The Bills certainly are not bottom 5 in the league as projected...I've never thought that coming into this year-

And the jets - well about week 9 last year they were in super bowl talks...so i dont care about them either.

go pats. lol

Re: bills and jets better then we think ?

It could well be. It happened to the Colts. They were so good that the division was forced to up its game to keep up. Perhaps we should have seen it coming, eh?

Very nice post. Let's take each team in turn.

1. Buffalo

The Bills started last season hot, predicting some on this site to claim that they were the future of the AFC East, and then collapsed down the stretch. They looked pitiful in the pre-season and were in disarray, firing their Offensive Coordinator, cutting their projected starting Left Tackle, and predicting many to project them as a bottom 5 team. So far in 2 games they've been much better than that. Their offensive line was their biggest question mark but they've gotten excellent interior play out of Andy Levitre and Eric Wood (a favorite of many on this board last spring). Edwards is a solid QB, they have good WRs, and Fred Jackson will be terrific combined with Marshawn Lynch once Lynch returns. The defense is respectable. They look like a solid 8-8 kind of team at this point and possibly better. Not a pushover, and better than most expected them based on their performance so far.

2. New York Jets

The Jets went 9-7 last year and were in position to win the division before falling apart at the end. They went out and made a lot of good moves, especially bolstering their defense. So far over the first 2 games they've been one of the most impressive teams in the league (probably the most impressive over the first 2 games along with New Orleans), shutting down a Houston team that put up 34 points today against a Tennessee team that finished 13-3 last year, and holding the vaunted NE offense to 3 field goals. Darrell Revis has emerged as a true shutdown CB and is looking to move into Scrabble territory, having so far shut down Andre Johnson and Randy Moss in consecutive weeks. David Harris and Bart Scott are as good a 3-4 ILB combo as there is in the NFL. Kris Jenkins is always a force when healthy. And Rex Ryan has them playing a very aggressive and disruptive style, which they have so far executed to perfection. The offensive line is solid, they have legitimate weapons in Leon Washington and Dustin Keller, and Mark Sanchez has so far played with a lot of poise for a rookie, reminiscent of Matt Ryan from a year ago. Pre-season predictions varied, but no one expected them to come out this dominant, so based on 2 games they are muchbetter than expected, especially with Calvin Pace and Shaun Ellis having been under suspension.

It's too early to tell how good the Jets will be. They could be very good, or they could peak early and peter out over the course of a 16 game season. But they are certainly a team to be taken very seriously, and look to perhaps be this year's version of Tennessee. I don't expect them to collapse the way they did last year. I suspect we'll have to elevate our game considerably from our performance over the first 2 games in order to take the division away from them.

Certainly neither team was a cakewalk. So I would agree with your OP that our first 2 opponents have played better than predicted.

Re: bills and jets better then we think ?

They're a little better than people were predicting. The problem is that the Pats are worse than we thought they would be. Don't worry though, the jets, and jills wont be around for the AFCCG. :D

Re: bills and jets better then we think ?

Not sure if we know the answer to much of this, think threads like this should be put on the back burner and see what is going on in week 9... right now the Jets look great and the Bills look better, but it is a marathon...

We will have a good idea before the bye week. Over the next month

the Patriots play the Falcons, Ravens, and Titans. All three are

home games. If the Patriots can't win at least two of these games,

they don't belong in the playoffs.

Even if the rest of the eastern division looses half of their remaining games?? You really do not know how things will shake out until late Nov..

Blanket statements like this mean crap...

Do you honestly think the Patriots could be 4-3 at the bye week

and win enough games from that point on to win the division? With

the Colts and Saints on the road, I don't know if they could.

wouldnt be the first time :D

we're gonna win (and lose) ugly for awhile, but by midseason, we'll be fine. It'll be just like the glory days :D

In 2005 the Pats opened 4-4, alternating wins and losses, and had a 6-5 record before finishing 10-6 and winning the division.

What you are saying was true years ago. My concern is that

the list of battle tested veterans who accomplished these feats

becomes shorter each year. Do the new players (especially on

defense) have the same desire to win?

Re: bills and jets better then we think ?

If you mean "did we lose because we ran into a couple juggernauts"?

No. We played poorly. Both those games were easily winnable. If we keep playing like that it will be a long year.

Re: bills and jets better then we think ?

In 2005 the Pats opened 4-4, alternating wins and losses, and had a 6-5 record before finishing 10-6 and winning the division.

The 2007 Giants opened 0--2 and were 9--5 in the middle of December, including a 41--17 blowout by the Vikings.

Last year's Cardinals ended up 9--7 and came within a circus catch by Santonio Holmes of winning it all.

Flamers please note that my point is NOT to ideal-ize either of those teams, but just to say it's a long season and that how you finish is a lot more important than how you start.

IMHO, everything that is happening to the Pats right now was completely predictable and some of us had the guts to say so in writing out here before the season started. I still see them winning the Division and contending for the SB.

I live in Buffalo.

Terrel Owens, the local talk says, has already become a huge distraction. He was yelling at Edwards last week in the huddle on their last drive. He was pissed at halftime this week even though the Bills had a big lead.

His act has already worn thin.

He is going to become divisive on that team.

we're gonna find out soon enough, but why assume the answer is "no?"

Yes, but there are other factors to look at. I really think the Jets are for real as far as being a contender, the Bills have improved with TO and most importantly, their defense. Combined with the Pats and some issues that need to be addressed, this would be the time to beat them. Let the Jets continue to beat their chests and flap their gums and act like they have the division in their pockets because it's only WEEK 2 for crying out loud. I have no doubts that the Pats will continue to get better and quietly walk into the next matchup with the Jets at Gillette ready to play.

I am not the least bit worried about the Bills. With TO around, it's only a matter of time 'til he causes the team to implode, it's happen everywhere he's been since about the time he was a rookie, it will happen in Buffalo, too.

As for the Jests, no doubt they are playing harder under Ryan than they ever did for Mangina. Revis has been good, and continues to get better. Look for him to be in a Pats uni in the next couple of years. :D As for the rest of the D, you have to consider that there is no film on the group as a whole. As they play a few games, teams will begin to find some of the things that work, and will begin to exploit them. They aren't going to go the entire season without giving up a touchdown.

Jets are decent.

We're just bad though. Horrific with Brady playing like this. He'd be benched if he didn't have his history.
