WEEI.com: McGowan Quickly Becoming Big Hit With Pats

What is an impact player, by your definition?

Tell me how Sanders is bringing down the defense, since you seem to have diagnosed his massive suckitude.

I think BB does see value in him on STs and knowing the D and all, but in 58 games w/ 36 starts, he has 1 sack, 5 INTs, 3 fumble recoveries and 1 forced fumble. Thats not enough if you goal is to have playmakers in the defensive backfield.

Don't even bother. Some people can't be reasoned with on certain players -- like the claim that Ryan Clark has so much more of an impact player, despite having made around the same number of impact plays over a longer career.

Just don't even bother.

I think BB prefers a player who doesn't make any mistakes and doesn't make any flashy plays over a player who makes flashy plays but mistakes. After all Sanders is the last line in our D, and that is the last place you want mistakes.

agree 100%. However in the short time I have seen McGowen play, he is much more of a physical presence back there. BB does put a ton of value in that to be sure..

Hey now, someone else who watches the same Patriot games I do!:p

The irony of this is funny.:D

I've said since Day 1 of TC that this D needs a hit stick back there. Merriweather could evolve in to that type of player, but I always knew Sanders wasn't. Doesnt mean his a bad player, just not that type of one.

Never said he was a bad player though. He's a good backup and a Special Teams ace, but he doesn't make enough plays or is not a physical presence.

I was arguing with these same guys about him in another thread, and I pointed out Ryan Clark of the Steelers. Clark may not have the gaudy statistics, but the guy is a physical presence and McGowan, in the short time he's been with us, has shown that he is of the same mold.

"I really don’t care about my body. I just try to go out and make plays," said the solidly built 5-foot-11, 210-pound McGowan, who calls his style of play "reckless."

This sounds like Polamalu and Bob Sanders, I guess that's why they're always injured.

Great news. Sanders is finally where he belongs: a special teams ace and backup Safety. McGowan's only 26 so if Chung doesn't step up, McGowan could lockup that position for the forseeable future. It's interesting to note that it took only 1 game before he took Sander's starting position and it took him only one game to make an impact play, whereas we've been waiting forever for Sanders to make any type of impact play.

You are soooooooooooooo right my friend. So right! The moments between a big play by Sanders are far and few in between. I'm not saying he's bad, but if McGowan steps up and surpasses him, there won't be any sleep lost here. I think we can all agree that our safety depth is better than we thought.

I wonder if, for right now, McGowan primarily functions in the nickel and dime unless he surpasses Sanders on the depth chart. That includes being mistake free.
