Gostkowski's Fumble Recovery

I'm a bit surprised that no one's started a thread on this yet. To me, Gost's recovery of the fumble exemplifies what BB's teams are about - he likes football players who can contribute in more than one way and aren't just specialists.

I don't know how many other Kickers in this league would have risked injury by getting right in the middle of that pile of guys much larger than him to try and grab a loose football.

Bills-Pats analysis: A furious final five

On the ensuing kickoff, Buffalo trotted out their hands team, anticipating an on-side or squib kick from the Pats. Instead, kicker Stephen Gostkowski drilled one into the Bills end zone. Buffalo’s Leodis McKelvin decided to take it out. Bad decision. He was drilled by Brandon Meriweather, who jarred the ball a bit, followed by Pierre Woods, whose extra effort knocked the ball from McKelvin’s grasp. A pileup formed, but Gostkowski, at the back of it, wound up with the football.

“Stephen Gostkowski … what more can you say about that guy, man?” Woods mused later. “He came down there, he was all bent up, like a pretzel, had the ball, wouldn’t let the guy from Buffalo get it. I tried to pull that [Bills] guy off of him. It was chaos, man.”

Indeed, i love the guy. Kickers and punters tend to not get much burn and the only time you notice them is when they are crap, so it's good to acknowledege them for their skill.

The best part about it was there were several Bills players standing around next to the pile, waving their arms like idiots. Meanwhile, Gostkowski came up behind them, and was the very last person to dive into the pile. And he came up with the ball.

The funny thing is how he ran up to the pile with his arm in the air thinking Eric Alexander had recovered the fumble then saw the ball slip out and kicked it into another gear to get it.

That said, remember that at the last minute the Patriots did try to resign Vinatieri (and pay him about what the Colts were/are [over]paying).

Yup, but they drafted Meat/Beaver/Ghost relatively high for a kicker; not Nugent high, or Janikowski high, but high, for a reason. They may have kept two Ks for a while, because it does seem that #3 could've had a role even if AV stayed. Remember, he was competing w/ Gramatica for the K job in camp.
