I think one key might be protect the middle. Force Jets to go outside
to get to Tom.
Jenkins may require Double team. His bigness could be an advantage if
PATs can stop him to clog up the middle. That should get Tom 3 to 4 secs.
JETs Dline, with exception of Jenkins, is not that big. PATs Oline should
be able to hold. Keep two of TEs/RBs for blocking and /or short check down.
No allowed blitzes up the middle.
That leaves three route runners. Clog the middle and give Tom Time.
Tom just has to be careful of the unblocked CB blitz.
If Jenkins has to really put out on every play I bet by half he'll be toast.

I personally hope the Jets blitz, I also think there going to have if they want to put pressure on Tom.

OLine is fine. TE's can pitch in too.
We have a decent Oline that will be able to play pass and open up the rushing.

Rex will be aggressive and we kinda know what to expect.
We've seen the Ravens D plays with diff players- same concept

I'm hoping Baker can give our D some tips for Snottenheimers playcalls They prob. changed em all.

Its going to be very physical for 60 minutes.

Expect to see some new stuff!

I'd imagine Belichick and O'Brien are spending some time studying last year's Colts/Ravens game for ideas.

I expect a coach as aggressive as Ryan is going to trust Revis to cover Moss 1-on-1 with hopes of either freeing up Rhodes to cover Welker or adding him to a pass rush that is currently lacking Calvin Pace.

The key to the Pats O vs. Jets D matchup is going to be the offense's recognition of Rhodes. Revis will contain Moss to an extent. Moss will catch a few balls and a TD, but this game belongs to the Welker/Galloway/Watson/Baker/Faulk types. If Rhodes is blitzing, there will be mismatches downfield, and Galloway and Watson should make plays. If Rhodes drops into coverage, Welker and the RBs can feast on the lack of depth inside.

This is a coach's battle. The team that masks it's intentions best will win this one. If so, I like New England's odds.

In '07 we went no huddle on our last drive in Baltimore and did not give the Ravens D time to set their blitzes.

I expect to see a few drives go no huddle, especially if they motion Jenkins too much. He is not meant to be a LB and will gas quickly if featured in multiple blitz schemes, i.e., shooting the A gap behind ILBs like he did in Houston.

only thing i worry is that their D will wanna exploit the Brady's awareness that his left knee was injured last year and make him unconfortable that way, forcing brady into untimed and/or forced passes. But, as a pro that Tom is, hope he proves me wrong. BUt there is where we'll win this game, that is keeping Tommy out of trouble. Ill be in mexico tomorrow for 5 days and they dont have CBS. ARGH, hopefuly i find some internet :D

I think Moss will do way bettre than you predict - I don't think there is a DB in the NFL capable of predictably covering Moss 1 on 1 and holding him to 'a few catches'

The 2007 Week 1 match-up

9 Catches 183 yards 1 TD

Revis played that game too.

I think this game is more about Pats D vs Jets O actually. If the Jets control the ball and time of possession, their D will be flying around. If the Pats can control time of possession, Jenkins and his buds will be dragging in the 4th quarter.

In terms of match ups, I think all of the Jets' LBs are weak in coverage, as is the SS position. That's why they have to blitz in order to be successful. The Pats should be able to play either out of their base 2TE package and create match up issues with Watson, Baker, Faulk, and Maroney. This base 2 TE package will also enable us to use max protection and try to catch the Ravens in man-man on the outside.

I'm hoping Ben Watson turns up to play like he did against the Bills. He could be the key.

If we have our O-Line, plus Faulk to block and alternately release Baker and Watson into routes, we could see some excellent mismatches through the middle. If the line holds and they need coverage of Watson and Moss screaming out and Welker sliding aacross the middle, we can wear the D pretty good.

if you watch the colts 2006 SB america's game , manning says that before the baltimore playoff game, he watched how the pats faced the jets scheme as he found it similar and how the pats used a quick short passing game to neurtralize the jets defense inthe pats/jets playoff game. he took that idea and applied it to the balt defense.
So its all a circle :)

With the Jets blitz coming, I'm expecting a lot of quick passes and screens to Faulk, Welker, and Watson in the first half. Once the Jets finally take their foot off the pedal to address the dink-and-dunking game, Brady will find Moss, but more interestingly, Galloway for some big gains in the second half.

