If anything I think Orton is surrounded by superb talent at the WR and a good young RB to compliment the passing game and he has done a good job.

King thinks Orton could be on his way to a 2001 Brady season based on play thus far - I say he is nuts.

Not the same thing IMO,If anything to compare Orton to I would say Ben Roethlisberger who came into the starting job by injury like Brady.

I do think that Orton and the Broncos may find themselves in a rough neighborhood when the go to SD and IMO will lose this game and once they get a loss who knows if the confidence factor will change.

Peter King needs to fill column space and attract eyeballs via controversey.

Every week, King says something that reminds me that he's more concerned with throwing out random declarations than conducting any kind of coherent analysis. This was that statement for this week.

I was a big Orton over Cutler fan this summer... but I would've never thought he'd be as productive as he's been so far. I like the fact that he "just wins". His record is actually quite impressive.

I, like you guys, do no think he's headed for 01 Brady results. That doesn't happen that often, and we were lucky to be around to see it. It's still kinda hard to believe everything that happended that year.

Peter King gets on a different guy's jock literally every other week. He jumps to a new conclusion literally week to week. His columns are usually entertaining. But youve just gotta know going in the man defines flavor of the week.

2001 Brady sounds reasonable actually even if he hits a rough patch:

2001 Brady
Rating 86.5
Completion 63.9%
TDs 18
INTs 12
Yards 2843

2009 Orton (5 games)
Rating 97.4
Completion 63%
TDs 7
INTs 1
Yards 1236

2009 Orton (projecting off 5 games)
TDs 22
INTs 3
Yards 3955

Except Brady in 2001 was a second-year player who had never started a game in the NFL, or even gone through a training camp as a starter for that matter. This is Orton's fifth year in the league, and he had plenty of starting experience coming in, so he's much closer to his ceiling than Brady was circa 2001.

I think your subject line is a little bit inflamatory (you'll get all the King haters to look thinking King said Orton will be as good as Brady), but it's tough to argue with the success Orton has had so far this season. I will be interesting to see how the season plays out though. Orton is a good QB who has been given a solid game plan tailored to his style. It's outside of a player's comfort zone that makes a really good QB. So far Orton's defence has been solid - let's see how Orton does when facing a deficit of a couple TDs.

Did Brady overcome any double digit deficits in 2001?

I like the way he says Orton could be on his way to lead the Broncos like Brady did in 2001 but quickly says don't compare Orton to Brady - He needs to take time before he writes columns so as to not confuse people with his random wild thoughts

I think his "coffeenerdness" impacts his player assessement objectiveness. He needs to switch to "decaf-nerdness"

Orton is doing very well but 2001 Brady??

This is a good point and I was thinking something along those lines.

Josh McDaniel...is it possible he MADE Brady? And now that he's gone, Brady has regressed. Meanwhile McDaniel's latest protege is playing lights out.

Maybe Orton hadn't reached his "ceiling" before because he didn't have a knowledge QB coach like McDaniel (I know he's the head coach but I'm sure he points out flaws in his mechanics if he sees them).

Besides, even if Orton is "closer to his ceiling"...it looks like a PRETTY HIGH ceiling!! He outplayed Brady by a mile. What was he 80% passing?

Brady's 2001 stats weren't anything out of this world, so assuming Orton stays healthy, I think he'll surpass them.

In terms of wins, I doubt Orton gets to 14 wins (counting playoffs & a Super Bowl) but who knows. Denver looks like a good team so far and Orton has been a winner for most of his career.

If any coordinator was a help to the career of Tom Brady then Charlie Weis would be the man IMO,Together Weis's game planning and Brady's talent were the PERFECT combination of Brains and Athletism...Can't same the same for Weis at ND though

Orton may be able to become the 2001-2003 Brady (the ultimate game manager). I doubt he can turn into the 2004 on Brady though.

all these writers are about is 'access'. if you see all through the season king has had good media accesswith the broncos and McD and everyone there. So he will wax poetry. Same with the favres.

I thought Orton had a great game against the Pats and was, at least in that game, as good as any quarterback the Pats have faced this season. he was patient and took what the pats would give him and let his players make plays after the catch. In my opinion he was significantly better against the Pats than he was against Dallas the prior week. That said, I think this was a game the Pats gave away with to many mistakes.

But, if Orton can continue to improve on the play he gave against the Pats, I think the Broncos will be a formidable team in the playoffs.

unfortunately for orton he woudlnt be playing against a dean pees defense every week

Watch him throw up a stinker this week. I'm so amused each week at the number of people that make long term predictions on a season....now even a career based on the performance in the last game or so that's been played. What will it be next week, that Brayland Edwards will lead the league in touchdowns this year?

So is Orton suddenly a "franchise" QB?

With the new definition of "franchise" meaning putting up 17 points?
