Icy, it's a business. Dollars make the world go 'round, if you didn't know.

The Powers That Be at the Boston Globe, which owns the Red Sox and NESN are squawking about the Patriots doing a FRACTION of what they themselves have practiced for over 7 years now.

I get it, that means nothing to you.

But in the real world, that's a very big hypocracy.

It's less hypocrisy than it is attacking the other guy so you can try and steer more guys to your product. To them the Patriots and ESPN are like the Jets are to the Patriots. Newspapers aren't public services any more, they're tools wielded by their owners to advance their own interests.

Often time you'll see writers make a "full disclosure" comment when reporting on a company that is part of the same corporation that they work for. I clicked on the story primarily to see if the Globe made any, and no surprise there was none.

There is at least a thousand times more conflict of interest in the Boston Globe-Boston Red Sox relationship than there is between the Patriots and espn.

Hey, this reporter is so on top of things that she wrote "...ESPN, which televises some Sunday afternoon football games." Which of course is not true, I don't think they've ever broadcast the NFL on Sunday afternoon (unless you count a 5PM west coast start as afternoon back when they had Sunday Night Football).

I don't think the deal between Kraft and ESPNBoston is significantly more noteworthy than, say, the fact ESPN reports on the NFL at the same time it pays billions of $ to broadcast NFL games. Media and sports will forever have business relationships.

I think story may just be retaliation by the Globe for ESPNBoston poaching Mike Reiss from them.

In the article Stacey James pointed out that Kraft Sports Group also has a relationship with WEEI. Given how much time 'EEI spends on the Red Sox as opposed to how much time they talk about the Pats, I'd say it is safe to say that KSG does not influence its business partners in the way they report on the Patriots.

This is just comedy gold, being that it's being written in the Globe:

"It has to raise a conflict of interest. We’re supposed to be about transparency. How can you be transparent when you cut such a tight relationship between a media group and a team?" said Chris Cakebread, a Boston University professor who teaches advertising and sports marketing."

THAT is the analogy. Of course, the Pats-ESPN relationship is like third cousins marrying. The Globe-NESN-Red Sox, however, is like a brother and sister marrying (the degree is eons worse).......and then COMPLAINIG about the third cousins' marriage. It's like George Steinbrenner complaining about the high spending of another team.

This statement is 100% right on. It's like how NHL coverage has pretty much completely disappeared from ESPN since they moved over to Versus. I also remember how the NFL bullied ESPN to drop Playmakers.

The Kraft-ESPN relationship is just another string in the long line of media conflicts of interest with the sports world.

However, I wouldn't term it "similar" at all. The Patriots don't OWN a piece of ESPN. The Globe owners DO own a piece of the Red Sox. An apple isn't similar to Apple Jacks.
