for now Burgess is a 1-year rent-a-player like Bodden and Seau.

2) I am a HUGE fan of Banta-Cain and expect him to be re-signed to a long-term contract to join Aiken as a long-term special teams specialist. That being said, Banta-Cain is also our best pass-rusher and should continue to play on passsing downs if he is re-signed.

He's been one of the better LBs, more productive than Alexander, Thomas, Burgess. Cutting him makes no sense unless they intend to resign him.

Don't worry -- we have just come back to Rule One of Belichick-watching -- no one knows what's going on!

Which is why some of us are flabbergasted when people routinely fly off the handle at the mere suggestion that IBBWT is not some weak minded cop out...
