I know there is a formal postgame discussion thread, but wanted to jot down some thoughts while my head was clear (if that ever happens).

First, congrats to the Broncos fans. Your team deserved to win the game. Any time you come back from 10 down in the 2nd half, hold the other team scoreless in the 2nd half, and put together a 98 yard TD drive you deserve to win the game. It is clear that McDaniels has you mentally tough, not giving up, making adjustments, and ready to play all 60+ minutes.

I can't remember feeling this depressed about a game in a while. It's not that we lost. I would have been just as upset if we had won. It's not the result that bothers me, it's how we played. I turned the game off after the 3rd quarter because I couldn't take it anymore.

Last week I would have been upbeat even if we had lost because I thought we played well against a top team. This week I would have been just as dejected if we had won, because we played terribly. And there were a number of telling points to take away form that performance.

1. Keys to the game.

I had previously posted a thread on my 5 keys to the game:

http://www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/messageboard/10/280406-5-keys-victory.html

#1 on that list was maintaining intensity, focus and aggresiveness on a road trip to Mile High and after a big win against Baltimore. I think we failed miserably. The intensity was noticeably lacking in comparison to the Baltimore game. Frankly, I thought it was lacking all week on this board, with numerous comments suggesting that people were taking this game lightly despite being a road game at Mile High against an undefeated team. I said in that thread that I thought this was a game we should win but also a very loseable game, and we lost it.

Of my 5 keys, the only one I thought we did a good job of was stopping Elvis Dumervil the Denver pass rush. I didn't think we had good offensive balance, didn't think we got pressure on defense, and don't think we played well against the Denver receivers, allowing 2 TD catches to Brandon Marshall.

2. 2nd Half Adjustments

This is the 3rd game out of 5 where we went into halftime with a lead and were largely shut down in the 2nd half. Two 2nd half shutouts in 5 games bodes very poorly for this team, and we had the opportunity to put both this game and the Baltimore game away with 2nd half offensive execution and failed both times. The fact that opposing defenses are largely stopping us in the 2nd half suggests that our offense is unbalanced and predictable. Today it looked unbalanced and predictable. Also very boring.

We had blamed previous poor offensive performances to rustiness by Brady, to getting flustered by pressure, and to injuries. The fact is we just may not be a very good offense. Our play calling stinks, our running game is mediocre at best, and our passing game is predictable and can be stopped.

3. Road Wimps

We're 3-2 so far, 3-0 at Foxboro and 0-2 on the road. That's a very bad sign. 5 of our last 8 games come on the road. And, the way we are playing, it looks like we will have to go on the road in the playoffs if we make it that far. Was this a "tough" road game? I think it was a very winnable game, we just didn't play well enough.

4. Inconsistency

We just haven't been a very consistent team so far this year. I thought we were getting better after early rust, but we threw a duck egg in this big game. This reminds me a bit of 2005, when we couldn't win 2 games in a row for the first half of the season before finishing 11-5. Not the hallmark of an elite team.

The Bottom Line

We're 3-2. We have not shown very much consistency so far this season. It looked like we were on the right track after the Atlanta and Baltimore games, but this game was a major regression: lack of balance, predictable and unimaginative play calling, poor execution, lack of aggressiveness on defense, soft zone coverage and no pass rush. We got a lot of lucky breaks and still couldn't put the game away. To have this kind of stinker really makes me question our ability to step it up to consistently perform at an elite level.

We have 6 extremely winnable games left: at home against Tennessee, Carolina and Jacksonville; and on the road against Tampa Bay (in London), Buffalo and Houston. None of those teams have looked good. We have 5 fairly (to very) tough games left: at home against Miami and the Jets, and on the road against Indy, New Orleans and Miami (I list Miami as "fairly tough" because they always give us a hard time; the others are very tough games). But we need to show much more consistency in how we play than we have shown over the past 5 games.

