Practice player of the week (the 'other' Brandon)

I am impressed so far on what I've seen from him, and I think this was an excellent offseason pickup. I kind of felt he would be the first off the bench in case of injury, but didn't expect so many reps already.

I was surprised when some thought he'd be cut, or on the bubble even--I think they just assumed Chung would be thrown to the wolves early on, because he was a high pick.

I haven't checked to see how many plays he was in on, maybe someone else has some idea, but I think he's shown more than some expected already.

Thoughts?

Reiss had his reps in his blog, the link is there in the game breakdown thread. I haven't seen much of him in the first half, but then I haven't seen much of Sanders either.

I know I saw him more than I expected, but he's been somewhat of my preseason/TC binky, so I may have had a biased view also.

A very solid pickup indeed, so far - starting experience with da Bears, ex-UMaine, good size for FS, ST ability. Chung & McGowan make up prob. one of the better pairs of backup Safeties in football.

I was disappointed when we didn't sign DeVito as a UDFA, or even select him with our 2nd 7th-rounder, during the disasterous '07 draft. I'd rather have him, or even Milton's Tim Bulman, than the over-paid, injury-prone Mike Wright.

The camera angles don't do much for the "old man," but I always see him taking care of business when I dig into the broadcast recording.

Yup, the ones getting past the DL and LB so the secondary lads had to make the tackles.

Yup, those same ones. Where Sanders was the only one doing his job. He was blowing up the blocking, but his pursuit wasn't getting there.

I agree. Sanders saved a lot of runs from being a lot worse. Blame the LBs in front of him more than him. But the one thing I noticed about McGowan is he's in there an awful lot. It's weird, because I just don't see what he adds to jump in the fray so soon.

Depth. There may be games where a 3rd Safety is desired over a 3rd CB; further, if Sanders or Meriweather are injured McGowan starts.

It appears BB, Pees, and Boyer think McGowan is good enough to be more than an emergency/Special Teams Safety - if that is the case it is very good news.
