Belichick discusses lack of screens

More great insight from BB and again it shows why us fans complaining on this board really don't have a clue a lot of the time.

What does bother me though, is if he knew ahead of time that they would be bringing the heat in M2M blitzes and that screens wouldn't work.....then what was in place as a counter? You always have to give something up on defense....you can't cover everything 100%

So....what is the counter?

iam sure he forgot to discuss what his game plan was with the media...

Why would you clutter up your own thread with a BS response like yours above.

I am sure that it is pretty well know among the coaching community that M2M blitzes make it hard to hit screens......I am also sure there is a well know few counters to that. I don't think this is magical fairy dust knowledge. Give me a break.

What I am asking for is what is the counter. We have some very knowledgable football background posters on this board. Maybe they can answer.

Relax ...iam not cluttering a thread or care about it...this question was asked by the media to him so i figured you wanted to know the same...but when you start something like
"What does bother me though," you are saying the same thing like the rest of us were "Where were the screens.....then what was in place as a counter? " ...
obviously whatever they countered with didnt work thats why it bother's us.

There are probably several counters, but I doubt he's going to reveal which one he had in mind to the whole world.

the problem stems from sports writers and fans thinking they know something about a sport because their team is good

As futile as the regular offense was performing doing what they were doing I don't think it would have been any worse for the Pats to try their hand at a few more screens. Maybe they connect on one or two.

Exactly. It isn't magic. You have 2 seconds to get a pass off so the receivers have to expose the coverage in those 2 seconds. Just about any route could work depending on who is in coverage. They keys are getting open in those 2 seconds and burning the defense with YAC. That is why missing Welker for this game was disproportionately painful. Edelman did a fine job but Welker would have been a consistent move-the-chains guy against that pressure.

On the plus side, there couldn't have been a more perfect game for Edelman and Galloway to get experience. The results were mixed but gotta look for the silver lining.

As I've said before, the problem on Sunday (and last Monday) was that Brady is not yet mentally comfortable playing football. The counters to those blitzes were certainly employed in the game, but Brady is not currently stepping into throws or hanging in the pocket under pressure. When he does throw the ball, it doesn't go where he wants it to because he's unconsciously/involuntarily protecting that knee and not using the proper mechanic. It will take time before he gets that mental comfort back and hits the throws properly. How long, nobody knows. However, I would suggest that by the second Jets game, he'll have made sufficient improvement that you'll see a very different offensive performance.

I agree on the mechanics, but you can't really get into Brady's head and say that he's unconciously protecting the knee. Maybe he's just rusty since he hasn't played at game-speed in such a long time, maybe he's just had a few bad games, or maybe you're right and it's the knee.

Actually, as he noted, screening in those situations can lead to big gains. It's a matter of hitting on the right calls, just as most screens are. They didn't do them even though they weren't getting the job done with other avenues of attack. The question of "why not", therefore, still holds up.

You're right that I can't get into his head specifically, but what I'm saying is based on the experiences of others who have come back from this type of injury as well as those who specifically know Brady and have commented on it.

It appears as if Rex Ryan has come up with a great defence that can: pressure the QB; stop screen passes; stop the run while using average DLine, LB's with average speed, and good secondary (one CB and one S).

Can someone please explain why more teams are not using Rex Ryan's defence ?

Because he hasn't come up with a defense that does all that. He played a completely unprepared Houston team weak one, and a team week 2 with a quarterback who can't currently throw the ball straight, one rookie WR and a third WR that doesn't have the system down yet.

Now, that's not to say that Ryan's defense isn't any good. It was great in Baltimore, albeit with a good to great D-line, LBs with good speed, and one of the best safeties in the league. He does have a good defensive system, but it won't take an average set of players and make a dominant defense out of them. There are also other good defensive systems which teams try to employ. Coaches choose the one they have had experience with and like the principles of the most. They also pick the ones which best suit their personell.

We lost by 7 points, despite a comedy of errors. Brady is working his way back and is not there yet.

Take last years second half Matt Cassel, who was great but is a fraction of the QB TFB usually is, or get Welker in the game (and healthy) and we win, despite a long list of goofs.

This isn't a response to the OP, but some of the following posts that want to crown Rex Ryan a genius.

Despite all those qualities , his ravens teams have failed to hold on in the end of critical games. ask the steelers. All that defense has got ryan 0 championships.not saying its a bad defense. but you need very good players to play it and i mean the raven players. the jets players are yet to go through the whole season so will see how it compares to the ravens.

Seems to me the entire game plan was Brady in shotgun looking for the 5 to 15 yd pass THE ENTIRE GAME.
No draws, no screens, no play action.
Brady in shotgun looking for the 5 to 15 yd pass THE ENTIRE GAME.
This was not one of the better coached games.
That's why I'm not going overboard over this loss.
Did a whole lot more wrong than right and lost by a whopping 7 points on the road to the NFL's September dynasty :)D ) the New Jersey Jets.
