I guess Rhodes doesn't think talk is cheap:

Rhodes wants to embarrass Patriots - Extra Points - Boston.com

“Any quarterback can be rattled,” Rhodes said. ‘He’s one of the best, don’t get me wrong. That’s evident. Any quarterback, Peyton Manning, even if you get in his face, if you rattle the quarterback, you get pressure on the quarterback, any quarterback it is, he’s not going to be the same. Nobody. That’s not to say he’s not going to come back and make a play after.”

These guys are really asking for it. It's kind of pathetic b/c its based purely on timing (Brady coming off an injury, Mayo being injured), but the Jets clearly think we're ripe for the taking this week.

In a way, you have to thank the Jets for this. They've taken all the pressure on this game and shifted it upon themselves. If they lose, and if they lose big, it will be the kind of loss that briefly derails seasons and will affect them in ensuing weeks (ie, their pathetic loss to SD after we beat them in Week 2 when they were also getting hyped for the game against us).

re: Kerry Rhodes: "We want to embarass the Patriots"(Merged)

The amusing part of all this to me is this is a game the Jets are supposed to win. If they're competing for the division, this is THEIR HOME GAME. I understand that recently we've done better there and vice versa but HF does matter and if the Jets win this week, they've simply held serve. Not won the home and home, not won the division and certainly not won the Super Bowl.

Pats are a 4pt favorite on the road. If the Jets win it would be an upset.

It is Tom Brady vs a 22yr old rookie.

I am a Jets fan, and I would lay the points

It's still a game the Jets are supposed to win if they think they are viable contenders to win the division. Point spread be damned.

re: Kerry Rhodes: "We want to embarass the Patriots"(Merged)

What Rhodes need to think about is the Pats would want to send a message to NY too after all this bullsh!t talk. The messege of pipe down and learn your place, NE is the best team in the East this season.

Theres a method behind Ryan's madness and thats take the pressure off the team and direct it onto himself, but when the players start yapping they set themselves up and (safties in particular) tend to get burned against the Patriots.

Sundays's going to be funky.

Agreed. The Jets pounding their chests displaying their apparent confidence, in a way, truly undermines their confidence.

Wow that is some major smack talking. Has anyone asked the question as to what happens to the Jets and their ego's along with confidence if they lose this game?

Seems to me they are putting their entire season on this game as this is suppose to be their spring board onto bigger things like a division title.

It's going to be important for the Patriots to score first and score early to deflate them and take away a lot of that energy. Also that puts the pressure on the rookie QB to force things trying to make a big play. This is going to be pretty interesting but the Patriots MUST match their intensity early.

hi-larious. this + ryan's phone message + last week's gatorade bath = pure comic gold.

Couldn't agree more! It's like they are bringing all their ammo to a week 2 game. Unreal.

What's the upside for the Jets? If they win, they did something they claim they were supposed to do. If they lose, they look like *******s. Honestly, they should've kept their mouths shut.

Well this is so typical every year we hear this kind of talk and almost every year they go down in flames....They just rationalize it.

re: Kerry Rhodes: "We want to embarass the Patriots"(Merged)

This is just a backlash against the Mangini rules. No-one can talk, now everyone can talk...it is going overboard a bit.

I have been a Jets fan for 25years. The Jets have an inferiority complex. Overshadowed by the Pats in the division, the Giants in the town and stadium. This is just Rex's way of dealing with it. I don't think it will have anything to do with the Jets attitude if/when they lose on Sunday. I don't like it (why give the Pats any more motivation than they already have) but it does make for an entertaining week...

re: Kerry Rhodes: "We want to embarass the Patriots"(Merged)

well, I've been saying it for a while, but the better team usually wins, no matter what is said leading up to the game. So if they Jets are better they will win, if the Pats are better no matter what is said they will win, that's what I learned from last season.

re: Kerry Rhodes: "We want to embarass the Patriots"(Merged)

The more I hear from the Jets, the more I think if they lose this game and lose by a decided fashion that the wheels are going to come off their bus. They are so overconfident and putting so much into this game that if they are the ones who are embarrassed that it could be devestating.

