How weird would it be to see Merriman roaming around in a flying Elvis...

Defense on notice: Jobs are on the line - SignOnSanDiego.com

Asked Wednesday about possible lineup changes, Turner said, “We know we need to get better, and we're going to do what we have to do to be better.”

That might include additions to the roster by the Oct. 20 trading deadline.

Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith would not comment Wednesday, but he is spending time on the phone with other general managers. Smith has a history of adding high-profile help where his team needs it at the deadline.

He's not the same player since being caught using steroids.....so no he can stay out West.

The San Diego Strangler? No thanks.

I don't want Merriman on this team. The guy just hasn't been the All-World LB he was when he was on the 'roids. It could be the injuries, but he wasn't all that great in 2007 either. Let someone else overpay for the overrated celebrity.

That's not true at all, he's still put up big numbers after getting caught, I would still be weary of trading for him though, because of his knee.

Yeah. If it's not the roids, it's the injuries. Either way, that would keep me away from him. On top of that, the guy is injured again. He was only used sparingly against Pittsburgh. No thanks. I don't think I want to pay top dollar to bring that to Foxboro, and neither would the women of Boston.

No. Who do they have that we would want?

SD's defense has stunk. 497 yards to Pittsburgh. Can't stop the run or the pass. Our secondary has been fine, don't need DBs. Merriman doesn't look right, and generated no pressure against the Steelers. I can't really think of anyone to go after.

Ok, but I wasn't posting just to mention The Swan, is there anyone else on that team that could interest us?

I wouldn't mind seeing Quentin Jammer rock a Flying Elvis. Same thing with Cromartie if he can get over his hip issue and flash his 2007 stuff...

I wouldn't mess with our secondary right now.

DL: Williams is old and on IR. Casillas is a good player in the Ty Warren mold, but our DL is solid.

LB: Merriman's been discussed. English hasn't proven anything and hasn't looked special. Phillips is good, but I don't see enough to justify overspending.

CB: Cromartie hasn't done much since 2007. I'll keep Bodden over Jammer anyway. I'd be happy to trade James Sanders even up for Eric Weddle, though. :D

I was thinking of a CB corps of Jammer, Bodden, Springs, and Wilhite/Butler depending on the package. That would own.

Merriman has a total of 197 tackles for his career, Mayo last year alone had 129. Merriman has good sack numbers 39. Since the knee injury and the steroids his production has gone way down.

That might actually cause a new set of rules about fairness to be created...

Losing Jamaal Williams has a lot to do with their struggles.

I can just see Polian making a new rule that all of the Pats' cornerbacks must be made wear 50 lb. weights on their ankles during games to "make it fair".

If I was BB I would kick the tires on Castillo, Cromartie, and English.

Here's a nice little brakdown of their defensive woes from Lombardi:

Diner morning news: family feud in San Diego | National Football Post
Injuries have really hurt the Chargers, and they’re not the same front they were three years ago. It’s so clear on tape. Three years ago, a two-yard run was a great run as the Chargers could win most one-on-one matchups in their front seven. Yes, Smith is right. They were much more physical, but is the reason for their lack of physical play their will, or their talent? I would say their talent. One-time backup DE Jacques Cesaire is now a starter, Jamal Williams is older and gone, Igor Olshansky became a shell of himself last year, and now he’s gone. Luis Castillo doesn’t appear to be the same player, and none of their backers, including Merriman, is playing well right now. Add in the fact that safety Eric Waddle misses too many tackles and it’s clear why teams can run the ball on the Chargers.

Ok, but I wasn't posting just to mention The Swan, is there anyone else on that team that could interest us?

He's looking to add not subtract, although Merriman could be the bait since they won't re-sign him and he can't stay on the field or create impact lately.

The big change will be when Norv goes, though if AJ remains they will continue to draft some talent that underperforms. It's an institutional mindset in SD. AJ is one of those GM's who like to make the case that talent evaluators are the true geniuses in football...creates an atmosphere where everyone thinks talent is the be all and end all so they develop an attitude of I am therefore we will. So far they ain't and the window on this era is closing on SD at a time when they're hard pressed for $$$ and desperate for a new stadium and their owner is battling Alzheimers. That's just too much to tackle and overcome.

I don't understand. AJ Smith wants to get better on defense, so we should trade him players that will improve our defense and take in return players that are part of San Diego's suck defense.

Most particularly I do not want Merriman. Since he stopped taking steroids his numbers have been nothing like they were, and he can only go downhill with his injuries.

They can keep babyLT, too.

I would take Jammer and I'd maybe take another look at Larry English but as said earlier he's not exactly flying yet

Merriman simply not worth the contract money

How about Norv for OC? :horn:
