Consider this article by Reiss:

Mike Reiss' blog - Galloway still learning Patriots' offense - ESPN Boston

Where he discusses how it takes quite some time to fit into the Patriot's system.

Now my issue with this is Galloway is 37 years old. Just how much time do you give him to fit in a system until he decides to hang up his cleats?

Compare this with Terrence Nunn and/or Brandon Tate, both of who would probably take some time to fit into the system, but who have their entire career ahead of them.

No

Cut him this week please. Or at least move him down the depth chart. He has great #'s vs my Falcons.

But...yeah...37 is pretty ancient for anyone but a kicker. This has got to be his last year?

He has played an average of 13 games a year since 1995, and is reportedly still one of the fastest guys in the NFL. Right now, he is trying to adapt to an offense that specializes in timing patterns and precise route running. Fans are pining away for Gaffney (I didn't want to see him go either), but Gaffney had no more than 3 receptions in his first 7 regular season games with the Pats and then came up big in the playoffs. It takes time to adjust to this offense. Galloway has more pure ability than Gaffney even at his age, the question is can he adjust his skills to this system. I'm not writing him off after game 2.

Too early to say, let's give it a few more games.

Galloway's biggest strength is his speed. How many times has a ball been thrown his way more than ten yards past the line of scrimmage? Off the top of my head I can only think of one.

Regarding Galloway's age, that won't be an issue until he either slows down or injuries becoame a problem. He's still just as fast, so cross that off. And though he did have injury problems in training camp and early season for Tampa Bay last year, reports are that it was simply Antonio Bryant having a great year with them in '08 and Galloway got left on the bench; they never used a 3-WR set and in their offense under Gruden the second WR was expected to primarily run block and be a short-route, move-the-chains, possession receiver.

In other words it's up to the Pats coaching staff how they use him. If they want to get the most out of him, send him downfield - if nothing else, to clear room for others underneath. But if they're just going to use him on five-yard crossing routes, then they may as well get someone else in there.

Never understood the signing when they could've signed Devery Henderson for the same amount of money and who averages over 20 yards a catch. It's bizarre how he didn't get any attention this off-season.

Joey Galloway = Donald Hayes :ugh:

i think they should have stuck with greg lewis.

I would rather see Maroney running in the flat than Galloway going long. Actually, I am still intrigued with Maroney as a WR (part-time). We have Moss going long ... 2 guys going long makes no sense.

I reckon plenty of people will be looking foolish in a few weeks time.

Galloway is a talented vereran WR - there are plenty of issues on offense that are bigger than his early struggles - Brady's confidence/timing and the general playcalling.

I guess its symptomatic of a FF generation, one from a Patriots point of view that has been horribly spoilt, that expect results...and they want them NOW d%#*!@t!

There is still plenty of chemistry to be worked on, of course and Brady has his own issues at this point - Gaffney had a supremely confident QB throwing him the ball.

Galloway is a game breaker and he'll prove this consistently by the end of the year.

The issue is that if Galloway was fresh out of college, nobody would be expecting instant results from him.

However, at the age he is at now, and what with his being a veteran, the window for "fitting in" is very narrow. You just about have to start producing immediately.

Yeah ... like Edelman does not seem to be having a problem.

Absolutely it is worth it to stick with Galloway. He's the only receiver besides Moss on the roster who can threaten the defense vertically. If Galloway can make a couple of big plays this season, it will prevent the safety(s) from shading to Moss on every play. Galloway deserves more than 2 games before he's written off as a bad fit, too old, a bust, or anything else. Edelman, although a rookie who was playing QB last year, also has had his struggles: he was targeted 16 times last week and came away with 8 catches. That's not exactly lighting the world on fire when everything is a short or intermediate route. I think both Joey and Julian deserve more time to adapt. If we don't give it to them, who do we plug in? Unless the Patriots want to bring in Reche Caldwell, their are no WR's familiar with the Patriots offense that are available right now.

