Pereira assesses roughing the passer penalties in Pats vs. Ravens

Pereira, VP of NFL officiating reviewed the RTP calls on NFLN, says both head contacts that triggered RTP are legit calls because it is much easier to control your arms than legs and there is no excuse for Ngata or Wright.

On the RTP in terms of Brady's knees, he says two things:

1) Officials will err on the side of caution. It is far better for them to have a quick trigger finger on the flag, and absorb criticism than for a team to lose a marquee player or quarterback.

2) Addressing the claim that Brady coerced the flag/is a favorable player to protect, he says that no NFL officials want to be caught doing that because it affects their chances of being able to referee into the playoffs and someday calling the superbowl.

Again those comments come from him, FWIW.

When you make a QB jump because your bulk is headed directly for his knees, it's a borderline call pre-2009, but after seeing Wilfork and AD called for less egregious calls, it's justified.

Excellent segment. I'm glad that Pereira says when people mess up, and says when he agrees with them. I do think there's still an air of 'spin-job' on the whole deal, but I still think it's very good.

It's only "spin-job" because they refuse to listen to reality. Lots of fans hate Brady and the Pats because of their success and will do, say, and believe anything, so long as it makes them feel better.

Perreira said the target area for tackling a QB is below the shoulders and above the knees. But both Wilfork and Rodney have been flagged for hitting too low on the QB after tackling the QB in the thigh area. Rodney's was a few years ago against Bledsoe, and Wilfork has been called twice that I can recall for tackling the QB by wrapping up the thighs. IMO those are reputation calls.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't one of them called a "late hit" while the other one was because he picked him up and slammed him to the ground? I don't think it had anything to do with where they were tackled.

The slamming one was Adalius Thomas. The ones I was talking about they were flagged for hitting too low.

Watching them play that POS diving at Brady's knees over and over just drove home the point for me how valid that call was. He wasn't blocked or tripped into going for Brady's knees.....he launched himself. We are lucky Brady got out of the way....that could have been lights out for another season.

Absolutely. That was an intentional lunge for his knees, and can be clearly seen in the tape.

It wasn't. Look at Brady, hos whole body keeled because of the blow to the head.

Now look at Mike Wright's penalty.

Ngata's was MUCH worse than Wright's.

I don't think the calls were bad...who can blame Brady being that fired up after what he dealt with last year....the problem is the rules commitee has no forsight....they let the rules sit around as is until they lose a big star or a star gets mad...see Manning and illegal contact..(worst rule in football btw)...and so the perception becomes they only do it for these teams or these players...when in reality certain hits should have always been off limits or rules enforced better if they are on the books...and if they don't want to enforce certain rules...get rid of them then.

Thomas was fined, Wilfork was not. However the NFL did not admit the call against Wilfork on the play against Edwards was a mistake. They said something about 'sliding down to Edward's knees' or words to that effect as I recall in an attempt to claim the penalty was the correct call.

This problem will never go away because the calls went the Pats way.

Did anyone notice Eisen running his mouth, Pierara points out that the Ravens also got a call, and Eisen stands there dumbfounded. My guess is the concept of protecting the QB's and penalty calling officials should equal disciplined football in just not computing.

The counter clowns on NFLN are just mirroring ESPN for an audiance.

The Suggs shot is cheap imo and was right to be called.

As a guy who's shot his knees out before seeing players dive at standing legs at knee height is cheap, nothing else.

The Wright and Ngata head shots, I'm all for those, rough the QB up as much as you can.

Wilfork imo started at a decent height so Edwards had the chance to brace himself/ If Brady hadn't jumped Suggs could have cause real damage

As a guy who grew up watching football but playing rugby I have never understood the way defensive backs tackle by throwing themselves at knees

It does not help Flacco when other teams know in advance that Suggs and Lewis etc. WILL go out of their way to injure (not tackle) your QB.
