Tonight I was watching the first episode of a five-part documentary on Showtime, Full Color Football: The History of the American Football League, and I was pleasantly surprised to see our very own Bill Belichick talking about his memories of the league. They even showed a couple pictures of him as a boy, as he talked about how he would watch AFL games on Sunday afternoons (partly because he loved football, and partly because it was an excuse not to do his homework ;) .)

I wasn't expecting them to feature anyone who wasn't involved with the AFL. By the time Bill started coaching the leagues had merged and the AFL was no more. But he wasn't the only one, there were other writers, historians, etc. who didn't play or coach in the league either. Heck, they even talked to Larry King.

On a side note, there was a fair amount of footage of the Boston Patriots in their first year, which I could tell because they had the helmets with the tri-corner hats.

Can somebody please tell me why these have yet to be given the 'throwback' treatment?:mad:

Probably because nobody remembers the tri-corner, and therefore there's no nostalgia. The red uniforms and Pat Patriot were worn from 1961 to 1992, so fans do have memories of those uniforms, plus they're very different from the ones currently being used.

Some other teams have worn uniforms nobody remembers, such as the Jets when they were the Titans, or the ugly old Eagles uniform we saw a year or two ago, but I don't think those teams have any other choices for throwbacks. While they may have made some changes over the years the differences in those uniforms are so subtle you'd hardly call them different.

I'd just get a kick out of seeing something that old-timey and plain weird :)

I think part of it is also that most people don't know what the heck it is. When I show people my mini-helmets in that style, 9 times out of 10 they say, "Is that a boat?"