Even when you include Galloway's stats from last year - next to zero, due to injury/Gruden's doghouse/Bryant's success/Bucs gameplan, - he still looks like a better option than Henderson. Here's the three-year average for both players

Galloway: 44 receptions for 736 yards and 4 TD; 16.7 ypc
Henderson: 28 receptions for 649 yards and 4 TD; 23.2 ypc

Throw out 2008 and here are the averages for the previous three seasons:
Galloway: 71 receptions for 1150 yards and 8 TD
Henderson: 25 receptions for 496 yards and 4 TD

Now consider Henderson had Drew Brees and a pass-oriented offense, while Galloway had Jeff Garcia and Brian Griese throwing to him in a ball-control, win-with-defense scheme.

If Galloway was no longer as fast as he has been, then there would be an issue. But that's not the case, so I'm going to wait and see.

Galloway isn't meant to be a long-term solution, just like Stallworth was not. I'd rather roll the dice with Galloway than Henderson.

I don't agree.

Galaloway has spent many years in a whole other system - time has to be spent unlearning what he did at Tampa.

WR is such an instinctive position, especially with the Patriots who rely on their WR's to see the same thing as Brady and make the relevant alterations.

It should be noted that Brady under threw Galloway badly against the Jets when he had the CB beat - and he also had the ball thrown at his feet on more than one occasion.

He has started producing immediately, you are just being a bit narrow as to what production you wish to recognize.

-- Galloway has been on the field for 136 of 158 reps in two games (there's production there).

-- Galloway's got 5 rec averaging 10.6 yds/rec.

-- Moss has 16 rec averaging 10.3 yds/rec.

-- Galloway, the #3 WR has 1/3 of the production as the #1 WR.

-- 2007: Moss had 98 rec.

-- 2007: Gaffney had 36 rec.

-- 2007: Gaffney the #3 WR had 1/3 the production of Moss the #1 WR.

Sounds pretty consistent so far. As he and Brady get more time together we'll see what develops, but based on the past two seasons with this offense, Galloway is doing just fine.

I say we wait and see what develops between him and TB......

He's a proven veteran. We signed him, he made the 53. Let's not all go crazy after one road loss......

Has anyone in this thread re-watched the Jets game at all. Now I'll give you the Bills game but on every throw to him except the 4th down throw he was wide open. I hate to say it but alot of the time it was Brady's fault that they were not completed except the drop which every one on the team has had the last two weeks. Take for instance the slant that galloway caught in the second qtr. if Brady puts it on the money it's an easy TD no one was in front of Joey but he had to go down to catch it because the throw was off or the play that I'm sure sticks out in everybody minds is the play were brady throws it out of bounds while Joey ran deep. Now look at what transpired I would say joey read the coverage correctly since a.) there was no one within 10 yards of him when the ball went out of bounds and b.) they called the exact same play the very next play and Galloway had his man beat by 2 yards but Brady threw it late which allowed Lito Shepard to make the play. Another big play to Galloway that they didn't connect on was on the third scoring drive on the tipped ball that Moss almost caught in the back of the endzone where Galloway sits down in the zone coverage with a linebacker to the outside of him and a corner to the inside of him and safety over the top yet brady throws it high and behind him which leads to the tipped pass. A couple of these were even documented on NBC's Football America. Give the guy some time what would you rather have a guy that can't get open or a guy who's timing with the QB is slightly off but gets open consistently.

1 he's not a 1000 yerd guy any more forget about that

2 he never was a great at runing routes and we are asking him to be a wes welker troy brown type guy

3 we as fans are looking for to much from a 37 year old WR

if he has a Donte' Stallworth type year for the pats 40 to 50 catch's for 600 to 700 yerds and 3 TD that would be great

Understood.

However, the production I wish to recognize has less to do with stats and more to do with game-changing factors. Is he taking pressure off Moss? Is he opening up space for the other receivers? Are teams respecting him enough to alter their defense?

It's true that it's too early to tell, but so far I am not seeing the game-changes.

Also it is clear the frustration between Brady and Galloway on the field is still there and this naturally doesn't show up in the stats. It seems as if he wants Galloway to get in and out of his breaks faster and more crisp. It may be that Galloway is not used to the precise timing of the routes run in the NE system. He has depended on his straight-line speed for his bread and butter, this is true, but for some reason in NE, this has not been happening.

I did not see this. I wish I had DVR so I could review..