It's time for a gut check. We are not a first tier team right now. There's plenty of time left, but a long way to go to be a consistently elite team. And we'll probably have to do it the hard way. It's quite possible for us to put a late run together and get hot like Pittsburgh in 2005 or the Giants in 2007, but so far we just don't look consistent enough or good enough to run the table.

It's time for a gut check.

I'm most concerned about the play on the road. In Nov. there's 2 tough games at Indy and NO.

This is one game where I think the coaching and playcalling of Josh McDaniels in particular really let the Patriots down.

All of a sudden, a 3-2 record brings the Pats to the middle of the pack. Amazing what one week can do. Costly game to lose.

That's part of what bugs me. Win the game and we're 4-1 and in good shape for 12-4 or better. Lose and we're in the middle of the pack. We were up 10 at the half and could score a point in the 2nd half. We didn't make adjustments, didn't execute, and had many of the same kind of play calling and schematic issues which arose in the Jets game.

Bottom line, when clutch time came we didn't step up, and now we're in the middle of the pack, which is probably where we belong to be.

Only silver lining is that we should fly under the radar for some time. We're no where close to being one of the frontrunners at this point.

Bottom line is our franchise QB didnt step up today when he usually does his thing. We had the ball twice under 5 minutes and didnt do anything. Thats all on Brady.

I honestly don't see your problem, other than the normal depression after a loss.

Brady isn't ready. Isn't the "problem" really that simple? I might add that a strong QB coach and OC might make up for some of Brady's current issues. However, they will not be needed if and when Brady is near 100%.

The defense is coming along much faster than expected.

The colts were 3-4 last year with a receovering Manning. They were undefeated for the rest of the season.
=====================

Of course, the nightmare is that Brady will NOT come back to near 100% of his former self this season.

The adjustments issue is a big one. In our two losses, we had chances to win for sure. The other team made some adjustments, and ours just didn't work. Even if they negated each other, we'd be undefeated right now.

BB has a good track record on this, so I'm not sure what it is. But I hope it will improve.

The inconsistency is awful, but I guess it's to be expected with Brady coming back. On the defensive side, today was awful, but the last 3 weeks were way better than I could have imagined. It's still a new defense working people in, and I think they'll be inconsistent throughout most of the year as they mature and come together.

I still believe they will be good by the end of the season. But I also believe this won't be the last bad performance we see from them.

The good news is Balt and Pitt are 3-2. The bad news is Indy is 5-0. Denver doesnt scare me at all at 5-0 nor does Cincy at 4-1. SD is likely eliminated from the playoff picture! We have to do some more scoreboard watching this year with the Jets. They have a favorable schedule down the stretch.

The loss has nothing to do with it. It's how we played. Of course, I would prefer a win. But if we had played a solid game and lost to a very good team on the road then I would not feel this way. Most of what I wrote was thought out before the game was decided, and would have been written (with some variations) whether we had won or not.

We played a terrible game, going into a situation which was a perfect set up for laying a goose egg. And that's not the sign of a good team. I thought we had made adjustments after the Jets game, only to see us revert to the same kind of soft defense and predictable, unbalanced offense that we had in that game. We haven't shown we can win on the road against a good opponent, and we haven't shown the consistency needed to be a top team.

I see much more than "Brady's not ready yet". I see a lack of preparation, ability to make adjustments, and ability to maintain intensity and aggressiveness on the part of the coaching staff which worries me. TB executing at his old level may cover up for a lot of that, but I think there are some major flaws at the foundation of this team. I like a lot of things about it (the overall talent level and depth, and the speed and playmaking capability on defense in particular), but the way this game played out really worries me for the long haul this season.

You're right, Indy didn't show much last year through 7 games, and then got hot. Maybe it will happen. But it's more than just rustiness on TB's part, and the necessary corrections go fairly deep - deep enough to make me question whether we have what it takes to make them consistently.

Maybe Brady will get back to Brady but the second half is killing us and no adjustments are being made has to make one wonder.
The defense is fine and will only get better.
Who da thought? We would be worried about our offense scoring points?