If the Jets keep bringing the house throughout the whole day, it will be death by screens for New York. With such an aggressive style on the blitz, I'd expect decent YAC for the Pats' receivers and backs.

The Pats might also try some runs away from the blitz, since the Jets are likely to overload on one side. It could be Taylor's coming out party if they decide to go this route. Some success here could set up the play action nicely for some big gains up the middle come the second half.

I know I'm oversimplifying it, but that's the jist of how I see it going.

Very nice analysis. Aggressive is the key word for the Jets. They have worked themselves up into a fury. The Pats, on the other hand, will be cool and collected, and will try to take advantage of that aggressiveness.

Some thoughts:

1. I agree the Jets put Revis on Moss 1-on-1. I don't think any CB can totally shut down Moss, but I think Revis contains him. I hope TB doesn't try to force it to Moss, but instead uses his other receivers, as you have mentioned. The Jets can't cover all of them. I think Moss gets something like 6 catches for 80 yards and 1-2 TDs.

2. I think the Pats will try to use the Jets' aggressiveness against them, with delayed runs, screen passes and short rhythm patterns to take advantage of the blitz and overpursuit. Rhodes is a fine safety, but very aggressive, and obviously very pumped up for this game. I expect him to be the victim of his own adrenaline to some extent, and possibly Bart Scott too. Scott is probably still smarting from the dumb penalty he got which was critical in the 2007 Baltimore game. The Pats will remain cool, and the Jets will get frustrated if things don't go their way. Welker should get a lot of yards after the catch.

3. Outside of Jenkins, the Jets DL doesn't have enough weapons to overpower the Pats' OL. Koppen will likely need help in the middle, but our tackles should be able to handle the ends. Picking up the blitz will be key, but we should have TE help. Jenkins will wear down by the 4th quarter.

I personally think the Pats offense will have a big day. If Galloway can get in sync with Brady he could have a big day. I predict TB throws for around 320 yards and 4 TD passes (most likely 1 each to Moss, Galloway, Watson and Baker), and we run for around 120 yards. Kevin Faulk will have a big day.

I predict a close first half with the Pats up something like 14-10 and the Jets thinking they can pull it off. A long 3rd quarter drive breaks their back and puts the Pats up 21-10. Then the Jets get frustrated and tired, and TB goes for the jugular with 3 4th quarter TDs, for a 42-10 final score. The media screams foul against the Pats for running up the score. :D

I agree about Galloway. I think this could be a big day for him.

With Moss and Galloway on the outside, I'd expect a lot of teams to play their safeties a bit deeper. This means Welker, Watson/TE, Faulk time. The question is, do the Patriots put the ball in the end zone with the underneath stuff? The Jets will not back off the deeper safety defensive scheme until it hurts them in the form of Patriot TD's (something that Patriots were not doing against Buff). Maybe I missed something but it sure seemed like the 6 to 7 yard outside pattern was there all day for the Patriots if they wanted it. Likely the CB's are favoring a Moss/Galloway move deep. So with a quick turn to the sideline, the window for 6 yard completion after completion is there. I also thought the TE slant down the middle was open more than just the last 5 minutes of the 4th quarter. Needless to say this starts with the OL giving Brady some time.

As far as death by screens, are you speaking about them or us? Buff was killing us with the screens easily flipped right over every Patriot pass rusher. The Jets are going to put some points up on us if we are not better prepared for that. BB must have it drilled this into their heads by now.

I was flipping thru the channels last night and watched a little bit of Playbook on NFLN and they were showing the Jets D vs. Houston last week and there were a lot of blitzes. I think if the Jets try to blitz, that will leave some excellent one on one matchups in favour of the Pats.

What kind of impact do you think Maroney will have in this game.? Imagine if we go with two running backs in the offensive back field. We put Maroney on one side and Faulk on the other. Both backs know how to get yards after the catch and both backs can block. It could force the Jests linebackers to spread out more and open up routes for Welker, Watson and Baker.

How is that possible when Ryan was not coaching the Jets back then? Jets played a far different D than they do now.

Also the Ravens D was and is different than the Jets D back then.

I am just asking for clarification.
