I couldn't tell if Chung got in the game yesterday after Sanders left, but I'm assuming he did. Did he show anything positive? was he lost? Any noticeable improvements from preseason?

I know Rice slashing us up around the time that Sanders left, was it related to Chung's play?

It seems like the hype on this kid fell flat after he looked somewhat clueless before the season started, but do people think he's still capable of making an impact as the season goes on?

He is 4 games into his rookie year. Let's not overreact. Merriweather didn't get much playing time his first year either, and when he did he looked like a rookie most of the time.

Rodney Harrison was playing specials teams as a rookie, so it ain't where you start out in this league, it is where you end up.

I don't think I was reacting at all, I'm just wondering what some of the Xs and Os guys thought of his play and if he showed any improvements.

That 50 yarder was result of missed tackle by Sanders. I saw plenty of Chung yesterday though.....on sideline cheering. :D

He came in when Sanders went out with the late game injury.

Nantz, in fact, pointedly mentioned it.

Meriweather didn't start to get involved in the defense till later in his rookie year. It's a very complex system so I think we have to be patient with Chung. Besides, with McGowan and Sanders ahead of him, there's not many snaps available for the rookie. This may change though once he becomes familiar with the system or at the latest by the start of next season.

So nobody has any specific observations on his play?

I'm not sure how my OP is being interpreted as "OMG Chung sucks and will never contribute."

I don't think Sanders was out very long so it's kind of moot. I fully expect Meriweather and Chung to be the starters this time next year with McGowan playing his current 3rd safety role and Sanders being a damn good backup.

I couldn't watch the game yesterday but watching highlights and saw the Bodden Interception he looked in good position

NFL Videos: Leigh Bodden INT

Chung came in when Sanders got hurt, but no, I can't specifically remember anything that he did. All in all, I think that McGowan's emergence has pushed him out of the picture for now, which is a good thing long-term.

I was just answering the part of "I couldn't tell if Chung got in the game yesterday after Sanders left, but I'm assuming he did....."

The unknowable for me: how much of Chung's limited role is on Chung, and how much on Brandon McGowan? That's a surprisingly deep position right now, given that at the start of free agency Meriweather was the only safety on the roster.

At the risk of getting hammered by everyone who will say that it's way to early to make these kinds of evaluations, I'd say that Belichick's career batting average of around .500 for second-round draft picks is not going to change after this year's class.

I was responding more to the "Chung will be fine, it takes everyone time to develop, don't overreact" sentiment.

Gotcha.

Saw him out there. Didn't notice any of his play other than I think I saw #25 scrambling around for the fumble on the opeining kickoff play with MacGowan.

But FWIW, I agree with the folks favorably comparing him to Merriwether's first 4 games of his rookie year.

That's good to hear. Safety has to be the most complicated position to learn after QB, I think as long as there is any noticeable progress it's good news.

If you listen to Jets fans, they still think Merriweather is a bust since he didn't fly out of the gates his rookie year, which I just don't understand at all.

I think flashes of potential are all you want to see early on.

Looks like Chung is ALWAYS the first to the ball carrier on kick off and punts, love his hustle, we cant expect anything on defense from him this early. That's like saying Butler is a flop...not counting his two great play yesterday. Chung will be a star, the coaches love him.

No idea how you got this. Guyton was 1 on 1 with the RB and blew it. What you saw was him running by sanders after guyton missed the coverage.

Its sanders who locks down when others mess up in the front 7 and bad for guyton he was helping the CB with mason.

I didn't see Chung do much so far this year in his limited reps on the regular defense. HOWEVER, he didn't do anything terrible either, which is fine for a rookie.

I am fine with Chung taking time to develop. There is no current need given that we have Meriweather, McGowan and Sanders getting all the reps.

As expected on draft day, Chung is a solid special teamer. While it is not important for him to contribute as a rookie, it is great to see him contributing.
