I know there has been a ton of Maroney hating on this site, but I think that this stat needs to be posted. It was just posted on Mike Reiss' blog. Of all of Maroney's carries this season 26% of them have been for losses. That clearly says that Maroney isnt getting off the ball and hitting the hole hard enough. It isnt saying he dances too much, its saying he just doesnt get to the hole fast enough. Fred Taylor on the other hand, gets to the hole very fast only has 4% of his carries stopped for losses, Maroney needs to start learning from Taylor how to get off the ball and get to the hole faster.

According to Mike Reiss' blog:
The breakdown of negative runs:

Laurence Maroney -- 7 in 27 attempts
Fred Taylor -- 2 in 45 attempts
Sammy Morris -- 2 in 13 attempts
Kevin Faulk -- 1 in 16 attempts

No, it doesn't say that Maroney isn't getting off the ball and hitting the hole hard enough. It says one thing, and one thing only. It says that Maroney has 7 negative runs in 27 attempts.

And this has been mentioned in other threads.

Then what is the cause for 7 of his 27 carries being for negative yardage?

Lots of things. Blocking failures. not getting to the hole fast enough. Not reading the D. Dancing. mishandling of the handoff...

I was just thinking that we needed another Maroney thread...

Feel free to get the game tapes and watch every one of the 27 carries, even if it's only the TV version of the tapes, since that will at least be something. Then, perhaps, you'll be in a better position to tell us. Here's an example of someone who's apparently taken the time:

One If By Land: Maroney not thriving, but not getting help

You should read the whole thing, and he's not just shining Maroney's shoes. However, this line is probably the reality that people here keep ignoring:

To tally it all up, Maroney had seven carries and was hit at or behind the line of scrimmage in all seven of them.

I'm guessing no one will be able to shine maroney's shoes anytime soon, with you occupying that space in front of him for yourself. Just kiddin man:)

God i hope your right. I want to believe you, and you have plenty of stats and figures that resemble facts to back you up. I will cleanse my memory of all things Maroney for tomorrows game and pray that you are right

Alright, but its the same OL blocking for all of the other backs, and they dont have even as close to as many negative carries as Maroney does. Do they just not like blocking for him?

He is being hit behind the line of scrimmage because he doesnt come off the ball and hit the hole hard enough. Why dont you do some video watching of your own and watch some of Fred Taylors runs and see how hard he comes off the ball and hits the hole.

I'm not sure what you expect me to say here. If a line blocks inconsistently, you get inconsistent results. One only has to go back to the beginning of last season to see a perfect example of this.

Game 1: Morris and Maroney each average better than 5 yards per carry, while Jordan gains only 6 yards on 2 carries and Heath Evans gains 3 yards on 2 carries.

Game 2: Jordan has 11 carries for 62 yards, while Maroney has 8 carries for 16 yards and Morris has 8 carries for 0 yards.

So, did the line hate blocking for Jordan in game one, and then decide to hate blocking for Morris in game 2?

The % of negative yards per overall rushes, is a key stat.

Someone else posted before why it's more important for a back to have low variance of 3.5 yards per rush, rather than have an RB with a higher ypc but much higher variance.

Since you can gain so much through the passing game, what one really wants from the running game are a steady 3, 4, 5 yards every time you run the ball.

Are you really Mrs. Maroney, posing as Deus Irae?

This is a logical fallacy that's been addressed many times now. At this point, if you can't be bothered to read any of the dozen threads that have addressed this point, then FFS at least don't start another new one. Maroney's getting carries at different stages in the game, different down/distance scenarios, and different formations than the other RBs. Trying to draw a direct comparison between Maroney and the other RBs is going to be imprecise just because of that. And even if you do insist on drawing the comparison, Maroney isn't even doing significantly worse than the other RBs- Morris has 3.2 YPC at the moment, and I actually think that he's been pretty decent so far.

Running into your own lineman when there's no hole, ...

Really? Barry Sanders was considered one of the greatest RBs of all time, and he had a huge number of rushes for negative and low yardage, and a huge variance.

I'm not saying that there isn't something in what you say. The Cowboys won 3 SBs with Emmit Smith, a much lower variance runner than Barry Sanders. Being able to move the chains is good. But home run capability is also good, and some negative runs isn't the end of the world.

Re Maroney, obviously 26% negative yardage says that something isn't working, whether it has to do with him, the way he's being used, the blocking he's getting, or some combination of the above.

Its clear that Maroney is not as comfortable running without a lead blocker. Which begs the question, why are we doing that when we were so successful with a lead blocker in 2006 and 2007?

I still think Maroney is our best back right now with Taylor out but with a lead blocker he can be devastating.

I am all for Maroney running with a lead blocker.

Amen to that. Let him follow a blocker and get some holes for a change. The poor guy needs a few good runs to get some confidence back. Running him into a crowd and expecting him to make something out of nothing hasn't worked too well so far this year.

JUST A THOUGHT
If our passing game were playing as well as that of New Orleans, perhaps we too would have 166 rushing yards a game and a 5.0 average (stats as reported by another poster).

To paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld -- you have to run through the holes you have, not the holes you wish you had.
