Thoughts on the game and a good, long look at this team...

Yeah. I love Mayo too. We really could have struck gold either way there. On top of that, we still don't know what we're going to have with SeaBass in a few years. However, it would have been really nice to have Clady or Oher today.

Frankly I'd rather have Mayo and Oher than Clady and Chung.

Looking at the team, they are not any near as talented as 2007 (duh). But player by player the Jets stack up very well against the Patriots. Wilfork, Warren and Thomas (and Mayo) would be the only defensive players that might start for the Jets.

Meriweather and Bodden would start for the Jets.

I am not using this as an excuse for losing today but can someone find me 1 passing play where a jets player was not hanging all over our wr's before the ball got there. It seemed like every pass play they were getting there early or hitting our arms or pulling jersey's and nothing was being called. To me that was total BS. I feel that the offense is too predictable as it showed when edelman got blown up on that quick pass to the right. We have to come out and go double tight and run power and mix in the spread. We can't just go spread all day and throw on good defenses. I do think when welker comes back that will be huge with 4 wides of moss, galloway, welker and edelman. 1 loss doesn't make a season but I think we need to improve quickly as that will turn into 4,5,6 losses before we know it.

I agree with you about the power running game. I've been talking about it all afternoon on the board. However, it seems that only a quarter of the people here accurately recognize the fact that we need a more power oriented running game. The rest seem to blame the five O-linemen that are forced to block six and seven defenders. No wonder Brady is getting hit.

Do you think TB missing a year and then coming back to a brand new Cord. has anything to do with it?

Thats a possibility. The fact is the offensive play calling (in my opinion) is terrible. Now there could be a couple of reasons why. Could it be that the coaches want to ease Brady back on the field because of his injury by calling short and intermediate routes. Or is it the OFF COOR learning play calling duties and having to learn and adjust the offence on the fly..All I know is that the go routes we have seen in the past are non existant right now...I think we will have a better idea of where this offense stands by week 6..

Sometimes I think we feel like we have to pass the ball because we have Brady, Welker, Moss et al. Obviously we aren't a grind it out of the big set sort of offense. But I think we HAVE to run the ball more. It was generally working today and I thought it could have worked more to our advantage last week too. Do our offensive minds have the patience to do it?

Agreed, and I certainly don't think the staff has done much to ease Brady back into it. By all means feel free to lean on the run game a little. Even if it means your just setting em up later for some max protect stuff..... There going to get much better and Edelman is going to be real problematic when paired with Welker. I don't know why everyone is so upset? Lack of heart or rebuilding, please. Go change yo diapa!!

Kontra did a great job with his observations. I'll add a few things:

1.) When the defensive line can't get pressure, it exposes the back 7 against both the run and the pass. Anyone who didn't understand why so many of us didn't like the Seymour trade should probably get it now.

2.) Sanchez can't complete passes outside the numbers except on screens or when he runs to shorten the distance, yet the Patriots allowed him to get throws downfield inside the numbers. That's just terrible scouting or piss-poor execution.

3.) Brady was terrible today, and it wasn't the fault of the line, the receivers, the officials or anyone else besides Brady. He was skittish behind the line, he was making poor reads, he was making poor throws, and he either needs to not run out of the pocket and take a sack/inc or to run out of the pocket with authority. Sadly, the mental game doesn't look like it's up to dealing with heavy blitzing, and it's not even really ready for a regular season game. I hope he can clear the cobwebs in a hurry, or this team is in some trouble.

4.) Brady has been bailing his receivers out for years. It would have been nice to see his receivers bail him out today. Edelman, Galloway and Moss all blew plays they could have and, at least arguably, should have made.

5.) This team is SSSSSSSSSSSLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW on wide running plays, and I'm not talking about the running backs. I'm talking about the QB making the handoff, and the O-line pulling.

6.) Drunken monkeys throwing darts at a board could have come up with a better play combination than the untitled offensive coordinator did today. That may have been the poorest called offensive game since the early days of Charlie Weis.

7.) That punt on 4th down was a mistake. They should have gone for it. That's not revisionist history. I was saying it at the time.

8.) Baker looks slow off the line when he's not in the redzone. It's as if he's only got a 5 step burst.

9.) Did Kevin Faulk age 3 years in one week? Maybe it was just part of the general crappiness, but he looked old and slow today. I can see why Maroney was taking his touches early on in the game.

10.) As a general "wrap it up" rant.... This Patriots team let a good, but overrated, defensive team with a horrible quarterback beat it today, and they would have lost last week had they not been able to get a turnover on special teams. 0-2 is probably what they deserve to be, and if they don't pull their heads out of their asses, the Patriots could certainly lose to Atlanta and Baltimore, at home, and be facing a 1-3 start to the season.

How the hell is throwing the football 40+ times and abandoning the ran easing brady in....?

So that's 6 of 11 Patriots on D would start for the Jets.

No I think you have to take Wilfork off that list...... For how they use Jenkins, he's a better fit.

I also thought it was notable that Jenkins did pretty much nothing all day.

Yeah, but Wilfork can play more than 4 games a season.

Just curious who is doing the play calling for the Pats??

Please read the entire opening post. By your reply, I can tell that you obviously didn't. In the post, I state that Brady did not get sacked, but got hit entirely too much. I know it's long, but you can read it...

The OL did a good job of not allowing Brady to get sacked

I'm referring to that, they didn't do ****.

I agree with this 100 percent.

Two plays in particular. The THIRD time they decided to run the same EXACT short pass to Edelman on 2nd and 10, which got stuffed, making it third and 11. Creative guys, really.

Also: Morris' run on third down which was stuffed by Ellis. Seriously, did anyone not see that coming from a MILE away?

Meriweather and Bodden would start for the Jets.

I would call it a draw, Eric Smith is a pretty good player nothing special, kind of like Merriweather. Also call Bodden and Sheppard a draw.

Going further is not just the overall player by player analysis but the impact players at each unit.

Jenkins is head and shoulders the best defensive lineman on either roster.
Revis is the best CB on either roster.
Rhodes is the best safety
The combo of Harris, Scott, Thomas, Pace is vastly superior than the Patriots.

They are just a more talented defensive unit with a better scheme. Next time around the Patriots will be that much wiser and hopefully can make some adjustments.

Just curious who is doing the play calling for the Pats??
