Thoughts on the game and a good, long look at this team...

I see the situation a bit differently.

The offensive talent is the best in the league. We should be able to score 17 points without Welker.

The Pats played a crappy game and still only lost by 7 on the road

while missing 3 of their 4 best players (Seymour, Mayo, Welker)

254 yards total offense and 16 points given:

1. Excellent field position by the Jets.
2. Recent loss of Seymour (by trade).
3. Recent loss of Mayo (by injury).
4. Defense still learning how to play together and adjusting to their roles.

Is this as good as it will get? I don't know for certain, but I don't think so. I'm hoping that as they get more experienced with the system and more comfortable together, as the rookies develop, and when Mayo comes back that we will see more. My biggest concern is not the players but the overly passive approach which the coaching staff seems to favor.

i agree that the play calling by the DC is to vanilla thats why i dont think the D will get any better i just hope it dont get worst i cant see them stoping a QB like drew brees with out geting in he's face a few times

Seymour is no longer a member of the Patriots, and that was the team's choice. As a result, using his absence is not a valid argument in defense of the team's struggles anymore. It is still valid to ask how much help that 2011 first round draft pick was to the pass rush today.

The answer is "nothing". The Raiders finally ended up robbing us, at least in the short term. It sucks that we're going to have to blitz more often that we have in the past, but we need to get to the quarterback. The only time we even breathed on Sanchez today was when we brought pressure from the LBs. I hope BB sees this and adjusts accordingly.

You want pressure on the quarterback. You apparently didn't like our defensive schemes against the jets. Perhaps with more pressure and more blitzing, the jets would have scored MORE than 16 points.

you would think that with brady coming off major knee surgery belichick would draft an offensive lineman early in last year's draft. Michael Oher was there at 22. oops.

dante is happy with Vollmer. Belichick is happy with Butler, a 2010 2nd rounder and Edelman instead of the Oher.

That's the chance you take when you blitz. When we didn't blitz, Sanchez had all day to sit back in the pocket and pick us apart. When we brought TBC (at the end of the game), he got hit hard. Similarly, we brought pressure on the Jets' 3rd down and Sanchez ended up having to leave the pocket where he got sacked by Ty Warren. Drive over.

Personally, I think we would have been a little better off bringing some LB pressure on a 22 year old rookie than we would have if we just sat back and gave him enough time to go through all of his reads... which is exactly what we did. That four man rush from Wilfork, Wright, Warren, and Green hardly generated any pressure whatsoever, aside from the hit in the beginning of the game from Wright that forced the fumble. But who am I to argue the defensive gameplan?

7 men in the pattern didn't stop Leon Washington from running free, and it didn't help the secondary defend the middle of the field against a QB who hasn't proven that he can complete pocket passes outside the numbers.

I really wanted Oher as well. I know for a fact that I'm not the only one on here either.

Belichick is happy with a 2011 draft pick instead of Seymour, too. I'm not sure that using that argument is really the right way to go.

I understand that the defensive coaches need to apologize for not limiting the jets to 6 points.

I'd love to be able to read BB's mind on what he thinks of the Seymour trade right now. My guess is he's not quite as enthusiastic as he was a couple of weeks ago, but alas, we'll never know.

i'm sure dante is really happy with vollmer. but we could have drafted Oher, Butler AND Vollmer. I really didn't see the point in drafting Chung at the expense of protecting Brady. Belichick has been pulling this same stuff - not drafting OL early in the draft - for the past several years. Does he really think Mankins, Light, etc. are what they were in 2004? That OL has remained the same forever.

If only the d*mn defense had limited the Jets to 8 points, we could have won 9-8 and continued to pretend that everything was hunky dory.

OK, then you answer

Would prefer having Oher on the roster instead of having Butler, the 2010 2nd and Edelman? After all that is what we got for the 23 we might have used to draft Oher.

Also, are satisfied with Vollmer and LeVoir as our OT improvements?

1 what could mayo have done got 20 tackels i dont think the jets go from scoreing 16 points to 6

2 the jets game plan was to stop moss and welker thats why Edelman had a big game he was the wild card once they started treating him like he was welker they stoped him to

3 like Deus Irae said seymour is not whit the team any more and that is just like saying we could have won if we had frank gore or julius peppers

the jets won and that it they had a good game plan they talked all week long and backed it up

One need not be exclusive of the other, as you well know. As for limiting the Jets to 6 points, what year did that happen? It certainly didn't happen in this week's game.

Also, field position is a part of the game.

I'll add this regarding the play calls:

The Jets were extremely aggressive getting after Tom and I thought the best way to slow down their pass rush was to call a few screens. Yet none was ever called. I remember when the screen was a staple of Weiss' offense in NE.

The lack of creativity with our offense is disturbing. We ran some kind of draw/counter play to some success (a few holding calls negated some of those nice runs). And I thought if we had some other variation of that play, we could have taken advantage of the defense because in the second half, the Jets were looking for that play.

Lastly, I hate to say it, but Brady sucked today.

Anyone who's satisfied with Vollmer and LeVoir as OT improvements at this point should probably quit following football immediately, given that neither is anything approaching an improvement over either starting tackle as of right now, and neither is yet starter material. As for the Oher deal, your argument is misleading, as most "choose only one" arguments about the draft tend to be. The team could have made moves to get those players if it was truly believed that they were worth getting.
