WEEI.com: McGowan Quickly Becoming Big Hit With Pats

Interesting that McGowan is playing well enough to take away some playing time from Sanders, who was considered to be the leader of the secondary with Harrison retired.

McGowan's skill-set is a lot closer to Rodney's than Sanders', but I still think James is an important player on this D. He historically cleans up a lot of messes for the front 7.

Sanders wont hurt you but the fact is the guy doesnt make game-changing, impact plays.

BB had to do something...

“I really don’t care about my body. I just try to go out and make plays,” said the solidly built 5-foot-11, 210-pound McGowan, who calls his style of play “reckless.”

Yeesh. Good thing he's young.

I'm embarrassed to say I almost expected him to be cut at the end of training camp. I'm glad they didn't. He's progressed a lot in the last few weeks which is great.

But I was also hoping Chung would have emerged a little more by now. Oh well, it's a complex defense. I'm hoping it's just a matter of time for Chung.

I did too. However he did have a nice year with the Bears in 07 which showed that he could be productive.

I need to back-pedal a little on Sanders. Looks like he played as much as McGowan (30+ snaps). Not sure if its accurate that he has taken Sanders' spot as the starting safety.

Well, on BMx2's forced fumble, Sanders recovered, so they're definitely playing in there together at times, anyway.

Yea. My assumption is that McGowen is officially part of the "big nickel" package (3 safetys)

McGowan, as a vet, was bound to get more playing time then chung....who, since we seem to now have 3 starting caliber safeties, really doesnt need to come in, since we dont need him

only way chung plays now is b/c of an injury.....i dont see him beating out any of these three guys, not as a rookie

if we see him with a couple of plays to rest the other guys, itll be on teh second half of the season

Chung will get time in the playoffs when the obligatory broken arm of a safety occurs.

What's better than a vicious safety with a cast?

Great news. Sanders is finally where he belongs: a special teams ace and backup Safety. McGowan's only 26 so if Chung doesn't step up, McGowan could lockup that position for the forseeable future. It's interesting to note that it took only 1 game before he took Sander's starting position and it took him only one game to make an impact play, whereas we've been waiting forever for Sanders to make any type of impact play.

Great analysis...

Falcons Game
Reiss said:
S James Sanders -- 30 of 46 = 65%
S Brandon McGowan -- 33 of 46 = 72%

Bills Game
S James Sanders -- 38 of 54 = 70%
S Brandon McGowan -- 18 of 54 = 33%

He's taking someone's snaps, but it doesn't seem to be Sanders'

Exactly.

The difference between game 1 and game 3?

The answer is #51.

They're playing big nickel. Regardless, let's just keep living in fantasy land where James Sanders makes impact plays.;)

It's more an indication of how much 4-2-5 and 4-1-6,they are using.

I guess I missed the part where they didn't extend his contract and where he lost all his playing time...

They extended his contract! Yaayyy! I guess that's a guarantee that he's an impact player irrespective of what we see on Sundays. Pats never make a mistake. Good logic.:D

What is an impact player, by your definition?

Tell me how Sanders is bringing down the defense, since you seem to have diagnosed his massive suckitude.
