Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio said Tuesday that the Pats have full confidence in rookie Brian Hoyer if Brady gets hurt. Hoyer is the only other quarterback on the Patriots active roster.

“Brian has been here since the rookie mini camp and he’s proven that he has the understanding and the grasp of what we are doing offensively, so where we are right now, that’s where we are with the club,” Caserio said. “We have the two quarterbacks and we have Isaiah (Stanback), who last week it was kind of his first introduction at some of the things we are doing offensively, so we’ll continue moving forward with that group. If the situation arises where we feel like we have to make a move, then we’ll go ahead and do that.”

Stanback, who was drafted in the fourth round (103rd overall) in 2007 by Dallas, was converted to a wide receiver and kick returner by the Cowboys.

“Isaiah is a player that when he was coming out of college a few years ago out of Washington, we felt that he could actually play the position,” Caserio said last week. “Now, since he’s been with the Cowboys he’s played receiver, he’s done a number of other different things, but we liked the things that he did coming out of college, so our thought process is to work with him at the quarterback position and see how that progresses.”

There was a lot of hype surrounding Joey Galloway when the Patriots signed the four-time Pro Bowl receiver, but Galloway failed to catch a pass in the Pats’ season opener, in a game where Brady threw for 378 yards.

Caserio says not to worry, and that Galloway will be utilized more depending on the defensive matchups in upcoming games.

“Joey is obviously an experienced player,” Caserio said. “He’s been in the league for quite some time. He’s played in a number of systems, so I’m sure there aren’t too many things that he hasn’t seen. I think Joey’s a smart player. He works hard. I think he’s done everything that we’ve asked him to do up until this point in terms of learning the offense. He’s a skill player. He’s been productive in this league. We’re expecting that he has a role in this offense.”

I was hoping they'd sign Garcia as insurance but Philly beat us to it. Hopefully Brian Hoyer is ready if, God forbid, Brady goes down.

Re: Caserio in ProJo: No pressure to sign veteran backup QB & Galloway still in the

Although Garcia is a reliable veteran with plenty of experience, I don't believe his style would have been a good match for this offense.

You're probably right. I just want reassurance, d%#*!@t! :(

Never been a fan of Garcia.. with that being said, hope Hoyer can warm the bench and hold the clipboard for the next 17-18 games...

Re: Caserio in ProJo: No pressure to sign veteran backup QB & Galloway still in the

Even though Galloway seemed invisible on Monday, he played a big role in the offense. Unlike last season with Gaffney on the one side, Moss was open all night and TB was able to throw to him at will. The DBs weren't able to roll over on Moss as much with two deep threat receivers on the field at the same time.

It's a tradeoff: I liked having a solid, good route-running possession guy like Gaffney as a #3, but seeing the ease with which Moss was getting open showed me that having Galloway on the field presents much more of a problem for opposing secondaries. To a certain extent the same was true in 2007 with Stallworth in there as more of a deep threat.

Brady and Galloway will get more in sync as time goes on, and if Moss continues to run free in the secondary defenses will be forced to concede long routes to Galloway with one on one coverage.

Galloway is the 4th option (watson, faulk etc are ahead of him) in this offense. He'll get 30-35 catches eventually.

Galloway becomes an primary option when and only when Brady gets comfortable with him, and 2/ when defenses are forced to consistently leave him in one-on-one coverage. When this happens, we'll see if he's up to the task.

Re: Caserio in ProJo: No pressure to sign veteran backup QB & Galloway still in the

Considering we kept Hoyer and still only have 2 QBs, I think that kind of tells us why we cut O'Connell: Hoyer is simply better than O'Connell and we only want 2 QBs so we have more flexibility with the roster. After O'Connell was let go, the contest for backup was between him and Walter, and Hoyer still won out. not bad for an undrafted UDFA.

Wait, so they cut O'Connell because Hoyer is better? Do tell...

I see what you are saying. I'm catagorizing him in terms of 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. looks by TB. He may become the #3 option (behind Moss and Welk). That make come in time. I hope it does!

Come on, cut me some slack. There was plenty of speculation around here that it was an attitude or behavior problem and not a skill or knowledge problem.

This is entirely correct, and entirely within the concept of using a player's skills to best benefit the team.

This has nothing to do with #12 being 'comfortable" with Galloway, and everything to do with Galloway's speed. He is VERY fast, and opponents have to leave a lot of underneath areas open in order to cover both Galloway and Moss. If the emphasis is the underneath routes, then you'll see a lot of Galloway and Moss on opposite sides running posts and burners.

When the defense makes a moce to cover the underneath stiff, then Galloway or Moss will be able to get open and will see the ball coming their way.

Galloway is very much a part of the game plan, and just because he isn't being thrown to much, shouldn't be seen as a negative.

respects,

But that's the thing: we're still just guessing. For all we know, it could have been an attitude issue, too.

Moss, Welker, Watson, Faulk and Galloway make 5 options.

Absolutely agree with this. I thought they gameplanned for the flat in anticipation that the Bills safety would play over the top as they do in their cover 2, if I am not wrong.

Re: Caserio in ProJo: No pressure to sign veteran backup QB & Galloway still in the

No pressure either to sign an inside linebacker even though the Patriots

started the season short-handed at this position. Three defensive linemen

on the practice squad but no linebackers.

I have watched Brian Hoyer play QB, and I see a guy who has "it". "It" is hard to explain but like the Supreme Court Justice said in another context, "I know it when I see it."

He has POISE and plays the game within the context of the play, and game plan, Astounding for a pure rookie. He seems to throw the ball to the open guy and doesn't force it to the double covered guy. He is still raw and his arm is only good NFL quality and not a cannon. But at 6' 2" and 220 pounds his physique definitely qualifies and is OK. Brady as a rookie, was a spindly 6' 4" guy whose arm was worse than Hoyer's current arm.

Brian needs an off season like Brady did under Woicik; If his arm gets slightly stronger, he vaults into the position of a future NFL star like, softer-armed guys Brady, Sanchez, Brees, Warner & Montana.

He still will not look like the cannon armed guys like Peyton, Carson, Rivers, Ryan, and Cassel etc. But then they have only one Lombardi amongst them.

This makes no sense whatsoever.

This team should always - always - have a LB on the PS, pref. 2 - an ILB & an OLB.

Without Mayo, we already have the worst group of ILBs in the league; and our OLB/DEs are nothing about which to write home, either.

As for the reluctance of the FO to sign a 3rd QB: at this point, why bother? There is nobody available, exc. for Damon Huard, who has any idea how to run this offense. He & maybe Brian Griese are the only QBs whom I would even consider. I would rather see the FO sign an ILB instead of a 3rd QB.

P.S.: Never, ever, believe what a jock, coach or exec says for public consumption. For all we know, Galloway is one more unproductive game away from being released.
