I've heard from several people and one other football board that the Pats signed Brooks as a short term replacement for Mayo. I cannot find it any place online. Is this just a pure rumor or has anybody heard it's a done deal?

Pure rumor at this point. And I just don't see that taking place, if there's a team where Brooks would fit, it would be daBears, and even they don't want him.

Re: Derrick Brooks Rumor

Gil Brandt just talked about it on NFL Sirius radio. Still a rumor. Brandt thinks Brooks goes outside in the Pats system. Guyton and Thomas would take reps inside.

Re: Derrick Brooks Rumor

The only thing I don't get is that he's an OLB in a 4-3, not a MLB. With that said, I'd rather have him than Seau or Bruschi.

Re: Derrick Brooks Rumor

Brooks just signed with ESPN as an anaylst.

With Guyton moving inside, we could use a 4-3 OLB, too...Mayo's injury is hurting us in two spots.

You know ESPN would ask for the "tapes" in a trade for Brooks.

Willie Mac is starting to look really good right now - I think it COULD happen

The LB situation was questionable BEFORE the Mayo loss... Guyton calling the plays ? We really cool with that ? I dunno. Good thing we plan on scoring.

Moss and Brady better BOTH stay healthy this year.

Re: He just signed

I think the Pats need to look into a trade very quickly.

Not likely.

BB likes to trade from a position of strength, any team with a useful backup MLB would be looking to bend BB over a barrel, so a trade is very unlikely.

These threads all seem very similar, almost like I've read them all, maybe about a year ago? With a different name instead of Mayo?

The current LB group: Thomas, Guyton, TBC, Burgess, Woods aren't an awful group for a few weeks, though they do limit the team's flexibility as far as running a 4-3 versus 3-4. It does make the 3-4 much less effective, with Thomas likely forced to move inside.

Signing Brooks further nudges the defense in the direction of a 4-3 base defense, at least for the 4-8 weeks (my own guess) that Bayo will be out. A starting group of Brooks - Thomas - Guyton with TBC, Burgess and Woods rotating could be pretty effective against some of the weaker offenses that the Patriots face early this season.

Someone decided to update his wiki page.

Michael, what's the update? I didn't see anything out of the ordinary but I didn't see the page before so I can't tell.

Also, this is the most awkwardly titled thread in weeks. From reading the title one of three things is possible:

1-Brooks signed with the Patriots.
2-Brooks has signed with ESPN.
3-Brooks has not signed.

Derrick Dewan Brooks (born April 18, 1973 in Pensacola, Florida) is an American football linebacker for the New England Patriots. He was released following the 2008 NFL season by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team with which he had spent his entire 14-year NFL career. He was drafted by the Buccaneers 28th overall in the 1995 NFL Draft after playing college football for Florida State University.

Just saw his interview on ESPN. Says he definitely wants to play this year and basically confirmed the Pats and Bears interest. Says decision could come Monday. I think if Brooks comes here, he'll be a coverage LB playing mostly on 3rd downs, and would be pretty good at it.
