Rodney Was Joking About His "Skirt Comment"

Brady's answer to Rodney's remark on Dennis & Callahan on WEEI this morning went something like this... Well, Rodney led the league in personal fouls'. Now the perpetually offended thin skinned' readers will take that as a fued, but Brady also commented that he and Rodney were like brothers. He then went on to say that densive players have their views but QBs have to stand there unprotected. Said Suggs barely touched him but refs need to call the rule and not impute intyent.

EDIT: Something's WRONG on Ian's Wayback machine as my posts instead of appearing last get back dated and posted 'earlier'

Oh come on, who could not tell that was a joke? People are way too uptight.

As long as Rodney and Brady have an understanding about what really happened, that's all that really matters! Brady even was laughed about it on WEE this morning also, and said there is nothing that Rodney could ever say that could ever bother him.

It's not the joke itself that got people mad. It's the fact that Rodney said it was a bad call. Not only do I disagree with him, I think he was piling on as every commentator was taking the Ravens side and not one said it was the correct call. If Harrison is going to throw his opinions around, as is his right, we also have the right to call him on it if we disagree.

This morning Skip Bayless said that Ray Lewis should take off the skirt. Strange times when I agree with Bayless more than Rodney.

Yes, QBs ARE overprotected. It must rankle on defensive players. However, the NFL is a business. Guys like Brady and Manning attract eyeballs. Without them, the entertainment value is less. Ya gotta remember that the QB's job description calls for him to stand there defenseless and exposed while the defenders prepare to bring the hit stick.

Oh, I know why they are doing it. I just hope that they turn that rule around when Brady retires. ;)

I'm sayin nuthin 'cause PATSNUTME told Rodney where I live

Ian, good thread to enlighten the non-sports players and humor impaired

Eh, even if he wasn't joking, what he said should be taken in stride. He does have a point about the QBs being way too overprotected. It was almost hilarious to watch some of the very same people who defended him before by saying, "It's about time we have someone in the media who calls it like it is!" turn on him like a pack of rabid wolves when he said something (albeit in jest) remotely bad about the Pats.

Rodney has always been supportive of the Pats, and has shown his sense of humor over the years, so I am amazed anybody has needs clarification on this. The guy who has often complained of "disrespect" to the Pats now has to explain he is joking when he makes a comment directed at the Pats? Get a grip.

And thank you Ian for stepping on this issue quickly. Good grief.

I can't believe no one here remembers Rodney Harrison. Even when he was a Patriot, he often said the NFL put skirts on QBs. He wasn't joking then. This is something he truly believes. The only difference this time is that he named Brady instead of lumping him in with all QBs.

Joking doesn't make it right. I worked too long with people who used "I was only joking" as an excuse for vicious remarks and slurs.

Ex-Patriot or not, this is what Rodney believes. He is entitled to his belief but he is dead wrong about hitting QBs who cannot defend themselves. Ask Rodney what he thinks about WRs going at his knees and you will get an entirely different response, because it happened to him. It was a legal hit by Wade and Rodney spoke out against it. Ask him (or Ray Lewis) about chop blocks. Oh, no, can't have that. THEY could get hurt. But they are fine with putting QBs out for the season.

Total hypocritical BS.

It isn't about Brady, it is about being cowardly. Okay for Pollard to do, but not Boby Wade.

I agree 100%. Harrison even mentioned the fact that QB's were paid more than anyone else so they should be fair game. Imagine the league without Brady, Manning, Brees, Big Ben etc.

Very poor taste on Harrisons part to call Brady out like that.

They played Rodney's statements on D&C for Brady. He was laughing and said that Rodney was one of the most fined players in the NFL for hits on QBs, so you know where he's coming from, or words to that effect. He didn't sound mad. Then he went on to say that the reason he left the field for a minute after his TD sneak was because his knee brace broke in half when he slid and he had to get a new one.

Let's move on to Denver! Rodney was hired to be a pistol on Football Night in America, and obviously, he's doing his job well. I agree he and Ray Lewis think QBs should be fair game. Lucky for Brady and us fans that they NFL and the refs don't agree.

Between Rodney's play as a Patriot, and the loyalty he's shown to the team since he retired, he can just about do or say no wrong in my eyes.
The only thing as bad as knee-jerk reactors crying for his head are knee-jerk reactors saying there is nothing in the world he can do wrong.

There is actually no difference between your attitude and the attitude of those you decry. The only difference is which side of the mud pit you are standing in.

Harrison's comments were wrong. It was the wrong message and was not respectful on national TV to a former team mate.

The fact that it might have been an inside joke (or might be damage control - you cannot know) doesn't make it okay. The fact is that the skirt comment has been used by Rodney before, just not in reference to Brady, so joke or not, it is what Rodney truly believes.

If you can break out of the Pats hype blindness (from either side of the mud pit) for a minute, you can see that his comments about protecting QBs in general match Ray Lewis's and are simply wrong.

In my mind they are cowardly, as they complain about not being able to freely hit players not in a position to defend themselves. Rodney had a different viewpoint about the Wade hit.

Sorry. I love Harrison. He is one of my favorite all-time Pats. But he is simply totally wrong in his stance on protecting QBs. Get out of your he-was-a-patriot-and-now-he-can-do-no-wrong simplistic viewpoint and you might see Rodney and Ray Lewis have the same viewpoint and that it is wrong.

I don't think there were many people on this board that believed he actually meant what he said.

Part of his point is the way they allow other positions to have certain things done to them, that they won't allow being done to the QB position.

Two different things: the skirt comment as a joke, and his stance on the NFL's protection of QBs.

I can't see how anyone can complain now when this was a set-up and Brady was laughing about it beforehand.

Who said Americans have no sense of humour....;) He obviously thinks QB's are overprotected because he's openly said so, hence the sarcasm to an ex team mate.

Brady probrably got it in the locker room too, doesn't mean they aren't little buddies anymore now does it....

My guess is that Rodney probably didn't realize the other "pundits" and "pundits" in general, were that dumb. Also, he has been consistent with his opinion.

However, in a league with rules against tripping, crack back blocks, leg whips,..... the thought that defensive players are out there blind and naked is a little far fetched.

Besides where was Ray-Ray and T suckle after week one defending Vince and AD? Why didn't they complain about Wright's call?

The same reason why Rodney cried about Bobby Wade for 7 and 1/2 months.

Hypocracy is a human condition.

The joke was funny, and I'm not "angry" or "upset" at Rodney at all. It was hypocritical, however. It is what it is.

A joke can be funny and not mean at all, and still be hypocritical at the same time. John Candy made lots of great cracks about fat women.