I still don't get the strategy of putting so much emphasis on this game being week 2. All you are doing is putting a lot of pressure on yourself and setting yourself up for a fall if you lose. The Jets have done this before with the Pats and failed.

It is one thing to instill confidence in your team, it is another to instill overconfidence. Guys like Belichick, Parcells, Cowher, Dungy, etc. instill confidence in their players, but they make sure it is a controlled confidence and that no game is significantly more important than the next. These guys have rings. Rarely if ever do the guys who allow overconfidence in the team get the rings (see Dallas).

I think the Jets win easily. Hurts me to say it but the Pats looked awful against the Bills...yes they pulled out a 'gutsy' win, but come one, playing this bad at home against a weak team? Pathetic.

The Jets are pumped...I don't see any way the Pats control the Jets' offense.

I think it's 28-17 time. sorry.

Right, the Patriots were awful getting out gained 441-276. Terrible.

Oh, wait, the Patriots were the ones with 441. They didn't look terrible, they had some missteps in the redzone and short yardage + the INT return.

Last year the Pats looked awful against the lowly Chiefs AND had lost Brady FOR THE YEAR. We then witnessed all of these inane predictions from the trolling Jest fan base extolling the exact same reasoning that we're seeing now.

I'm sure you'll be back on Sunday to face the music when and if the green team goes bad. Oh wait, I'm sure you won't...

re: Kerry Rhodes: "We want to embarass the Patriots"(Merged)

This is still supposedly a copy cat league, but HC's are increasingly slow on the uptake. I rack it up to inflated egos and growing insecurity.

Cowher didn't win it all in in Pittsburgh until he took a page out of BB's book and exerted control over his team (well, at least most of it...and what he couldn't control he jettisoned) and admonished them to STFU and take what the defense is giving you, be humble and play smart football for 60 minutes, period. Got them a ring from the 6 hole.

Ditto Dungy in Indy as he reeled in the ride Manning mania and forced them to learn to play as a team that can win ugly. Despite what the mediots chose to reward, it was his running backs and much maligned defense (with an assist from Rex) coming together as a team Manning merely QB'd that got them to and that finally won them a SB.

There ain't a HC ring on the Ryan tree. Just a lot of larger than life personalities who bounce around. But that fits the profile in NJ... Woody would like to win but all he really wants is to put fannies in seats and win his daily coverage superbowl vs. the Giants, Yankees, Mets, etc. for the backpage of the NY tabloid media. And in the end that is why BB resigned on that ****tail napkin, he can build and run and coach a championship contender for you but he can't play the soundbite ratings whore.

re: Kerry Rhodes: "We want to embarass the Patriots"(Merged)

I'm getting flashbacks from when Anthony Smith, then of the Steelers, made that "guarantee". Hmmm, could we see Moss beating Rhodes on a deep play sunday afternoon? That would be nice...

re: Kerry Rhodes: "We want to embarass the Patriots"(Merged)

i dont care about the talk .except that its the 2nd game of the season. Whatever happened to playing 16 games and getting better ? jets face titans and the saints next. so if they beat the pats and lose the next 2 then are they still happy they won the 'superbowl' ?.
its somewhat similar to the 2002 pats season when BB put all the eggs in one basked for the 1st quarter of the season . the pats just regressesed afterthat and he even admitted it.
Jets have a decent team, they should take this as an opportunity to make bigger goals than just treating one game like a superbowl . if you lose , you dont play the next 14 ?

That's it in a nutshell. It remains that way because you people are just too easily "entertained". As long as Woody can maintain your interest by entertaining you with his HC and QB selections, he doesn't have to actually, you know, win it all...

Three weeks ago you had all given up on any real shot at this season. One game and a PR stunt phone call has entertained you to the point you're now thinking you can...
