obviously with mayo out for 6-8 weeks someone has to step into the MLB spot. guyton was the guy in the 1st game, so i assume that's the way it will stay.

what were people's thoughts on him? IMO, he was pretty raw and got out of position a couple times. he had a nice play on the QB though where he basically threw down the LG and charged at the QB. he's someone that will need to improve though while mayo nurses his MCL.

Guyton didn't look that good. But, then again, Guyton also wasn't expecting to play most of the game at MLB. He didn't take all the first-team reps all week. Mayo's athleticism allows him to chase down a lot of plays mid-field; I'm sure Belichick has a different game plan when Mayo's out there, just as in the old days they would have a different game plan when a young frenetic Tedy Bruschi was out there.

They'd already gone into the game with what appears to be the clear game plan of "double team T.O., try to double-team Lee Evans, and make Trent Edwards and the running game beat you". With the offense the Pats have, that seemed like a wise plan; score a lot of points, and make Buffalo play time-consuming small-ball. Unfortunately, the game didn't unfold the way they'd hoped; they had a couple of drives killed by 4th-down failures, and then the batted-ball INT for a TD that changed the game. (Not to mention the B.S. roughing call on Wilfork that caused about a 50-yard difference in field position.)

Once Mayo went down, they had to get even more conservative, I'd imagine. Trying to keep the WRs in check, and not having Mayo in the middle, allowed the Bills to move the ball somewhat. But the stats of the game show that the Bills didn't do as great as we thought they did. And, consider, the D-line underperformed and didn't get to Edwards until late in the game (how the Bills' O-line held them off is a mystery) and yet the DBs still did their jobs for the most part.

In short, I think the D is getting a bit unfairly ripped for this first game. (Except for the D-line, which deserves more blame for not making mincemeat out of that Bills' O-line.) The Jets don't have the WRs that Buffalo has, so the DBs will be freer to contribute more towards the line of scrimmage, so I think that Guyton and the D will do a decent job of defending the middle. The question is the D-line. The Jets have a good O-line; if the D-line can get to Sanchez they can rattle him, but if the D-line plays the way they did against Buffalo then Sanchez will have all day long to sit back there and knit a sweater while looking for open targets.

i agree that guyton did not look great but he will get better will lets hope so

but i think this team is just to villana on D with the play calling and has been for the last 2 years or so to be a BB... D

they just play 2 deep with the DB and and try to win men to men up front

and that works when you have mike vrabel teddy b harrison williy mac ty law samuel seymour

but when you dont have the same talent

you have to be more creative on D

If our DL played worth a damn, we'd be doing a lot better making up for Mayo's absence.

I didn't know our DL played badly. We should have had 6 sacks. Instead we had 4 with 7 QB hits. If anything, they were the strength of the team. Fred Jackson killed us in the passing game--not rushing, where he averated 3.8 a carry.

There's no need to hit the panic button on our DL. It's our LBs that are questionable.

Im really hoping AD is not moving inside. I like him outside where he disrupts the QB alot.

I think when he makes a play, that he should act like he's been there and finish the play instead of jumping up and flexing his muscles while the ball is on the ground......

Guyton may not have looked great, but he also wasn't terrible (not in the least), especially when one considers that his primary role in the 4-3 is OLB. He was thrust into the MLB position when Mayo went down. You really can't blame him for not always making the right reads. He'll grow into it if he's asked to assume the role full-time. Let's not panic so soon with him. He's really athletic and just needs some time to come into his own.

Guyton is a good, young player- not a great one but a good one. He'll make some mistakes along the way but will continue to improve and do well.

Need to look at this situation as an opportunity. If Guyton can learn the D more and gain experience while Mayo is out it will make the team stronger in the long run.

Mayo's injury makes the playing time Guyton got last year seem important given the role he's taking on now.

For the most part, we struggled with our LB coverage on third downs. Especially the middle. That seemed to be the weak point and the Bills exploited that in critical downs. That may have been a function of the defense we played (two deep) and conceded those areas to prevent the big plays, but it kept drives going.

With the Jets, if we give Leon Washington that type of running space, he could eat us up. I don't know if Chung is up for it, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to play big nickel and have Chung cover that area to add some speed in the middle. He may be physical enough to take on the running game and has the speed needed to cover Washington out of the backfield.

I think that you might see a 4-3 with Thomas as the MLB. Moving Guyton to OLB with a rotation of Woods (yikes), TBC, Burgess. Behind the front four of Warren, Wilfork, Brace/Wright/Pryor, and Green.

I was pleasantly suprized at the pass rush put on by the team of Burgess and TBC during the last Buffalo drive. Both of them were in Edwards face on everyplay. Hopefully the Pats will grab an early lead and then make Dirty Sanchez try to beat them.
