this morning. Butler was a big brother to Jazz Howard, their top CB with pro athleticism and potential. Howard lead the BE in punt returns last year, and he did a fantastic job defending against the balls that came his way when teams threw away from Butler. Howard was a junior.

He and a friend were stabbed outside the student union. Not at a party.

Butler's mind will surely be elsewhere today. And no one can blame him.

My first thought too. A terrible story and a lot of f*cked up people.

As I said after Cassel's dad passed away, whatever Butler decides to do (play or sit) is fine with me. Death may be universal, but grief is very much personal.

RIP Jazz Howard ... my prayers for his family, friends, team and school.

Amen. . . .

Such a tragedy...it was on the main part of campus. No houses or dorms anywhere close to where it happened. Dont understand people in todays world...

That is messed up and sad. Wow. What was the motivation behind the murders??

Check out 1:10. So sad.

I don't know that Butler's mind will be "elsewhere." I think this may make him focused. Though, like you said, I wouldn't blame him if his mind is elsewhere.

What a horrible story...condolences to Mr. Howard's friends and family.

Here's a quote from UConn's punter, Desi Cullen (who's a team captain), from the Hartford Courant:

Hearing the news that he's a father breaks my heart. The idea that he will grow up without his father tears me apart, just to think what it would be like for that young child. But as Jazz looks down on us I can promise him and his family that son or daughter will have 105 uncles for the rest of its life. And we will do what it takes to not get through this but to grow from it because we're not just going to get through it. We're going to take something away from it, every single player on this team will take something away from this exerience and we will all grow from this experience and become better men because of Jazz."

In a thread like this, I hate to disagree/be nitpicky but that's not exactly true. Near Gampel are the graduate dormitories, some of the campus apartment complexes and two of the high rise dormitories.

- Speaking as a UConn alumni.

Yes but according to some of the video I've seen, this looks to have happened on the corner between the Student Union and Jorgensen Auditorium, across from the field house. At least that is where one of the videos on ESPN showed police tape.

Ah, I haven't seen any video. I just heard near Gampel.

I guess by some stretch that corner between SU and Jorgensen are close to Gampel....I guess compared to Von der Mehden or something but those are almost two entirely different areas. That corner is where the Engineering/Math/Science nerds are (near MSB and various engineering and science buildings), near Gampel is heading more towards frats and South Campus.

Gampel is in the upper/mid-left. SU is across the street and down the road from SU is Jorgensen.

Re: Darius Butler's protege at UConn was stabbed and killed

There was a short but touching piece on ESPN which mentioned how Randy Edsall is being looked to by the entire university to help them through this tragedy. HCRE is really going to earn his paycheck here but I also think he is more than up to the task.

Re: Darius Butler's protege at UConn was stabbed and killed

I wonder if there are any stats to back me up but it seems like the amount of deaths at UConn (either accidental or not) has been pretty high since I was a freshman until now... at least 3-5 over a decade?

Or more, I'm not sure.

Re: Darius Butler's protege at UConn was stabbed and killed

I haven't seen a stat on deaths on campus but this is the first homocide in over 30 years.

I was a student from the fall of 97-spring of 02 and I can only think of two student deaths, both were car accidents off campus.

Re: Darius Butler's protege at UConn was stabbed and killed

Well, there were a couple drunk driving deaths on campus (stemming from fraternities being irresponsible with their car key policy) and there were a couple attacks in recent years, a couple lockdowns.

Anyway, getting away from the point : any news yet what the two groups were fighting over? Last I heard there were two groups involved anyway.
