Longtime Bruins announcer Fred Cusick dies - BostonHerald.com

On day after the Patriots won the first game of their 50th season an original member of their family passes.

He was the color commentator for the very first AFL game back on September 9th, 1960 at Nickerson Field for the Boston Patriots and was with them for six years...

Do not remember him as a Pats announcer, but remember him well as a Bruins announcer... kind of like a Curt Gowdy type, sans cowboy hat.

Probably the best announcer I've ever heard.

I second that. Had great passion for the game and broadcasting- and it showed.

You may have heard of his successor...some guy named Santos ;)

I grew up on Fred Cusick's Bruins calls, and it's an embarrassment that Cusick and that fool in Pittsburgh who does those nonsense calls are both considered hockey play-by-play announcers.

So sorry he wasn't Marv Albert or Gene Hart or whoever was your team's longtime play by play caller

Keep up. I'm from Boston. You're looking for a battle - which you'd lose, by the way - but I was listening to and appreciating Fred Cusick when Bobby Orr was playing? You?

Remember Freddy announcing the great Bruin teams of the 60's and early 70's with Espo, Orr and the boys. Their intro music was Toad by Cream, got me totally amped for the games.

Fred had a good run getting to 90.

Man o' man was Cusick a fantastic hockey announcer - he remains the best I've ever heard in 40+ years. He could bring you right out of your seat, but also kept you crystal clear about the when, where and who of the game so smoothly. Thanks, Fred.

I'll never forget watching a game with my late father back in the 80s. It was a poorly played game on both sides, with the puck barely making past the red lines for almost the whole second period. My Dad says to me, "These guys are playing ****ty hockey". Less than a minute later, Fred Cusick says, "They're playing some ****ty hockey out there right now".

Me and my father never forgot that. We laughed about it every time we watched a game together. Fred agreed with my Dad that night. :)

Of course these days they'd probably fine him for it.
