New England Patriots Blog - First half a complete success for Patriots - ESPN Boston
Defensively, we've seen a return to the 3-4 for the Patriots. This is a bit of a surprise given that their top edge-setter, Adalius Thomas, is inactive. But Derrick Burgess, Pierre Woods and Rob Ninkovich have combined to play outside linebacker, with Jerod Mayo and Gary Guyton manning the inside linebacker spots.

The Patriots' run fits seem better out of the 3-4. The run defense was surrendering 4.4 yards per carry entering the game, which is high for a Bill Belichick-coached defense. The Patriots are also pressuring better out of the standard four-man rush from this alignment against a solid offensive line.

Re: Return to 3-4 ?

This game anyway.

Re: Return to 3-4 ?

Man, this team is going to have a ton of flexibility by the end of the season; opponents can get any number of varying defensive looks.

Re: Return to 3-4 ?

No surprise considering Seau just came back.

Re: Return to 3-4 ?

It'd be great to see some more 3-4 looks. Not sure how often they were in the 3-4 today, but way more than I've seen all year. And apart from a few big runs from Chris Johnson (which should be expected), they did pretty well against the run.

Re: Return to 3-4 ?

Mayo healthy for the second week and the addition of Seau make it possible for us to run much more 3-4, which I think is better for the team. Warren and Wilfork thrive in the 3-4.

Re: Return to 3-4 ?

Todays conditions can skew anything...we'll see as we move on.

Re: Return to 3-4 ?

It was game specific to stop Chris Johnson.

It was game specific to stop Chris Johnson.

128 yds later say it wasn't very effective if that is indeed the reason......

Re: Return to 3-4 ?

It is hard to say how good the defense was today really. The game was so far out of reach, the titans had their hearts ripped out--it was clear they just didn't want to be there.

If anyone wants to nitpick, Pats didn't have a single sack I think. But who really cares, this is the greatest PATS nation day I can remember in months!

Re: Return to 3-4 ?

We didn't give up the "big play" if that counts for anything with you.

Stop it, Chris had a run of 48 yds......
That's a pretty big play no matter how ya slice it, nevermind at least 1 big one that was called back for holding.

Chris Johnson was not held in check, the QBS were
