Brian Baldinger: Belichick's defense is outdated

Re: Brian Baldinger:Belichick's defense is outdated

This guy is an idiot. This is the defense Belichick has chosen to deploy this year. Every week the top tacklers have been the safeties and cornerbacks. Perhaps with Mayo back this will change ... but this is what Belichick has chosen. Clogs up the line ... LBer's cover the TE's and RB's and he makes the teams try to beat us with their WR's.

Once the offense gets on track I think we'll be fine. Anything +21 gives us a great chance to win each week and we should be doing that with little problem. We should be at least 4-1 so I would say it's working and it will get even better.

Re: Brian Baldinger:Belichick's defense is outdated

He gives too much credit to assuming that Belichick controls everything.

Dean Pees has imprinted his own style upon the defense, for years.

No disrespect, but have you been watching the same games I've been watching? I think the Patriots are lucky to be 3-2.

Yes I have been ... every year I've been here I've been saying the defense takes 6-8 weeks to develop. considering all the turnover I think they have done a good job. It's not a defense loaded with talent ... it'a a blue collar group. If the offense was doing it's job ... yes ... we would be 4-1 ... no doubt in my mind. At 3-2 we are not in bad shape at all.

Re: Brian Baldinger:Belichick's defense is outdated

Anyone who isn't impressed with what this defense has done (mostly without Jerrod Mayo at that), has their expectations way too high. Even for BB and the Patriots.

Let's face it, with Tom Brady and Randy Moss's salaries on the other side of the ball it's very unlikely you're going to have a dominant defense. We've faced some top quality teams and have yet to give up more than 17 PA on defense in regulation. I'm more than happy with that from our defense.

I think you both could be correct, and have good pts to both your reasonings. I think Icy's right in saying we could/probably should be 4-1, in the sense that we had DEN right where we wanted. But at the same time, I think you are quite correct when you say we are lucky to be 3-2. I do not think we have had any dominating performances outside of ATL, and of course that was 16-10 in the 3rd quarter.

I do think there's the ability to compete with anyone and everyone even at this point, and that's certainly a good thing. I think we all expect major improvement, and hopefully we can step it up quickly. That 5 game stretch in a few wks starting and ending with Miami is going to be a challenge for sure.

Re: Brian Baldinger:Belichick's defense is outdated

We could easily be 5-0 or 1-4. The only game that didn't hang in the balance until the end was Atlanta.

Re: Brian Baldinger:Belichick's defense is outdated

Considering our starting MLB has been out for nearly all the games, and we've tried to replace Seymour, in conjunction with an entirely new secondary I'm pretty pleased overall.
I'm not thrilled with how the defense has been called, but hopefully we'll see some better stuff once Mayo is back full time. I really want to see AdT used more in the pass rush, I just can't help but look at his size/weight and think he'd be better off closer to the LOS.

I think that's a copout. The Giants have $100 million tied up into one player on offense and have still managed to put out a top three defense for three years in a row. Right now they're at number one.

Brian Baldinger is a thinking man's Mark Schlereth...which in no way is a compliment of any kind.

If the offense was clicking like we know it can then the Pats would easily be 5-0. I can think of about 11 points that they could've had on the Jets if Brady had been like his old-self. But I agree, the defense needs 6-8 weeks to gel and have a few playmakers steppin' up. If they stay healthy, my early money would be on Mcgowan, Mayo, Bodden amd Merriweather by week 14.

Speaking of Schlereth, I've noticed he's been more than fair regarding the Pats lately...dare I say, even complimentary at times. My theory is that he can't criticize the Pats or BB anymore without it reflecting on his beloved Broncos since McD is the HC there now. Whatever the reason, it's kinda freaking me out, really.

EDIT: On topic-ish...I pretty much just skimmed the article, but really, I can't even get started criticizing the D (which is performing better than expected anyway, IMO) until I can feel confident that the O is doing its job. What can I say, just call me one-dimensional!

and look at their semi-no-name receivers, they've been terrific.

I don't know what you've been seeing but I agree and Brian made a great point. Since Pees has been the DC this is the defense we've been seeing.

STRAIGHT VANILLA

being a woman you obviously know or have identified that primary male trait...manwhorism...he'll do or say anything to hop in the sack with the current Denver coaching structure even if it means dating the girl he used to make fun of all the time.

Re: Brian Baldinger:Belichick's defense is outdated

There gets to be a point where defensive success doesn't come down to strictly Xs and Os. I feel this defense has acquired a **** Jauron type of personality to it, or a play to not lose mentality--they are scared of giving up the big play. As a defensive player, you can't play scared, you have to make the opposition fear YOU. I like Meriweather's brashness and Wilfork's fiery attitude and leadership, but aside from this, there is little intimidation factor--these guys just seem to be just going through the motions. NFL offenses dream of facing the Pats and Phil Simms mentioned this in his most recent telecast. Ultimately this laid back attitude stems from the defensive coordinator, who is supposed to instill confidence into this young players and make them excited about going out to hit or tackle someone. The Pats tackling was atrocious last year, and his been marginally better this year. These vanilla defenses NEVER win super bowls regardless of how awesome the offense is(which is average at best right now).

I think Butler's going to be a big factor by then also ... not a starter ... but a big factor.

Re: Brian Baldinger:Belichick's defense is outdated

so let me get this straight..."bend don't break" defense has NOW morphed into "laid back" defense? all these 30 + point blowouts teams are laying on the Patriots sure back THAT up...oh...wait...

Re: Brian Baldinger:Belichick's defense is outdated

scheme is outdated or not. pats have not been able to replace their playmakers on defense since last 2-3 yrs .
