Can't be a cap issue

For only a 2nd rounder in 2010 to which the Pats have multiple picks.I wonder if he just thought that the future HOFer would not fit in this offense,I would imagine he would of came up big in the short passing game against the Jets blitz.

144 yards and 2 TDs later in Atlanta, if Belichick could have seen the future I would think BB would have done a little more thinking about it.

I was hoping they would make a run for Gonzalez when I heard Cassel was on the block, and I have to admit I was disappointed when I heard what they got. I have always wanted Brady to have a great pass catching tight end like Gates, Gonzalez, Clark, or even Heath Miller. But no one really knows what was happening in the organization at the time. We dumped Vrabel as what many saw as a cost-cutting move. There are rumors that the Patriots did not want the third overall pick since the rookie salary scale is ridiculous.

Looking back at the situation, and knowing what we know now, with Harrison, Hobbs, Vrabel, Bruschi, and Seymour all gone, my guess is that the Patriots were not really thinking of ways to improve on an already top-notch offense.

Look at the moves this team made. They jettisoned some of the older defenders and brought in 15+ rookies, if you count reserve lists and the PS. NE is clearly looking to rebuild, not sell out to get a run this year. Trading a 2nd rounder for one year of a guy who plays a position NE is pretty deep at goes against everything they did.

I suppose a parallel could be drawn between the Burgess and Gonzo trades, but NE had serious depth issues at OLB which made that trade a bit more necessary.

No doubt Gonzalez is one of the best in NFL history, but giving up a second rounder for only a few years isn't worth it. Then again, the Pats have really struggled in recent years with 2nd round picks. With that said, the TE's aren't killing the Pats, it's the O-line.

Well, it's possible that Pioli didn't call to offer him to Belichick. Gonzalez is also a bit of a diva, so that could be another reason. On the other hand,

Tight ends dont just catch passes, in our schemes blocking is more important, could be character issues too.
Im sure BB wants to upgrade whenever he can by Watson looked pretty good in game 1.
We probably dont win that game without big ben

The interesting here for me is that he was so adamant about saying we didn't look at him at all.

How many times have we heard, "We evaluate every free agent each offseason and go from there. He didn't end up here and we're moving on."

Something else is going on here...Not sure what-BB got angry!

Havent seen any evidence of that yet. Seems like he has been the ultimate team player so far, and has a great attitude...especially considering he knows hes a first ballot HOF'er. I know I might have a little bit of an ego if it were me, but he doesnt seem to. As a long time Falcons fan...believe me...I KNOW divas.

From what I heard he was always fine in KC too...until it was clear they werent trying to win and went to rebuilding mode. Not sure that I blame him there. But you guys probably wouldnt know much about that. You guys havent had a rebuilding season since...**** MacPherson? Anyway, I havent heard of a single character issue involving Gonzalez since he arrived in Atlanta...at least not yet...and from what I read he handled everything as classy in KC as possible. He stayed reasonably quiet and told the owner of his desire to move on.

I'm also thinking something else...trying to hold back but cant...not trying to start a fight but it is what it is. If he were a diva...he might decline interviews on national tv. (pause) Regardless to his reasons or what really happened, when you do that you come off looking like a capital D Diva and kind of a prick (to the rest of us who are indifferent to the Pats). I can understand declining certain questions, or a Tuesday interview beside your car...but NOBODY declines THE* interview! ***The one where they are still on the national broadcast and the sideline reporter is beckoning them. Hell, I think that part of the interview is part of the NFLPA deal tied to the TV contracts!*** Thats worse than Ben Roethlisberger and his shenanigans interviews! Tim Green wrote a really good book and I think one of his rules was, If you are within 1/2 mile of the stadium or practice field, you are fair game from the fans, media, etc. Outside of that is your time and your space. THat can be argued...but when you are still on the FIELD after the game? Geez. Anyway, this is for another thread, but i'm only here for a week, so ill throw it out there as food for thought. Just callin em like I see em. Anyway, when Gonzalez does this, we will know he is a diva.

Absolutely correct. Also better to have Super Bowl rings and MVP trophies and have people ***** and whine about why you declined and interview than to have people argue if you belong in the NFL anymore and if you were ever a good QB to begin with.

As far as Falcon QBs go and from what I have seen of the BC standout and rookie Matt Ryan is that Michael Vick could not carry Ryan's jock.

Although I did always enjoy watching Steve Bartkowski a few decades ago because he was decent as a QB, but you have to wonder why the Falcons passed on Peyton in the '75 draft .

I agree blocking is very important, but I don't think we have good blockers already anyway, maybe we'll get to see them blocking better with some more games.

However, if you have Tony on the field that means one less guy to block as someone must go cover him, no?

Never realized it. The Falcons have passed on so many HOFers by picking duds I probably turned a deaf ear to it anyway. Didnt know you were speaking of Walter Payton. All I saw was Peyton with an e and couldnt get the image of some tall lanky country guy pushing DirecTV on me. I was trying to think of a QB named Peyton drafted that was playing when I was really young and didnt have a clue.

But think about this...had the Falcons drafted Payton instead of Bartkowski, Payton probably wouldnt be a HOF'er. Behind the Falcons O-line...?
