This was a classic Belichick move--cunning and very slippery. BB signed Burgess to make him believe he could make the team, yet BB knew all along he would be here for only ONE week to tell the Pats everything he knew about the Ravens schemes for the upcoming game. Pats win and the defense excels at several key moments.

Since Burgess never made the Pats active roster, Pats get their 7th round pick back. If I'm wrong, someone correct me.

I'm not sure that is the case, if the fact that he did NOT play in a game in a game WAS the condition. I would think with all trades like this for late round picks, there's conditions, but I do not think there is a hard and fast rule about that. It's likely that that IS the case. He was ON the Patriot's roster for one week then cut, then signed to the Practice Squad. I am not sure if it mattered whether he was active and DNP, active and played or inactive during his week with the Patriots 53. I would hope that they made conditions about him playing x amount of games or something for that pick. I do think they liked him and would have kept him on the PSquad if Ayanbadajo had not been hurt and taken back.

Apparently that tried to claim him off waivers before he cleared, but there is a rule that says a team cannot claim a player or sign them from a PS if they are playing that team that week... So they had to wait until after the game was over.

He might come in a little bit of handy if we run into the Ravens again in the postseason depending on how much of our playbook/tendencies he was able to absorb in a one week period.

You learn something new every day - I didn't know teams could up and sign guys off other teams' practice squads. Course I suppose the union insisted on that so guys couldn't be forced to turn down opportunities to get onto a regular roster.

They can opt not be signed. They're not being claimed; they're being signed. If Burgess wanted to stay on the Pats' practice squad he could have.

That is good news..and what I expected...as I did not think he was around long enough to warrant a 7th.
In a general sense, maybe some who know more details can say more about what conditions usually are...or can be. I know that is wide open..but might it be x anount of games played in or time on the roster?? Just curious about these sort of conditional moves.
Obviously some have NO conditions...Alex Smith for example..I am sure other trades have a lot of conditions...maybe preseason, making the roster or number of games.

Our playbook is four inch high.. a mite difficult to absorb all that in one week.

I agree..but curious as to usually what it is for low round picks in the season...what the norm usually is..Maybe this is one Reiss can ask and comment on.

I don't think this is what happened... the Pats would have just released him if that was the case.

We signed him to our PS because we thought he could develop into a player we could use later and avoid having to give the Ravens a 7th round pick for him.

The Ravens had a LB go on IR and signed him back. I think we wanted him, but not enough to keep him on the 53 man roster and give up a pick for him.

And this wasn't retribution by the Ravens for the loss, since they tried to get him back before the game, but the rules wouldn't allow them to.

Maybe some posters that have played pro or college can answer this question for me. What could BB really gain by "picking his brain" in preperation of the Ravens game? BB should already have an idea of what they do defensively scheme wise and what their tendencies are from watching film. The only thing that I think could be gained is knowing a defenses audibles and code words. But I would think that these change fairly regularly due to tatics like this being employed around the league.
