Patriots use three-WR set for most of game
A look at the positional groupings utilized by the Patriots in their 16-9 loss to the Jets:
3 WR/1 TE/1 RB -- 76 of 77 snaps
1 WR/2 TE/1 FB/1 RB -- 1 of 77
(Note: The Patriots had 67 official snaps. Ten penalties were included to account for the total of 77 snaps.)
ANALYSIS: The modus operandi of the offense is to mix and match positional groupings, but that was not the case in this game. The Patriots instead focused on tempo, sticking with the no-huddle throughout as skill-position players had play-sheets on their wrists and the sideline communication was tweaked. The first 64 plays were in the three-receiver set. The lone play the Patriots went away from that alignment was on third-and-1 with 7:51 remaining in the fourth quarter. Fred Taylor was stopped for a loss of 1 yard.

That alignment had Ty Warren and Jarvis Green at end, with Vince Wilfork and Mike Wright at tackle. ... At times, the Patriots employed six defensive backs in the dime, and even had seven defensive backs on the field on a few occasions. The seven defensive backs package couldn't stop a third-and-13 in the third quarter, as Leon Washington caught a checkdown and somehow picked up the 13 yards. When that happens, it is poor defense. ... Meriweather missed most of the first half with a right ankle injury, then on his first play back he botched a costly tackle on Jerricho Cotchery's 45-yard catch-and-run in the third quarter, which was a key play in the game. Those are the type of mistakes that one doesn't expect from a first-round draft choice. ...
