Scout.com reports that the Pats are scheduled to work out former UCLA DE/OLB Bruce Davis, who was a third round draft pick of the Steelers in 2008:

Scout.com: Terdell Sands Profile

"In other team news, the Patriots are expected to work out free-agent DE/OLB Bruce Davis on Tuesday, a league source told Scout.com. Davis, who was third-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008, was waived by Pittsburgh on September 5. Davis had workouts for the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts recently and scouts say he fits in more at defensive end than at outside linebacker."

Hm. Depth exploration, or are they not getting what they want from someone on the roster?

I liked him coming out of UCLA, and I remember some members on the board did, too.

There was another 3rd rounder who couldn't make it in Pittsburgh...

The name will come to me....

You don't get those crazy Vrabel-esque returns on recovery projects too often. That said, it seems like we hit on at least one with Brandon McGowan.

Based on his combine #s, I don't think that even the physical skills are there, either. And 19 reps @ 225 for a DE/OLB? Fuhgeddaboudit.

Yep, I too really liked him coming out of college. He had great sack numers and is a high motor guy. I don't hink he offers much in the way of setting the edge for the run, but as a situational guy he might work. Nobody else on this roster is flying off the edge.

What he said .................... :yeahthat:

I don't know if I would call McGowan a "recovery" project. He was a UDFA with the Bears and never had a standout year before this (2007 maybe?). He probably one stuck around with the Bears for so long because he was always injured.

Had a complete Draft-Crush on this kid. The fact that he came into the league as a one dimensional player, doesn't surprise me that he couldn't hang with a team that has multi-dimensional players across the defensive line. I think he would fit better in Philly because he can get up field and pressure the QB. Since I relate him to Derrick Burgess, I think that if Burgess doesn't make it with the Pats, Bruce doesn't have a chance.

Bruce Davis is 6" 3" 252 per the steeler home page

I don't see how it can be bad to have a look see. We might just be in the market for an young OLB for the future. After all, Prescott Burgess was on the team as of yesterday. I think Lockett is still on the team. We have plenty of roster space for an additional developmental prospect or two or three.

True and true.

What makes you wonder is 3rd rounder to out in a year. I mean Cowher personally said Vrabel would be a starter somewher, but not there. Vrabes certainly was well though of and they let him go kind of as a courtesy cause there was no way to crack the lineup.

It's a fresh start, but you have to wonder if he was a big flop, or problem child. We certainly have more room to groom a LB that will work and play teams. We will need some of these guys to convert to actual LBs, there just isn't room for that many sub package rush specialists.

6,3 252lbs 19 reps at 225 (4.78) 40 time

not big and strong a nuff to play DE

and to slow to play LB

The Steelers never make draft mistakes, and the same goes for the Colts.
