The only call that went against the Ravens that I didn't really understand was the intentional grounding call on Flacco. I must not understand the rule entirely, because I thought that once you're out of the pocket, which he clearly was, he could chuck it away, which he did. Someone might have to enlighten me on that. Aside from that, nothing stood out to me as a bad call.

The ball has to reach the line of scrimmage for intentional grounding not to be called.

In one of the Ravens player rants (Lewis?), there was a reference to this game being like the 2007 game in that the Pats were given an advantage by the refs. Interesting to note how much a past game seems to weigh on the Ravens' minds, and how they create a perception of unfairness as a way to avoid full responsibility for losing the game(s).

It always provides an advantage when your opponent feels like a victim of unfairness. It distracts them and creates an unconscious expectation that it will happen again, which becomes self-fulfilling. I hope they keep it up.

I posted this in the other thread. Might as well put it here too...

I'm pretty sick of hearing about the officiating costing Baltimore the game. Number one, those bad calls went both ways. Baltimore did get the shaft on the first Ngata roughing penalty, but we got the shaft on the Wright roughing penalty. All even from there. Number two, I wasn't aware that Joe Flacco throwing a key interception at the end of the first half was a penalty. Blame their loss on THAT and quit crying about the officiating which was horrible to both teams.

On top of that, I couldn't sleep well last night and fired up the DVR for the NFL Network "Classic Games" re-airing of the 2007 game. Ravens fans should blame Rex Ryan for that loss and not the refs. If not for fat ass, they would have won that game. Those penalties were called for a reason as Moss was taken down by Rolle and Watson was held in the end zone. If you cannot see that those two penalties were called for a damn good reason then you need glasses. Pure and simple.

Yesterday, the officiating was much worse than in the 2007 game. That Ngata roughing call was terrible. The Suggs call was deserved. However, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. They got the Ngata call, we got the Wright call. Both teams were beneficiaries of terrible flags.

I think I understand your point, but the fact is, those infractions get called EVERY TIME. We can take issue with the rule being so strict - no contact whatsoever with the QB's helmet - but it is what it is, and it's an automatic penalty. I don't see either as "getting the shaft."

I do. If your hand can't even so much as brush up against the quarterback's helmet then what the hell is the point of playing defense?

That team really plays hard and they've got lots of talented people on both sides of the ball. But, the habit they have of blaming the officials every time they lose a game is really getting tiresome, at least to me. Sure, the officiating was lousy, but as we all saw the Patriots had some poor calls go against them, as well. On "Mangirl and Meatball" (aka "Mike and Mike") today, Mangirl's comments about the game centered upon the poor officiating in favor of the Patriots and Brady. Then Meatball gave a passionate editorial on the ridiculousness of the hand/helmut roughing the passer calls (and, he's right) giving the impression that those were the type of phony calls from which Brady was the beneficiary (false). The fact that Wright's penalty was exactly the type described by Meatball was never mentioned - in fact Wright's penalty itself wasn't mentioned leading one to assume that the only roughing flags were called on the Ravens.

I think Lewis was mostly just compaining about the rules and how they are called from a defensive player's perspective. Ie. the rules are dumb, go too far in protecting the QB, are subjectively called by the refs in a way that again goes too far in protecting the Qb, and it is difficult being a defensive player with all of these stupid rules that favor the offense.

He would have gained more sympathy from me however, if he mentioned that all of these stupid rules/officiating calls affect everyone, not just the Ravens. Because he didn't make that distinction, it sounds like he thinks the officials favor the Patriots or that the disfavor the Ravens.

In 2007, the Ravens would have stopped the Pats twice on fourth down to win the game, but 1) Rex called timeout before the snap on one play and 2) a Pats OL (Hochstein?) had a false start on the other. The officials had no choice but to make those calls.

Jabar Gaffney caught the winning TD, got both feet down, and spun the ball in his hands, showing control of the football. Bart Scott then went apes#!t, actually picking up the flag and throwing it. Come on: a ref has to call that.

Really, Baltimore: the calls were correct, and it was two years ago. It's not like that game kept you out of the playoffs. Your team sucked anyway. Let it go.

The reason why these guys don't know about the Wright call is that they didn't watch the game, and that's why Baltimore keeps complaining. If you complain, you're the squeaky wheel, and people notice, and now the networks will all run tape of Ngata's hand glancing off Brady's mask, and then the morons like Mike and Mike will feel qualified to comment, though of course they didn't bother to watch the game, because if they did they would realize how sad the commentary they put out this morning really is.

Even in Reiss's article, or in Ryan's this morning, the two writers seemed to agree with Lewis's presentation of the facts, that the roughing calls continued Patriot drives that should be three and outs. But only one of those calls kept the drive alive.

That show should have a disclaimer coming in and out of every commercial break. Those talentless buffoons are just plain bad for your mental health.

Yup...

Another "Leadership by Example" moment.

The Ravens deserved every call they got. What's amazing is how FEW calls were made against them. That game featured as huge amount of cheap shots and post-play hitting that were never flagged.

The worst part is this morning when their fans and other Patriots-haters are all over the net complaining about the officiating and how they were robbed and jobbed by the refs.

Raven, thy name is hypocrite...

Yep. From their comments it was clear they came into the game convinced they were going to be on the short end of the calls. Not surprising then that they found out they were right.

To jump to the defense of the Ravens players. I have to say that I did not hear anyone actually blame the lose on the penalty calls. Ray Lewis (who I am not a fan of) states that they lost the game regardless of calls. He does go on and claim that the officiating was poor. I think it was a fair opinion myself.

That is the exact reason why I stopped watching those two losers. Greenberg only talks about how great the Jets are and when they lose he doesn't even mention the jets. Every show they talk negatively about the Patriots. Golic isn't too bad and mostly just agrees with Greeny the whole time, but greeny is a whiny little new york b*tch

The throw has to be either near a receiver or reach the LOS. Flacco's lefty flip didn't do either. I do give him points for creativity though. And at that point, he really didn't have anything to lose.

Oh, ok. I thought it went out of bounds. Clearly, I must have not been paying close enough attention at the time. Thanks for the clarification.

It did go out of bounds but didn't reach the line of scrimmage. If a QB is under pressure outside the pocket, his throw must be near a receiver or make it to the line of scrimmage. He can throw it out of bounds, out of the end zone, into the turf, whatever. It just can't be short of the LOS.
