Patriots use three-WR set for most of game

A look at the positional groupings utilized by the Patriots in their 16-9 loss to the Jets:

3 WR/1 TE/1 RB -- 76 of 77 snaps
1 WR/2 TE/1 FB/1 RB -- 1 of 77

(Note: The Patriots had 67 official snaps. Ten penalties were included to account for the total of 77 snaps.)

ANALYSIS: The modus operandi of the offense is to mix and match positional groupings, but that was not the case in this game. The Patriots instead focused on tempo, sticking with the no-huddle throughout as skill-position players had play-sheets on their wrists and the sideline communication was tweaked. The first 64 plays were in the three-receiver set. The lone play the Patriots went away from that alignment was on third-and-1 with 7:51 remaining in the fourth quarter. Fred Taylor was stopped for a loss of 1 yard.

Defensive snaps played by Patriots defenders

Butler's playing time increased in second half

A look at the defensive snaps played by Patriots defenders in the team's 16-9 loss to the Jets, as charted in the press box (small margin for error):

CB Leigh Bodden -- 56 of 56 snaps
LB Gary Guyton -- 56 of 56
DE Jarvis Green -- 53 of 56
CB/S Shawn Springs -- 51 of 56
DT Mike Wright -- 51 of 56
LB Adalius Thomas -- 42 of 56
CB Jonathan Wilhite -- 40 of 56
S Brandon McGowan -- 39 of 56
S Brandon Meriweather -- 39 of 56
DE Ty Warren -- 39 of 56
DT Vince Wilfork -- 38 of 56
CB Darius Butler -- 29 of 56
S James Sanders -- 28 of 56
DE Derrick Burgess -- 17 of 56
DE Tully Banta-Cain -- 14 of 56
LB Pierre Woods -- 12 of 56
DT Ron Brace -- 6 of 56
DT Myron Pryor -- 3 of 56
S Pat Chung -- 2 of 56
LB Eric Alexander -- 1 of 56

(Note: The Jets had 55 official plays from scrimmage. Two game-ending kneel-downs were not included, while three penalties were included)

ANALYSIS: The Patriots mixed and matched their defense, relying most heavily on a 4-2-5 package (4 defensive linemen, 2 linebackers, 5 defensive backs). That alignment had Ty Warren and Jarvis Green at end, with Vince Wilfork and Mike Wright at tackle. ... At times, the Patriots employed six defensive backs in the dime, and even had seven defensive backs on the field on a few occasions. The seven defensive backs package couldn't stop a third-and-13 in the third quarter, as Leon Washington caught a checkdown and somehow picked up the 13 yards. When that happens, it is poor defense. ... Meriweather missed most of the first half with a right ankle injury, then on his first play back he botched a costly tackle on Jerricho Cotchery's 45-yard catch-and-run in the third quarter, which was a key play in the game. Those are the type of mistakes that one doesn't expect from a first-round draft choice. ... It was a quiet game for edge rushers Burgess and Banta-Cain, as the Patriots didn't call on their nickel front that often. ... Rookie Darius Butler's play-time increased late in the game.

I find it quite surprising after the Buffalo game where they were changing groupings nonstop that they never tried to mix it up.

It is interesting to see that Meriweather was only used that much.. and that the rookies go so many snaps.. looks like there is a lot of confidence in Darius Butler..

meriweather was injured thats why. he came out for a bit and got his ankle taped and was on sideline till they felt comfortable letting him back in

Meriweather left the game in the first half with an ankle injury; he returned for the start of the second half.

That would explain why Burgess ( and the pass rush as a whole) seemed to be invisible. It's obvious the Pats came out to stop the run. The difference was the half-time adjustments that the Jets made, and the inability for the Pats to adjust to that. Sad to see a rookie sit back there and throw darts. But with little pass rush, it was to be expected.

Forgot about that.. was not aware that he was gone that long though.

Interesting to see that Mc Gowan got more snaps than Sanders.

BB said on WEEI tonight that it was because they wanted more speed to combat Jones and Washington. He also said that Sanders replaced Meriweather, not McGowan.

It's just bizarre to have the same combination in 76 out of 77 plays, regardless of any circumstances.

One of the few games where I thought the team was flat out stubborn. The formula was not working, plain and simple. I had zero confidence that we would score on any of the numerous drives in the fourth quarter, and let me tell you, I believe in Brady.
