Wesley’s hit brings more attention to head trauma
Some will try to excuse it as a matter of poor timing. Or just an unfortunate mistake. However, it’s doubtful the NFL will give Panthers safety Dante Wesley(notes) the benefit of the doubt. Not after executives see the video replay of a nightmarish hit that only draws further attention to the troublesome issue of head trauma in professional football.
Brutal? Absolutely. Dirty? It certainly looked that way.

Yeah... NFL issue...;)

Re: OT:Wesley’s hit brings more attention to head trauma (Video)

Wesley is an idiot and those people who say its football are idiots. Football doesnt mean you launch yourself up high on someone when they're waiting for a punt. Even if he didnt call a fair catch, the ball wasn't near him yet so its a penalty first of all and a dangerous play.Cheap shot

Re: OT:Wesley’s hit brings more attention to head trauma (Video)

That should be a multi-game suspension.

Re: OT:Wesley’s hit brings more attention to head trauma (Video)

I won't watch the video but helmut style blows have to be dealt with severely. Sadly, I have minimal faith in Inspector Clouseau's ability to discriminate between dangerous, intending to inflict harm hits vs inadvertant 'blows to the head'. I'm not saying that the rule calling a penalty on blow to the head is wrong. No. Don't want refs judging intent during a game. It's the NFL's silly fines for such plays after having the time to review the film. Save the $ and the suspensions for crap like the Tits DB's head shot on Brady yesterday. And NO fine for the Tits lineman who accidently touched Brady in the head.

Agreed, if not the entire season. That was perhaps the most blatant example of an intentional head shot I've ever seen.

cheap hit for sure. however, if he did think (1) the guy had the ball or (2) he could time the hit perfectly, why would you suspend him for the season, if at all. it was an aggressive play. he clearly didnt lead with his helmet.

If there were even a reasonable likelihood of (1), I'd just "let him off" with a giant fine.

But the ball doesn't even come on screen until after Wesley has laid Smith out. Equally importantly, the intent was to demolish a player, and, unfortunately for Wesley, (a) he did "misjudge," badly, and (b) there is precedent for major fines and suspensions.

Re: OT:Wesley’s hit brings more attention to head trauma (Video)

It was NOT a head shot. Wesley did not lead with his helmet or hit Smith in the head. He DID launch off his feat, lead with his shoulder and hit Smith high while Smith was defenseless waiting to fair catch the ball. It was a dirty hit but not head to head.

yah i agree with what you say. being a punter, and never a gunner though, i dont know how easy it is to determine how close the ball is to the returner.

it was a cheap shot, and for his horrible misjudgment, he will certainly be fined a large amount at the very least

Normally, I'm a proponent of hard hits, but not in this case. That hit CLEARLY had malicious intent behind it. He went under the chin and lifted his forearm. Not to mention, Wesley was looking RIGHT at him as he was coming down field. He knew damn well the ball wasn't there yet.

If you watch closely the video , he also punched in the face Aqib Talib #25 .

WTF was that? The ball wasn't even there yet.....

Those teams hate each other but thats no excuse, thats was just another one of those cowardly hits you see defenders celebrating after jacking up recievers who aren't even looking. Thats not football, thats cowards play. Even though it wasn't helmet to helmet the hit was still high enough to rock his head back.

That D.B. should be ejected from the season. Ridiculous.