It's obvious they have work todo, but as long as they build off what they've been doing and don't get worse I wouldn't be worried. Next week is going to be tough Tenn has played every team hard and has had some tough losses every game this year. I really hope they win tonight.

ANSWER 1
anyone who understands how serious Brady's injury was and how difficult it is for a quarterback to recover.

ANSWER 2
anyone who watched Peyton Manning play last year, going 3-4 and then 9-0
He was aweful early.

The playcalling on both sides of the ball has me scratching my head.

I don't understand why our CBs are told to play off so far. It never works, ever. It's like a constant prevent defense so instead of giving up one 50 yard play we give up 10 5 yard plays.

It all comes down to missed opportunities. The defense had some problems but they weren't awful and I don't think it's the players fault. Was anybody else reminded of Plaxico Burress single coverage when Marshall got his touchdown?

Tom Brady holds most of the blame for the loss IMO but I'm not about to say he's lost it. 5 weeks into the season is hardly enough time for him to regain his incredible ability. It was a disappointing loss for a game that I thought was very winnable

Brady overthrew Moss badly on the wide open bomb and too high on a needed 2nd half pass. He looked bad on those. But the offense just looks terribly inconsistent and has no creativity. The play calling is astonishingly predictable.

Another thing is there may not be the talent we thought on offense. With no Galloway, we have Same Aiken and Edelman as the 3rd and 4th receivers. That's damn poor work by the front office.

Bottom line, great offenses don't get shut out in the second half by anybody and great defenses don't give up 98 yard scoring drives to Kyle Orton.

Right now, the Pats are above average on both sides of the ball, but nothing more.

Agreed. I'd also add that Manning's injury was way less severe, involving 4 to 6 weeks of rehab. Brady's was 6 to 9 months. So he's going to struggle, and in fact may take longer than Manning did. We don't know.

What we do know is that it's pretty unreasonable to expect Tom Brady to be 100% after only 5 games.

Put down 2 losses for Indy and NO.

12-4 and 11-5 should be enough to get you into the playoffs. Although 11-5 was unlucky for them last year.

It's a long season. We've faced 4 really good teams and 1 bad team. Don't be depressed about 3-2. It could be 4-1, maybe even 5-0, but it could be 1-4 too.

We have Tennessee and TB coming up, 2 teams we should beat. Do that and we are 5-2 going into the bye, which would be great IMO all things considered. The rebuilt defense which was thought to be our achilles heel has not allowed more than 17 points in regulation and just got one of its best players back. They'll only get better. Most importantly, Brady will only get better.

its hard to compare brady and manning's injury. right now in my personal opinion, brady is just a player who hasnt played for 1 full yr and that too a QB. injury or no injury its a lot to get back from. iam not even sure even brady realizes it with his complaining of dropped passes.
And our WR outside of moss and a half fit welker are nothing to scare anyone. look at the good teams right now. colts with garson andco, giants with nicks and steve smith.
the FO has missed out on drafting WR's for a while.i sure hope tate and nunn can be the answers. aiken, galloway dont scare anyone.and above all brady starts to distribute the balllike before instead of just looking for welker all the time.

You know what's freakin depressing, checking Cincinatti's freakin box score and seeing Rey Maualuga lighting up the freakin stat sheet again with 8 tackles (6 solo) and 2 of them for losses.

We passed twice on this guy, STUPIDLY, and settled for guys like Ron Brace and Patrick Chung............

For a team desperate for a Maualuga, Laurinaitis or a Clay Matthews, how the freak did BB do this ? Unbelievable !!!!!!!!!!

How many passes do we give BB before we can actually start to criticize his choices of coordinators, his drafts and his FA decisions and most recently some of these freakin trades (Burgess for a 3 and a 5), I mean c'mon. I'm done being handed the "BB can do no wrong koolaid", the guy is not above criticism.
